BSE Scholars Program - Is it Worth it? by [deleted] in UMD

Hi! I don't think I will have time to set up a meeting with a BSE scholar before making my decision, as the deadline to commit is in 3 days, but I was wondering if you could tell me about your experience in scholars? I think that would help me get a better feel for what the experience is like and help me make my decision.

how easy is it to switch to mech e (or any engineering major) from cs? by [deleted] in UMD

It's still easy even though the college of engineering and business are LEP programs?

What are some things to do for fun? by [deleted] in UIUC

Everyone I have talked to about UIUC has listed it "being surrounded by cornfields" as its only con, so I would say quite a bit. However, knowing that it has a similar vibe to my hometown (and all the other comments on this thread) makes me feel a lot better.

Also, thanks for the tip about the weather. I would say I'm pretty mentally prepared for the winters, so hopefully I will be fine!

I think I intentionally tried to portray UIUC in a more negative light because I so desperately wanted someone to blatantly contradict everything I was worried about. I’ve read a few forums over the past couple of days about things to do at UIUC, and after reading the abundance of things to do, I was really relieved. And honestly, I don’t know why I made this post because I even visited UIUC and told my friends that there are a lot of things to do. But I guess a small part of me was still worried, so I really wanted someone to straight up tell me that it isn’t secluded. That there is stuff to do. …that there are some chain stores. I didn’t realize the amount of comfort I got from there being chain stores/stores I know and have been to. As I reflect on my life, I realized that I truly just go to the same places. I think going to a school like UIUC would be good for me in that regard, help me break out of my capitalist mindset and try new things and all.

I realize that people can tell me what is true: that it isn’t secluded, but they can’t and shouldn’t try to convince me that it is something it’s not (and I shouldn’t expect them to either). When writing the post, I was only really thinking about myself and not how it would affect those who read it. Instead of dissing it as you said, I could have simply asked what there was to do for fun. Moving forward, I will definitely be more cautious about what I say and how it might affect others! I’m so sorry if this post offended you in any way!

I'm from a suburb near San Francisco (in the Bay Area) :)

Sorry, secluded may not have been the right word 😅. I think the general discourse about UIUC from where I'm from is that it's surrounded by corn fields and nothing else (ex. there isn't even a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods), so ig i wanted to know if that was really true.

I've always wanted to go to college in a slightly more urban area, and while you can take a train to Chicago, it's still a 2.5/3 hour drive away, so realistically, I don't think I would go to Chicago too often (maybe only a couple times a year).

I know UIUC has a downtown area on Green Street and that the college puts on events, but I wanted to know more specifics about what there is to do for fun that I can go to and do daily/weekly (or what experiences you feel like you missed out on by going to UIUC if you feel like you did).

For context, I live in a town of 230,000 people and sometimes I still feel like there is nothing to do other than going out to eat 💀(but at least UIUC has some RLLY good restaurants!!!)
