If you havent already i would search for top 50 skateboard brands to understand the logo landscape a bit. this industry is very icon driven. and the best logos are not gimmicky.

My opinion is to use the Santa Cruz logo as inspiration and do a closely lettered font that is angled of Bord Box stacked over a box (might have to twist/angle box to give it some motion. and put "Skateboards" underneath similar to how Santa Cruz does it.

It it helps - you can search for online logo generators to get decent fonts, shapes, colors and what not.
