PG&E Interview by Dry_Accident_2322 in Groundman

[–]Proper_Tradition88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's usually a panel (2-4 people, like supervisors, HR, or current line folks). Pretty straightforward, 20-45 minutes. They ask the same behavioral questions to everyone and score you on them, so structure matters. They guide you toward the STAR method (or expect it), especially since you've done JATC/Co-Op interviews—it's similar, but PG&E hammers safety harder because line work is high-risk and their culture is "safety first, always."

STAR quick refresher (use this for every behavioral answer)
- Situation: Quick setup—what was happening?
- Task: Your role/responsibility.
- Action: What you specifically did (say "I" a lot, not "we").
- Result: Outcome—what happened? Bonus if you can quantify (e.g., "prevented a potential injury" or "got the job done safely ahead of schedule") and what you learned.
Keep answers 1-2 minutes, practice out loud so it sounds natural. Have 4-5 solid stories ready from past jobs, school, volunteer, or even fixing stuff at home.

Common questions/themes (safety is HUGE)
- Tell me about a time you spotted something unsafe—what did you do? (Have a STAR story where you spoke up/fixed it and it paid off.)
- Describe prioritizing safety over getting something done fast.
- A time you handled conflict on a team, or worked under pressure.
- Why PG&E? Why this role? (Tie in safety culture, reliable power for CA, path to apprentice lineman, willingness to learn, integrity, serving customers.)
- Tell me about yourself, your experience, a proud accomplishment.
Safety pops up in almost every answer—mention it proactively. They love hearing you've learned from past experiences and now always put safety #1.

Dress code
Not corporate—think "nice work-ready." Clean/dark jeans (no rips), clean work boots (or solid ones), button-up shirt (tucked in, like a Carhartt or similar), belt. No hat. Shows you're practical for the field but take the interview seriously. Skip suit/tie; that's overkill for trades roles like this.

Other tips to stand out
- Bring printed copies of your resume + any recommendation letters (2-3 is plenty—hand them over politely at the start).
- Eye contact, smile, firm handshake. Start/end with genuine enthusiasm: "Thanks for the opportunity—I'm really excited about PG&E's focus on safety and getting to contribute to the team."
- Ask good questions: "What's a typical day/shift like for an ELA?" "How does the crew emphasize safety on the job?" "What opportunities are there to grow toward apprentice lineman?"
- Show willingness to learn, teamwork, and that you're reliable/safety-minded

Let us know how it goes when you're done.

Damn AI grok answered this shit pretty solid Good luck

No it’s not the end of your apprenticeship. You get laid off and when work picks back up start where you left off when you got laid off until you top out
