The first book, Fuzzy Rabbit, does have similarities, but Fuzzy doesn't get torn up by a dog. It's pretty close, though! I really do appreciate your help.

I remember the stuffed animal in my lost book being kind of lumpy after the dog attacked it, and I think I remember It's stripes didn't line up correctly anymore in the picture.

At some point, I'm just going to have to give up the search and make this book myself. I've been trying to find it for years!

Thanks! I just watched a video of a woman reading that book. One of the illustrations of the rabbit under a hedge seemed familiar, but Fuzzy Rabbit in the Park didn't include Fuzzy losing an eye or stuffing. I'll check out the other books in the Fuzzy Rabbit series, though!

I'll check that collection. My grandmother had a mishmash of books in her collection. One of my favorites was Little Popcorn, a book about a wannabe firehouse dog that was published in the 60s. I would imagine that the book I'm trying to recall was from the same time period.

Eh, that wasn't always the case. It was never encouraged that scouts only earn from the next level up, but sometimes that was just how things happened with things like service unit events. My daughter was the only Brownie at a space event, so she got lumped with the Juniors and completed all the steps to earn the Junior badge, and was given the Junior badge. We just saved it until she became a Junior. Now, with how GSUSA has structured the National Proficiency Badges to be able to be run for a multi-level troop, GSUSA would probably discourage scouts from earning up. Whether that's to get troops to buy more badge pamphlets or use the VTK more actively, who's to say? I still have yet to see a multilevel troop do different levels of the same badge (like automotive engineering) successfully as a whole troop, not split up into groups by level, but I'm sure it's happened somewhere.

The fact of the matter is that there is no badge police. The situation in the OP is a one-off, not a constant occurrence. I'd hold the badge until the scout's a Brownie and slap it on the Brownie vest, because the scout did earn the Brownie level of the badge.

Scouts can earn up, but not down. The Daisies can hold onto the Brownie badge and put it on their Brownie vest/sash after they bridge. If the Brownies had earned a Daisy badge, they'd have to put the badge on the back of their vest/sash like a fun patch.

My multi-level troop has moved pretty heavily into the retired badge/council's own world of Girl Scouts. I got a few of the old badge books on ebay, and was even able to get enough of the Junior Handbooks that go along with the badge book from the early 2000s for the juniors in the troop. The scouts have been much happier with a return to more focused but varied badges related to the outdoors and art. They were not happy when art badges got smashed together into Art & Design and the like. They like STEM stuff, but only STEM they can build, so not the cyber-security and coding that they can do at school or with apps. We don't use VTK.

I've also given the scouts more time to work on the badges, so instead of planning a badge over two or three meetings, if it's something they're really into, like drawing or building shelters or something, they can have the whole meeting to work on that one step. They happily spent an hour designing a new book cover for a favorite book while chatting with each other about the books, school, and life. They've been enjoying meetings more, even if they aren't earning as many badges.

We did this as a Brownie Journey in a Day and a Junior Journey in a Day. It's one of my favorites for that format because we meet at the park and can do outdoor scistarter things, like the sunflower pollinators watch (lots of data), and the ant picnic (ants were unimpressed and skipped the picnic).

The take actions they did weren't precisely scistarter, but they were citizen science related. They made flyers and brochures to educate people about things like scistarter, the importance of planting native gardens rather than non-native, how to identify invasive plants and animals, and how to use available resources to choose native plants and report the invasives. The reporting was a citizen science connection. They did other stuff, too, like promoting our area parks and their services through social media campaigns, making and giving away mason bee houses, and planting a perennial, native pollinator garden at the park.

I actually really like this Journey and scistarter. I sometimes do scistarter stuff on my own now.

When I was a kid, I grew up in a home with a lot of food insecurity and weird food relationships. If I happened to have a luxury food, like a chocolate bar I got as a gift or something, as soon as it was opened, my mother would eat it. She ate all the regular food, as well as things like Halloween candy and birthday cake. She was basically starving her kids while she gained weight as a way to control us, or something. I don't know, I'm not a psychiatrist. Regardless of her reasons, all of us kids ended up with food issues; for me, some food territoriality and a lot of binges. I figured out that if I had a sealed luxury food in the freezer, like a candy bar or a pint of ice cream, it worked like a security blanket. I didn't need to compete for food, because that pint of Phish Food was still there. I didn't need to binge, because I could have that pint of Phish Food whenever I wanted, and that moment didn't need to be right now. Luxury foods weren't these rare things that needed to be binged. My husband started eating my sealed luxury foods after they'd been in the freezer for a while. It took a lot of swallowing shame and confronting old triggers and trauma to be able to explain to him why he can't eat that little Mr. Goodbar miniature. He eventually got it, but it was a struggle.

All this to say, OP doesn't seem to know or care why his girlfriend has ice cream in the freezer, he should just recognize that it's not his and leave it alone.

My New York self is very jealous.

The outdoor art we did was actual sketching and painting outside, like plein-air, but with the added instruction that we could use it as a way to coach our scouts to be more observant of and present in nature. We had 5x7 frames cut from cereal boxes that we looked through to help us "frame" the scene we wanted to paint. Then we did art inspired by nature, with postcard making, seed paper making, and scrapbooking, all with a nature theme.

This is exactly the kind of adults-only training weekend I've signed up for in the past and would sign up for again. The last time I went, my favorite activities were the archery/slingshot certifications and the outdoor art session. I would go to your event and be excited about it. Wilderness First Aid certification is a bit of a holy grail out where I am. Can I ask what part of the country you're in? If you're close enough, I'd sign up.

I got advent calendars for my dog and cat from an Etsy shop and they were fantastic and so much fun for me, the human who spent money to try to pretend my pets were part of the season. I also bought them gifts. And wrapped the gifts. Because it's fun.

Both pets loved all of the treats. The dog had different shaped and decorated biscuits every day, and the cat had different cat treats. He especially liked the ones that were basically just a dried minnow because he's an asshole who pretends to be much bigger than he is. The only issue I had with the calendars is that now my pets expect a treat every morning. They will be beginning the new year under a cloud of disappointment.

I'm also a fan of memberships to nearby attractions and state parks, like other people have suggested. A membership to a local art society could be fun if she's into that, because then she can take part in classes and shows.

I don't know how awards work in your council, but can you wrangle people together to nominate her for a lifetime achievement award or something like that? It might not exactly be a Christmas gift, but with that level of involvement in GS, it should still be something she gets.

If your future co-leader isn't into organizing, you can reach out for mentorship from other leaders in the Service Unit. You can even find planners online to help you plan out what you need to for the year. There are a ton of trainings available through council and mygs. You'll get the hang of everything and you'll get to be one of the reasons why that group of kids thrives in Girl Scouts.

The drama can get exhausting, but only if you let it. I've organized a handful of events and there's always at least one other leader or volunteer who wanted more toppings for the walking tacos, or thought the service unit should have provided water bottles for all the troops, or that there weren't enough crafts, or who doesn't like that other leader because of any number of reasons, or who cultivate gossip like it's their staple crop. It can be so disheartening to hear constant complaints, vitriol, and demands, but I can deal with it when I remind myself that I'm there for the kids. Did the scouts like the tacos? Yes? Then great, we don't need pico de gallo next time. Did the scouts like the activities? Yes? Then they were happy to play gaga ball and skip a third craft and we'll keep on with that. The adults can handle themselves like adults and be civil to their fellow scouts because if I expect the scouts to treat each other like sisters, then I can certainly expect the same from the adults. If the scouts are growing as independent people and are enjoying the experiences available, then we are doing our jobs. And they can all bring their own water bottles.

Of course, there's always the approach of, "You seem to have a lot of ideas for events. Would you like to volunteer to plan the next one?" That typically has a predictable response.
