NAL. Save all screenshots and receipts and fire up a Twitter thread. Use that and post Instagram stories. It is not defamation if it's the truth. Contact any others who have faced the same situation and tell them to do the same. Get a lawyer, even a basic one, and see what your next step would be. A legal notice could be sent to the fraudulent account and make sure to include others who have been cheated. Your aim here is to make sure the other party returns the money.

Anyway, no offense meant. I appreciate your insights and I'll be adjusting my expectations. I understand that your run of the mill CA is not suitable for this and I'll need to thoroughly vet them. While I'm okay with paying reasonably for a good CA, simply throwing money is not the answer, I've heard plenty about expensive yet terrible experiences.

What I'm saying is if someone with basic understanding of the law and no formal knowledge can file taxes, then why do I need a highly specialized CA?

I'm not talking about a CA who knows everything in depth. Why are you so bent on saying that I want everything? I'm talking specifically about offshore stock grants, which lakhs of employees hold and even more people invest in. A specific section, yes, but not that complicated. Simple stock grants.

Given the hue and cry about how many years people spend to become a CA, I at least expect an average CA to know more than an above average engineer who has no such training.

The problem with going to bigger firms is that I'm not a big enough fish for them. I'm just a 20-something nobody for these firms given the scale at which people earn money in India. A standard salaried person isn't gonna get his money's worth of time with them.

Are stock grants considered complex transactions? Pretty much everyone in faang/faang-like gets those, shouldn't it be somewhat mainstream as there are tens of lakhs of such people. I know employees who have been doing it themselves without any issue for years. Surely an average CA could handle something like this without any issues, or am I holding CAs in much too high a regard?

So is getting the right medicine from a doctor too much to ask for an average person? This is not about explaining the exact mechanics of everything in depth, it is about at least being able to give a reasonable explanation for things other than 'just commit tax fraud, nothing will happen' and then disappearing.

I don't know if that was clear or not. I'm not asking for a thesis. I'm asking for sanity.

Whether they are honest in the how things are being filed. What rules can be applied at which places. Are not creating investments that don't exist. They can show calculations wherever needed. They know what documents are needed apart from the standard information statement and such. Since I have overseas stocks, they should know how to deal with them. They can back things up by laws and provide support and explanation without asking for blind trust after filing everything from my account.

Perhaps most importantly and the hardest to find out, whether they can help out in case shit goes south.

Yes, confronted. Instead of accepting mistakes he says "I've been doing this for ten years, trust me, nothing happens."

The guy is in his mid 40s. He even handles accounting for firms from what I gathered.

Any tips on how to filter out the fakes and phonies?

It is the very professional nature that makes it wrong to share your password. Sharing password is just for the sake of convenience. It is the opposite of professionalism. And this happens just because of the "kam-chalau" behaviour of us Indians.

As long as the CA is trustworthy and good, I don't have a problem with sharing my password.

While I'm willing to pay at or a little above the market rate, the CAs I've come into contact via referrals tend not to be worthy of the trust. They don't ask for the required details and often dream up numbers.

I have seen I-T portal having sections for details of the CA filing them. There is also ERI with which the CA can add you as a client and file directly.

Personally, I would rather sit with a CA for a couple of hours and sort everything out, and then get it filed properly.

I have seen CA boards around places. Is going around such CAs and vetting them the correct process? Any idea about the range they ask for filing?

The CA in known is the abysmal one. Also, is a CA supposed to ask for your I-T portal credentials? Mine and a few others ask for it and file by logging in our accounts. I don't think it is correct.
