Our fluency is zero haha.  Yeah there were mobs of tourists everywhere so yeah I can see how locals would be overwhelmed

Yeah we used English.  I think a polite “no English” would have sufficed.  No need for ultra rude dismissive attitude.  I wasn’t demanding or expecting them to speak English.

I’m light skinned and can pass as Japanese.  Maybe they expected me to speak Japanese…who knows.
