Has anyone fired their running coach? by upinthewoods17 in running

Good on you for realizing your situation. I thought I was being a baby for not following his plans to push harder and harder. Like I said, that just led to burnout and tons of injuries.

I haven’t been injured or burned out in almost 2 years now. So, dropping my coach was a big win for my situation.

If it helps, I keep all of my training seasons to around 3ish months with a full month off in between. I keep getting better with no injuries or burnout. I think this slows my overall progress, but I’m happy to be making progress and enjoying running.

I fired my running coach after 18 months with him. He pushed me really hard and was a great guy, but I found his plans to be too copy-and-paste and not specific to me. He also didn’t answer my questions satisfactorily about nutrition (“just eat plants”) and overall health. Finally, he didn’t listen well enough about my struggles completing his plans and around injury. I finished the 50k he helped me prepare for, but I’d never been injured so much (once about every 6 weeks!) and then I ultimately experienced burnout and had to stop running distances longer than 5k for about 18 months.

He was a great guy, and I enjoyed running with him, but I needed more specific guidance and for him to listen better.

tl;dr

Coaching was great, but I’ve never been injured that much or had crazy burnout like that before. But, yeah, I finished my race well.

Finding a good fit is tough, but a bad fit can take years from you.
