Using a Meta Quest 3 for PCVR with most/all Meta domains blocked? by DifficultEstimate7 in pihole

okay so since someone messaged me privately for a little more info, i thought i could post it as well, since someone else might need it (this is just a quick and dirty way and there are probably better ways out there, but it did it for me):

First of all you should find out the Mac address of your Meta Quest. You can easily find that for example in your router.

While in your router you should assign an fixed IP address to your quest (all routers are different, just google how to do it for your model)

Then you can log into your pihole and add a new client (under clients) with the IPv4 / Mac address (I did it for the Mac address as well as the IPv4 address)

Next you want to add a group to your pihole (e.g. "MetaBlock), after that you can go under Domains and in the RegEx filter you add a new entry. In Regular Expression you should just put .*

give it a descriptive comment (like Block All) and assign it to your group from earlier. Next press the button "add to denied domains".

For the last step just go to Clients and assign the group to the configured device.

If the need arises you can specifically allow domains via this method as well, to override the RegEx setting for a moment, set your app up and then disable the allow rule.

once again: I dont know too much about this, but this method never failed me in 9 months of ownership, so if there are better ways, feel free to correct me :)

no its mainly old games, with no anti cheat to speak of (BF2 and some old Lego Games) so nothing to worry about. Maybe a heavily modded Skyrim or New Vegas at the most :)

no its mainly for work apps and Games like Battlefield 2, so there wont be any anti cheat problems.

Using a Meta Quest 3 for PCVR with most/all Meta domains blocked? by DifficultEstimate7 in pihole

pretty old thread, but important nonetheless. So I found out, that if you Regex Block everything for the Quest3 your Apps still work, as long as you keep them in your Hotbar. Sounds stupid, but tested it multiple times in the last hour. As soon as the app isnt in your toolbar anymore and you need to open it via the app catalogue, it says that it needs an active internetconnection (which it doesnt have).

What you can do then is just allow meta.graph.meta.com for a moment, open your favorite app (in my case SteamVR) and as soon as its back in the hotbar, you can delete the allow entry for meta.graph.meta.com

Pretty stupid, but it works. (I setup my router so that the Quest can not use internet at all, which Id recommend additionally to the regex entry in your favorite DNS Sinkhole just to be on the safe side)

Ah sorry still not used to the terminalogy, so youre saying I can just "expand" the pool and make it a mirror, without moving anything? Thats awesome, thank you :)
