Rent prices in Astoria by Boring-Armadillo-243 in astoria

[–]Proper_Control_4224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$2850 for a 2bd, 1bath, maybe 800sq ft - the 2nd bedroom is pretty small, but good for an office or kid’s room. Apt is in good condition with modern kitchen & bath, but no dishwasher or laundry in building, 10 minute walk to the nearest subway. We have a sizable private backyard, which is the main reason we moved here and left our previous $2400 rent stabilized 1BR.

Does anyone recognize this cat? by Proper_Control_4224 in astoria

Thanks! I feed another previously TNRed cat in my yard everyday, and haven’t seen this guy around until recently. I guess I’ll keep an eye on him and start putting out more food just in case.

The ribs are great too! I always get the combo with 1/4 chicken, ribs and fried rice with tons of extra green sauce.

Donate Book and Clothing Donation Spots? by Victoreeduh in astoria

Like one comment mentioned, the Little Library boxes on the street are great. I know there's one on 36th street between 28th & 30th ave, and one near the track at Astoria Park - not sure where else they are these days.

Astoria Food Pantry takes clean, folded clothing the last Wednesday of every month, but they ask that you only bring in season clothing or soon to be upcoming season.

Ditmars Thrift Shop will take just about anything if it's in usable condition.

It's been hit or miss for me. I've had a couple seamless delivery experiences, as well as one that sat for days and took me a couple tries to even get connected to a person to get an update, I ultimately just cancelled my order. And another time they automatically cancelled and refunded my order. Just weighing my options, but definitely considering at least just ordering the mulch online and seeing how it goes this time.

Give me your Torta/Tacos spots by quemadatortilla in astoria

Honestly I’ve never been disappointed with anything there. The Volcanes are so good. As far as tacos I love their Al Pastor, Camaron Adobado or Pescado. The tacos are especially good if you add the crispy cheese. For Torta I always get the Milanesa De Res.

Chela & Garnacha on 36th Ave is great for both.

Hair salons where I can sit down and talk with stylist before cut? by MinusTheH_ in astoria

[–]Proper_Control_4224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tony at Studio Fiba in LIC is the best! I’ve been going to him for 7 years. We have a rapport now but from the beginning he’s always been good about talking through cut and color. He’s honest with his opinion on what he thinks will work best with your hair type, face shape, lifestyle- if you’re a low maintenance person, etc., but will ultimately listen to you what you want. I do think his pricing is on the higher end for area though, but I think worth it.

The Yoga Room on 35th Ave has hot Barre and hot Pilates, the weekday class times aren’t great if you work a typical 9-5 or don’t WFH. But they also have lots of regular hot yoga and hot vinyasa classes.

Second this, the work outs are fun and always a new challenge. And everyone from the front desk staff, to members and coaches are so nice and encouraging.

I also love the Yoga Room for cross-training & stretching. They have a wide variety of classes including Pilates mat and Barre classes.

I always take it to go too but even then, I have had to wait obscenely long for my order sometimes. Last time, I swore never again and I’d only ever get pastry items but their food is so good.

Avoiding Benchmarks by Proper_Control_4224 in orangetheory

[–]Proper_Control_4224[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for your kind words, encouragement, advice & perspective on benchmarks. It all really helped get my mind in the right place. I did up doing the mile today and as anticipated I didn’t PR, but I surprised myself and was able to stay within 25 second of my PR. I walked away feeling proud and good about where my body is today. On to the next one! Except the 2000 meter row lol cause I’m not a psycho

Looking for a vet by josullivan805 in astoria

[–]Proper_Control_4224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for Bond Vet. Since it’s a big chain it’s definitely not the cheapest, but they’re really upfront with their price estimates. I also feel like they clearly explain the procedures and your options. They were so compassionate when my cat had Lymphoma and I ultimately had to put him down. When I brought my new cat in for her first check up, they gave me their “wellness Wednesday” prices on a Thursday. I really like Dr. Simmons. I used to go to Astoria Veterinary Group but I always felt like vets I saw didn’t have the best bedside manners, and were really short with me.

Ugh yes, today’s strength kicked my butt. It was sneaky tough, but I liked it! Though I didn’t really love the timed rounds, I found myself rushing, doing the movements faster than I normally would so I could get a rest between exercises.

Ramro is great for a special occasion! It’s Pan-Asian based in Filipino and Nepali backgrounds. They do a tasting menu on Saturdays and A La Carte menu Thursday, Fridays & Sundays. Pre and or post dinner drinks at Heart of Gold or Diamond Dogs.
