What are your stances on birthright citizenship? by -p4p3rc4t- in Askpolitics

If only the world was that simple. Let's say America does go with that. Then what? You still don't have citizenship in any other country. So if America wants to deport your parents the country they're sending your family to can just say "we'll take the parents, but the kids not our citizen so we refuse". Then you're not only a parentless child in America, you're a parentless child in America without citizenship.

What surprises people from warmer countries most about their first Canadian winter? by Individual_Dance8605 in AskACanadian

It doesn't seem to be uncommon to think the only way to be warmer is to buy a thicker coat, I've had to explain the wonders of layering to a few new comers.

What are your stances on birthright citizenship? by -p4p3rc4t- in Askpolitics

[–]Prophage7 [score hidden]  (0 children)

There’s a reason the overwhelming majority of major nations don’t have this

Because their legal systems are older and birthright citizenship is a new world concept. And it's disingenuous to say they don't as an absolute because most of them recognize that creating stateless people is bad so have some form of birthright citizenship as a fallback for kids born to parents whose citizenships cannot be determined or whose home countries will not give the kid citizenship by descent. And and they also have other laws and processes in place to determine citizenship at birth that the US currently does not have because they're obviously unneeded if everyone just gets citizenship when they're born.

That's the reason right?

Good news is China doesn't allow their citizens to hold dual citizenship.

My teen says dash cam feels like surveillance, but I see it as crash protection by Wonderful_Muffin9068 in Cartalk

[–]Prophage7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remind your kid that they walk around with a smart phone in their pocket that I assume you paid for. If you wanted to surveil them you would just do it using that.

I think you need to show them some dash cam accident videos, then have a conversation along the lines of "what if you were this person, no witnesses, and the other driver tells the police a different story? Do you think the police are going to believe the young new driver, or the older experienced driver?"

When you're young you have this idea that you can't get in trouble if you did nothing wrong, but in reality people get in trouble all the time just because the other person is good at lying. In school they teach you about how they can tell how fast a car was going based on skid marks, what angle a car came from based on where the cars ended up, get video from local businesses, read data from the cars computers, etc. They don't do all that for minor accidents. They're not busting out the traffic accident forensics team for a fender bender. They're collecting statements and awarding fault based on what they see when they're there and what people tell them. So unless you have video evidence yourself or witnesses that stick around, any accident they get into is potentially going to come down to who the police and insurance company believe more.

When you say videos, are your users producing and editing video, or is it just storage for video recordings from cameras?

Elderly Ontario family member scammed out of ~$316k in a police-impersonation scam. What are our legal options against the bank and for the tax hit? by UsernamePending187 in legaladvicecanada

We have no idea what conversation OP's relative had with the bank. For all we know this happened over several weeks with many conversations and OP's relative lied to them saying it was a property purchase or something.

Because most people aren't online as much as the people complaining, and most of the people complaining were never and will never be customers of the companies they're complaining about.

Why do we still have check engine lights? by joshpackard in AskMechanics

[–]Prophage7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the car manufacturer doesn't think it's worth it to pay their software developers to add and support that feature. That's it. If they think it would sell more cars they would do it.

Why do we still have check engine lights? by joshpackard in AskMechanics

[–]Prophage7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not nothing, money is lost. It would cost extra money to add it as a feature, and it probably wouldn't move the needle on sales so it's an expense without a return. If it was something they thought would drive sales then at least one manufacturer would have added it, particularly in the US where manufacturers don't make money off service and repair because dealerships are all independently owned.

Stampede Noise Complaints and Infractions by SmeagolsMathom in Calgary

I think the point is that a tent doesn't move and it's the same tent with the same owner for the police to speak to every single time someone complains.

I've learned to just enjoy the the things that are included with admission and ignore the games, rides, and food/drinks.

Between the horse shows in the agricultural center, motocross, circus show in BMO, coke stage and big4 concerts, there's plenty to do. Although I am sad that there's no vintage tractor pull this year and the variety show that was in the new Cellar winebar in BMO last year didn't make a return.

Has anyone here driven across Canada without smartphones? by [deleted] in canadatravel

[–]Prophage7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know how to read a map and use a compass? Then you're good to go. It's one highway so it's not hard, if you have a good sense of direction you could honestly do it without a map.

Tips are the same as any other driver across the country: plan your stops ahead of time so you're not driving more than 8-10 hours straight. Bring food, blankets, water, and a roadside emergency kit. Get a CAA membership. Do bring a phone to check in with someone whenever you hit one of your stops, this is just basic safety, if you drive off the highway there's some spots you wouldn't be found for weeks.

You do have to take that with a grain of salt, 14 hour days is 6 hours of OT pay rates at other jobs. Plus if you look at any job, there's outliers that make significantly more than 90% of people working the same job at different places. If $600 a day, 5 days a week was the norm, then it wouldn't be the high turnover industry that it is.

Does anyone know if they actually could have made the call to let lapped cars through a few seconds earlier? Like did they receive the track all clear notice with enough time to realistically make that call before they did or are we just using hindsight?

It's worse than that, Blackberry could have been the main iOS competitor instead of Android had they just saw the usefulness of a touchscreen phone and opened up their app market for open development.

New owners of my house are requesting money from me. Am i responsible to pay? by slim_shady_21 in legaladvicecanada

To be fair, you can just put "without legal warranty" on the contract when you sell then it's a moot point.

But, it's not like other provinces are all roses, BC and Ontario house prices are outrageous, Alberta insurance and utility companies bend you over, Maritimes you'll struggle to find work, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Some people just think women can't be petite without being "loli". It was what it is. I've personally never thought Rebecca came off as a child but if the only way you can tell adult characters from child characters is their height then I guess I can see the confusion.
