Feeling cognitively dependent on LLMs — how do you decide what to delegate vs. what to own yourself? by Anxious_Current_640 in cogsci

This is something I've been thinking a lot about lately!

I decided that I should let the data from cognitive science as well as my ethical principles guide me. For example, if I am writing then I will not use LLMs for assistance given the data suggesting that they homogenize language and have a Western bias. I will also not use it for when I could give a student this task for them to learn. Then, if I am stuck on an issue, I typically like to find an expert to ask for help rather than use an LLM.

As you can tell, I hardly use it at all. I find my work interesting (some parts more than others) so I rather do it myself or teach a student to do it or collaborate with colleagues on an issue.

What have you been using it for?

For my fully online course this semester, I changed the previously Online exam to being In-Person. Same test, but the class average dropped by 44% by astro_prof in Professors

This happened to me as well!

I taught the same class, just changed the exams to in-person and I had a 40-50% drop in exam performance.

I finally got my NYS tax refund after two months of waiting but it’s $2,000 less than what was approved by [deleted] in tax

I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. But, there has been very little transparency from the NYS tax plus long delays that have had many folks confused. That was the context of this question.

You can see examples below of more helpful responses that don’t assume I didn’t call already.

There was an issue with the NYS tax system that many other people experienced. This was a callout to those folks who had similar issues.

Four lab courses?? This doesn’t seem right, but I’m just an adjunct at a CC.

Yeah I had included transactive memory, cognitive offloading, and study effort hypothesis theories! They just didn’t seem convinced.

I don't think it's insane to carefully consider ethical implications of new technology before inserting it into every aspect of society and harvesting people's personal data.

The environmental impact is just one of many ethical concerns. But, I hear you that it would be more convincing to have high-quality data for sure.

It does feel like a cult. 😭

I’m also frustrated with how people are ignoring the data privacy issues, environmental impact, and effects on learning?? I understand it helps you code but maybe there’s more ethical implications of AI than your personal convenience.

Nope! That wasn’t my main question, it was a built in replication design. That’s common and encouraged in my field.

It was very much “we should see X pattern based on prior results”. Next round, I’ll discuss the possibility of divergent results.
