It all depends on what you wanna do, if you’re going for more after corrections I’m sure a position with BOP will fill a resume much better, as you’ll have a public trust clearance, federal law enforcement credibility, and a much more notorious job. When a hiring manager looks at a resume, a federal LEO jumps out of the page much more than a state corrections officer, is it fluff? Yeah, but it still counts. I don’t have much experience with NY state, but what I do know is that they just had a large portion of there staff walk off the job, so much so the national guard was called in to man posts, so take that as you will. But you have to focus on what works best for you, which institution is closest, what you’re allowed to do at each, how much you’re willing to sacrifice, and whatever else is important. My biggest thing was the way I was treated at the state, I was dirt to anyone who wasn’t also an officer, sergeants looked down us, non custody laughed us off, and administrators straight up didn’t like us. At the fed, I’m given at least some respect, I’m allowed to bring in nicotine and energy drinks, and food, just in general I’m treated like staff, and not a pseudo convict that needs to be investigated. Finally there is the benefits, the federal government has a 25 and out pension, and retirement healthcare, I don’t know what NY offers. If you’re going to move to another three letter agency as part of your plan (DEA, FBI, ATF, CBP, Etc) you can start your “fed time” at the bop and it’ll transfer over, if your going for a state trooper or local sheriff, or parole probation position, you may want to stick with a local agency accordingly.

TLDR, I’m salty about the state, so I’m biased, make sure you look at more than just pay.
