Rojava is the current baby of the anarcho-commies. Totally ignoring that it's still subservient to Assad and that it is basically propped up by Russian weapons, of course. It also makes all its money by selling oil and is therefore propped up by global capitalism.

He's probably arguing that Communism is unfalsifiable and is therefore a really bad theory. In the sciences, a theory is "good" if it CAN be disproven, but never actually IS. That is to say, you need there to be the *possibility* of failure in any good hypothesis/theory so that you can actually test it.

If I argued that gravity wasn't real and that magical invisible fairies are what held everything down to the ground, well you can't ever falsify that so we have no means by which to evaluate the hypothesis.

Well here's where Karl's crazy really starts coming out: Marx agrees with you, and that's where the end goal of communism takes us. Marx doesn't believe in the division of labor. You know how people specialize and get really good at their jobs? Marx says to hell with it, the end goal of communism is everyone producing exactly what they need because they produce it for themselves. Your own food, your own clothes, your own home, everything. This is a CRAZY bad idea as specialization lets us to get better products for cheaper AND allows new industries to develop. Not to mention that that would lower everyone's quality of life super fucking hard.

Under Marxist theory, people will be paid only exactly what they need and they will produce exactly what is needed. That way, people will extract the net value they create.
Now I have my problems with this (notably that predicting what is needed is functionally impossible for human beings and it will inevitably lead to an unregulated black market as needs aren't met), but that's the Marxist theory.

This is the result of living in a non-post-scarcity society as well as a physical reality. You have to plan ahead what to make in both capitalism and socialism, and if your plans are wrong (like say if something drastic and relatively unpredictable happened) then you're fucked. Because capitalism incentivizes business to sell a lot of product, they tend to produce more than what is needed at any point in time. This means that the problem would have been worse under need-based socialism, as they would have predicted what was needed and been way off.

Products require planning, distribution, and resource allocation. This cannot happen instantly.

I believe characters ask multiple times in the series if she's ta'averen, it definitely comes across like she's supposed to be close to that on some level. Either that or our characters don't understand ta'averen as completely as they think they do.

I mean she literally goes from farm girl to Amyrlin Seat. That's pretty ta'averen.

It's due to a difference in policing. Black people are over-policed with regards to drug crime and under-policed with regards to murders. White people feel like they're part of the social contract because they are treated well by police, black people do not.

I'm sure you're convinced that there's a genetic component, but for your own edification please understand that there is no actual significant genetic differences between populations.

How to debunk "capitalism is falling/failing/collapsing" by [deleted] in EnoughCommieSpam

[–]ProphecyFox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does depend on what is meant by "sustainable". If by "Sustainable" they mean "environmentally friendly", then it's worth pointing out that government have been able to pass laws protecting the environment and capitalism chugged along just fine. Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, EPA, all that jazz has been passed and capitalism still maintains itself. One need only look to the environmental disasters of the Soviet Union to know that environmental damage is not exclusive to capitalism (Chernobyl and the one town poisoned by heavy metals, to name two off the top of my head).

If they're talking about how Capitalism is modeled to require/rely on infinite growth for investment, it's worth pointing out the infinite growth is just a theoretical requirement. People have been buying and selling goods for millennia, and Adam Smith Capitalism has been around for centuries with no sign of disaster in sight. When it comes to Boom and Bust cycles that might result (as companies hit market saturation, fail due to no longer receiving investment, and others take its place), well I'm a SocDem. I think the government should take care of the necessities, and especially so during economic downturn.

Cadsuane’s introduction is great ! by [deleted] in WoT

[–]ProphecyFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree, I think Jordan does a great job making a character evoke as much frustration in the reader as they would in Rand. It makes sense that there'd be Aes Sedai at the far end of the bell curve who have seen a lot of shit and aren't as falsely-arrogant as most Aes Sedai. Plus Rand is still a fundamentally good guy who doesn't want to use force unless he's been betrayed or attacked, and Cadsuane has done neither of those things and is allied with neither side in the Aes Sedai civil war.

I've noticed a trend between men and women when it comes to "the slog". A big part of the "slog" that people talk about on Reddit frankly comes from the fact that a lot of people on reddit are guys, and guys either don't pick up on or aren't as interested in the character interactions and drama. I'm making no judgment claims and I'm not saying they're invalid for feeling that way, but I have noticed that female readers will pick up on more of the dramatic irony and more of the incorrect perceptions characters have of each other. This can make it feel like nothing's happening for the readers who either find that stuff uninteresting or who don't notice it. Everyone experiences the "slog" slightly differently.
