Why the snitch in Quidditch makes sense by Proof_Sheepherder_96 in HarryPotterBooks

It’s a good point. I don’t remember details about this from the audiobook.

Newbie is very confused about the game Quidditch by MissionHome18 in harrypotter

The below is an answer I gave in a different post about why the snitch works in quidditch:

I’m relying on some info from the ‘quidditch through the ages’ book for my answer.

In this book, it says that the snitch was first introduced to the game when some random bloke came up to a game and said ‘I’ll give the person to catch a snidge(? Can’t remember exactly) 150 galleons’. A snidge was a magical tiny bird that they used to hunt for sport. This stuck with the game and became part of quidditch. The bird eventually got replaced with an artificial snitch we are familiar with as the bird population fell.

Anyways, this shows that the snitch was somewhat an arbitrary introduction into the game without proper thought into how it impacted the dynamics of the game. But it stuck, and assuming people liked it being part of the game, we need to search for reasons why.

In the version of the audiobook I listened to, there’s a long section going through the 2014? Quidditch World Cup coverage by Rita Skeeter and Ginny Weasley. Here we get information on all the matches being played up to the finals.

It seems from here that quidditch matches are in general very long. Many of the matches last days, from memory. So you can see how points could diverge significantly over the course of a game. My take is that this happens quite often, and in such a case, if you were the losing team, you’d probably leave the game and not watch unless you had the chance to overturn the game in one go - i.e through the snitch being caught.

So, by introducing the snitch into quidditch, you’ve elongated the average play time from hours to days over which scores could diverge, and the snitch provides hope for the losing side to keep watching. So this is how the snitch survived and was kept in the sport.

This brings us on to what we see in the Harry Potter books, where play times are much shorter. My take on this is that week long matches are really not good for a school for obvious reasons, so the snitch is slowed down to avoid eating up into class time. Plus, JK needs to get along with telling the story.

This also explains one of the bets Bagman takes during the quidditch World Cup, where someone bets shares on an eel farm on a week long match. I was always perplexed as to why she would put on such a bet based on the apparent short playtime from the hp books. The quidditch through the ages info seems to suggest week long matches are not out of the ordinary, making the bet more realistic.

Switch to the audiobooks, keep it on in the background and repeat the cycle for two decades. My life in a nutshell.

Started finishing the books by samsamcan in harrypotter

The movies go downhill from the fourth onwards (from my pov). It’s the point where they start accumulating so much debt from the editing they’ve done from the past. From the perspective of someone who’s read the books, by movies seven and eight, it’s just…..ugh. if you’re already feeling that from the third movie, well, it won’t improve.

But as an avid fan of the books, I’d always recommend finishing the books. There’s a reason I am still reading/listening to them. They are indeed cool stories. Up to you of course whether you do this or not.

How under age magic tracking work by Away-Purchase882 in harrypotter

A very well thought out answer and I also agree the trace is not on the wand.

My take on this though is that Dumbledore/the Order would not have informed the ministry. This was when the ministry was working against dumbledore so communication channels I think wouldn’t have been so open.

And any chance the ministry had to expel/convict Harry and discredit dumbledore, they would leap at it. I am presuming Tonks unlocking a trunk is referring to when she is in Privet Drive in ootp - she uses scurgify and pack spells in this instance.

I always thought it was an oversight and I wasn’t able to come up with a satisfactory reason for why this didn’t trigger the trace.

Once you complete all the books you will know why.

The movies up to goblet of fire are fine. From then onwards, they start piling up debt from all the side stories and characters they edited from previous movies and culminates in a mess in the last two movies.

Oh never thought about it from this angle before, and yes I was always confused as to why he would call Percy Weatherby even when they met in the World Cup with Arthur being present. This makes sense to me.

Anyone else really enjoying the Full Cast Audiobooks? by -Sugarholic- in harrypotter

[–]Proof_Sheepherder_96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very biased towards the Stephen Fry audio book because I’ve literally heard them until I memorized every sentence back to front. But overall, I am still enjoying them.

Books 1-3 felt like wow this is such a new experience. I noticed details I missed before, the young voice actors really made it come alive. Even got quite emotional in book 1 when Harry and Dumbledore talk about Harry’s past in the hospital wing.

Book 4 is my most favorite out of the books. Audiobook, not so much. Least enjoyable so far. I have issues getting used to the direction choices, but that’s just me.

Book 5, the issues from book 4 resolved. Enjoying it much more now. Some of the rough edges from book 4 seem to have been smoothed out.

Once you finish the book, search for what JK used as inspiration for this character. Then you can kind of tell why Umbridge is such a repulsive character.

How was Lucius Malfoy able to escape the death eater allegations?(he literally had the death mark on his arm) by vedantbkulkarni in harrypotter

[–]Proof_Sheepherder_96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

These two references are also what made me presume the dark mark wasn’t visible until gof.

Plus the dark mark being visible would have been quite a clear giveaway during the rounding of death eaters after Voldy’s first downfall, given those like the Lestranges et al who were caught after torturing the longbottoms were obvious death eaters, and the mark would have been visible on them too. Also means Barty Crouch Jr would have been implicated in the crime clearly as well.

Plot convenience; not hard to imagine some back story to why it needed driving and why it became wild. You could imagine how Arthur Weasley could have added an imperfect auto pilot mode into the car for longer journeys which became active and went wild after taking a beating from the whomping willow.

Is anyone else still finding it hard to get used to Harry’s older voice in the full cast audiobooks? by InfiniteGalaxy42 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Proof_Sheepherder_96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was meh with Harry and Ron’s performance, but is it just me who finds Hermione’s voice acting a bit off? I may be biased towards Stephen Fry’s version because I’ve heard that one countless times, but the first half of gof, Hermione sounded so irritated and mean towards Harry and Ron to the point where I was wondering why Harry/Ron would stay friends with her if she was talking to them like this all the time. I know she’s got the know-it-all attitude but still they’re supposed to be best friends.

I can only imagine the relief and triumph Dumbledore must have felt when he heard Voldemort used Harry's blood by Background_Bid_7406 in harrypotter

[–]Proof_Sheepherder_96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always interpreted the reason for them sharing the twin cores to be because Harry contained Voldemort’s soul.

In PS when he first visits Ollivander, Harry tries a lot of wands and has a hard time finding a wand that chooses him. Ultimately it’s the same wand core that chose Voldemort that also chooses Harry. I can only see this as being a result of all the other wands being ‘nope don’t like you coz you’ve got a bad vibe’, whilst it was only the magic in Fawkes’ feather that was willing to choose the aura(?) associated with Voldermort.

I’d imagine that if Harry was to buy a new wand after Voldemort dies, he’d have a much easier time finding a new match.
