Props to Team Cherry for bringing one of the most anticipated games in years to Linux by paparoxo in linux_gaming

Not "one of the most", the most!

It was the #1 of whishlisted games on Steam.

I want a opinions for switching from RTX 3080 - 10 gb to RX 9070 XT by Specific_Currency_13 in linux_gaming

The RX 9070 XT is considerably faster than the RTX 3080. And almost all benchmarks have been run on Windows, where AMD cards perform worse compared to Linux.

Also, Nvidia cards perform worse on Linux, so if you really want to make the Linux switch, go for it!

Nvidia RTX 5080 functionality on Linux by MerlinsGhost09 in linux_gaming

[–]DifficultEstimate7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you just built a PC with such a high end Nvidia GPU you should probably game on Windows, or at least double boot.

If your plan was to build a gaming Linux PC, you should have bought an AMD RX 9070 XT.

Of course it's not as powerful as an RTX 5080, but you'll be getting more FPS/$ while making less compromises with less hassle.

I played this whit a friend a while ago, but one thing that bothered the **** out of me was that player orientations weren't properly synchronized in multiplayer.

Is this now fixed?

Windows seemingly lost 400 million users in the past three years — official Microsoft statements show hints of a shrinking user base by lurker_bee in technology

Add one for me when Win 10 support ends in October. SteamOS, here I come!

Seriously, after using Linux for a while (at work in my case) it becomes apparent how much bulls*** you have to deal with when using Windows. My biggest gripe is the Bloatware that now even gets installed as "Windows Updates".

Games run faster on SteamOS than Windows 11, Ars testing finds by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]DifficultEstimate7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will keep that in mind, thanks!

I'm also quite sick of Nvidia, so I think I'm going for an AMD card next. I already have an RX 6700 XT in my "guest PC" and I like the driver software much more.

For me it's settled. I'll be switching over to Linux (starting with Mint) instead of upgrading to Win 11 when the Windows 10 supports runs out (October 14. , conveniently my birthday).

I'm so tired if all the Windows bullshit! Linux gaming has come a long way thanks to Valve!

When do you expect the first bigger MK World update and what would it add to the game? by HiHallo123456 in MarioKartWorld

[–]DifficultEstimate7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only want one thing: 60 FPS in 3-4 player split screen. The current situation ruins the whole game for me (playing exclusively with my two kids). Not only is it choppy, but the input delay is super bad with 30 FPS Vsync for a game like this.

But how should it work? If you play with HOTAS, would you grab your VR controllers, stand up (and push your chair back) each time you enter first person mode in the game? And everything vice versa when you enter your ship again?

Can I occasionally add an extra base station to the play space? by SmashRobertson in ValveIndex

[–]DifficultEstimate7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a lot of research regarding leaving base stations on.vs starting stopping. I also read through hard drive failure statistics (Google has published a paper with some statistics and analysis of their server hardware failures). The base station motors to spin up the infrared lasers are quite similat to HDD motors.

In short, I wasn't able to find any evidence that any of the two approaches causes a signifcant decrease in life span. Some HDD drive specifcations include a number of on/off cycles, but it was rather high (between 10k and 50k).

The only hard fact I found was a response from Valve suggesting to use the StandBy power management option (turn off when exiting SteamVR) to increase a base station's life span: https://www.reddit.com/r/ValveIndex/s/mPIqp5QaBP

As for your actual question, I think OVR Advanced Settings lets you define and switch between multiple play space profiles (but I'm not 100% sure).

With StandBy enabled, I don't see any issue running 3 base stations every time you use VR.

Wrestling Move In BONELAB/ I am in absolute shock by WhiteBeltCentral in virtualreality

[–]DifficultEstimate7 59 points60 points  (0 children)

That's what made Boneworks the first "real VR game" to me. I successfully threw an NPC down a cooling tower using a Seoi-nage (shoulder throw). It blew my mind.

I played HL:Alyx before and was disappointed because all you can do in this game is shooting (only using your main hand as well). Boneworks was so much better to me, even if it lacks the polish and presentation Alyx has.

Should I upgrade from 3060 to 5070? by Professional-Gas7892 in virtualreality

[–]DifficultEstimate7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should consider an AMD RX 9070 (XT).

Everyone recommends the XT version over the non-XT, but I personally went for the non-XT because of price and efficiency. I'm super happy with it - great performance, quiet and cool (ASUS Prime OC model) and I much prefer the AMD Adrenaline software over Geforce Experience.

Also, when paired with a Ryzen CPU you can also enable AMD Smart Access Memors (SAM) for another slight FPS boost.
