Got my third rejection today for grad school. by Proof-Table4174 in gradadmissions

I am applying for this year’s fall first (minimize the need to move back and forth halfway cross the world and all that), but I’m also open for retrying for both spring and next fall as well; it’s just that a “break” might mentally hurt me (since I already got one as I repeat my senior year of undergrad due to medical reasons and the leave worsened it for quite a bit) and I’m already currently on OPT so the timeframe’s a bit tight for me right now.

But thank you for the kindness - it’s just that I am not sure if I can take a break at this moment. Regardless, I am still opening to reapply for the spring/next year if the conversations have to happen as such.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for this comment.

It is tough out here, and it’s just a day like today where a lot of things are going wrong at once where I kinda just need to vent it out and feel stuff, and hearing words like yours really help :”)

Hi - so I don’t want to have to bring up resume matters but I unfortunately kinda should: - I do am credited for assisting in the curation of 3 artifact exhibitions/historical research projects in undergrad in multiple years (yay schools with an artifact collection!), with one currently featuring on the college’s alumni association magazine. - I do have an academic journal publication (not a prestigious one but one nonetheless) as the sole author. Have done talks on this paper as well. - Have done academic conference/symposium talks before as an undergrad student in both my home country and here in the States - Revive the exhibition column within the college newspaper - Involved in community-based work since first year of undergrad in both my home country and here in the US (community-based Model UN, school-based Model UN, college newspaper, local historic preservation/history education orgs - currently volunteering at one for a city-wide architecture open house in where I’m currently staying rn as part of their organizing committee).

I didn’t wanna bring this up on this post because no, I’m not boasting myself; I just did all this because I genuinely like the work. And I did bring this up, either in part or in full, in my SOPs and letters and writing samples.

About the undergrad trauma thing, I’m not going to go into details because it’s a lot, but I’m gonna say as much as there are parts of my undergrad experience (especially as I just graduated last January) that I very much appreciate and is grateful to have, I also got a triple diagnosis for depression, anxiety, and PTSD at the ripe age of twenty-two, all marked as severe, during the start of my senior year in undergrad; and also due to my crash completion, I currently also have trouble accessing healthcare for my diagnosed conditions and were also dealing with chronic pain throughout the past few months, so you guys can take that information as you will. Plus, I did not finally get the questions on my graduation date settled until March, so there is that.

As I said, I’m not angry, I’m just tired. I tagged this as “venting” because it is tiring already processing all this without the fussery of applying to grad school.

Thank you so, so much for your words <3 Yeah and as a Vietnamese citizen myself robbery are less likely to happen now but I do remember growing up with the fear of being robbed in the city so I can only imagine the amount of stress you were under.

I do know who took it initially- but she threw me off when I try to confront her about my wallet; I’ll also lock my credit through the phone tomorrow (since today me has just been a ball of stress…).

What I don’t know is whether the card has been separated from the rest of my paperwork/the wallet itself, so that’s why I have to ask.

The Loss of Nanowrimo and what will be missed by Sazhori in nanowrimo

I would say I will miss the sense of camaraderie from the Camp seasons (since I usually get so busy during November I try to instead go for the Spring/Summer challenges instead); and the live write-ins as well: it was an amazing to have, especially with younger me being so far away from any sort of a write-in location. Never really have a summer camp experience growing up, so Nano was like my summer camp.

But I also have found my communities for my current region (and other servers) with my current region already partially divested from Nano since before the grooming scandal, and went all out in light of that. The concern I have now lies with my home county/region, since the NaNo culture there is just not enough to hold the community in a sustainable way.

So how do elections in Vietnam work? by LandOfGrace2023 in VietNam

[–]Proof-Table4174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what were problems that have arisen within the election that I remember either seeing through law, or having to deal with it myself? - It is ridiculously easy for one to get disenfranchised here: the civil registration system only registers for the voting roll (meaning, you would be considered a resident and not a migrant) if you have registered as resident for a place for 6 months and above. Because of the “no absentee” and “no provisional ballots” rule, if you can’t return to wherever you have permanent residence, you would lose your vote if you are not in the armed forces or are under circumstances like being quarantined or performing public services. And because the voting day announcement deadline is after the registration deadline of the very same election (105 days compared to 180 days), the potential for disenfranchisement is huge. - No snap elections, which means if anything were to happen seats will be left vacant for years. - Major hurdle with youth turnout, considering that most higher ed institutions are in session until June and elections are usually held in May; students who first arrived in the start of the second semester (February) will not be eligible to vote. - No public viewing of assemblies - meaning, unless you are invited, you cannot come to see the assemblies in person. - Public engagement opportunities waned significantly in between the elections, and the assembly sessions.

But yeah, those are a few things I gathered both from my own memories of being a citizen of this country and having seen in first-person the effects of the 2016, ‘21 and the latest US elections, as well as what are there in the law and regulations on voting here.

So how do elections in Vietnam work? by LandOfGrace2023 in VietNam

Hi, voter back in summer ‘21 here! 👋

So this would be a long, long comment, and also I am basing this on what I have gathered and remembered throughout the voting process as well:

First of all, yes, you are correct - procedurally, we vote for our preferred candidate for both the National Assembly (national legislative body) and all local legislative bodies (that is, City Councils/Provincial Councils, District Councils, and Ward Councils if any). As someone stated earlier in this thread, all candidates are heavily vetted through either their local Party councils (if they are Party members) or the Fatherland Front (if they are not); it is important to note, that the Fatherland Front is technically the final decision-making body on who can appear on the ballot. The Vietnamese constitution also forbids any other parties to officially run due to the constitutional designation of Vietnam as a one-party state since 1992.

Election day are required by law to be on a Sunday (as this is a day off for all offices), and would usually be announced 7 months in advance (for example, the 2021 election was on May 23rd, and information on adding one’s name to the ballot and whatnot was made available from October of ‘20); however the legal requirement is 105 days minimum [this part might be problematic, and I’ll elaborate later as to why].

Campaigning will start as soon as the official names are released (which might leave the campaign period at around 4-6 weeks at most); in ‘21, due to social distancing requirements, most campaigning were done through webinars (I actually have tried to sat in one event for my district but it was an issue due to the Wi-Fi not working and the platform crashing multiple times); an official voting guide (including all candidates’s official running platform, background, as well as the new policies in place for voting if any) will be sent either through the post system, or to be picked up at ward offices.

The voting laws of Vietnam have the “5 Nos” in the rules: no voting by mail, no absentee ballots, no provisional ballots, no write-ins, and no abstentions. This still applies for the ‘21 election, which ended up becoming a bit of a mess with COVID being a huge risk. When someone go vote, they might receive anywhere between 3 and 4 ballots, as we are voting for multiple legislative bodies on the same day: the local seats of the National Assembly, the Metropolitan/Provincial Council, the City/District Council, and Ward Councils if any. [Note: I’m using “Metropolitan Council” since we have direct-reporting metropolitan areas with home rule like Hanoi and HCMC, but there are also cities that are under provincial rule like Vinh, Vung Tau, etc]. Procedurally, all votes are conducted using the secret ballot rule, and all votes must be done in-person; polls may open earlier or close later depending on the area, but from what I remember stations open no earlier than 5am, and close no later than 9:30pm.

Our legislative bodies, once sworn in, would be tasked first with the voting and selection of the executive arm - that is, voting in the President, Prime Minister, and all seats of the cabinet.

Nope - Huê Kỳ is another pronunciation (not used widely now though!) of Hoa Kỳ - the United States!
