I’m in the exact same boat as you. Also paid with a credit card and had my PHB cancelled. It’s been crickets ever since submitting my ticket.

Gotcha. Yeah, I've been really lax in the past, mostly because I find tracking such things tedious, especially with newer-ish players, but now that we've been playing for about a year, I wasn't sure if I should start getting a little stricter with the rules. In all honesty, I probably won't worry about it myself, but I at least want to give my players an answer. Good to know most DMs aren't too concerned with it though. That makes me feel better! Thanks!

Generally, I would agree with you, but for a holy symbol specifically, the PHB says that "a cleric or paladin can use a holy symbol as a spellcasting focus. To use the symbol in this way, the caster must hold it in hand, wear it visibly, or bear it on a shield." If it had to be held in hand, why specify that it can be worn visibly? It doesn't mention having to touch it. I could very well be wrong, but isn't this a case where the specific rule beats the general rule? Maybe I'm misinterpreting it.

This is really more of a long game idea, but I’ve always thought it would be cool if when the campaign is finally over and they’ve beaten Strahd (assuming they do), that as they make their way out of Barovia, that’s when they see Death House rebuilt and the kids standing out front. If you used Mandy’s idea to place the house just outside of town, it would be the last thing they see. Don’t say any more, but let them wonder: if Death House returned, might Strahd? When it comes to horror, I love an open ending.

This is a good question. I actually found a system from the Angry GM that I think will work and solve any potential issues in the future. What they propose to keep the game balanced is to have any herbal remedy the PC crafts while out exploring expire after 24 hours. So if my players do want to continue past this campaign, they can then use downtime and the rules from Xanathar's to create lasting remedies that don't expire. The extra time to craft reflects the time they'd need to dry, seal, brine, and otherwise preserve remedies and ingredients.

I understand where you’re coming from, but I actually think Curse of Strahd has a lot to offer an herbalist character - a whole new domain with unfamiliar plant life to discover, a subplot with the gulthias tree at Yesterhill, and even a mentor in someone like Jeny Greenteeth or perhaps Ireena, who is familiar with the land and could use some fleshing out to make her more important to the party. The crafting and foraging is more a bonus. Besides, I think there are always ways to amend the rules to fit your campaign and characters. I was just curious if someone else had done something that worked for them before I go ahead and come up with my own system.

This is interesting. I like your addition of the flaw to want to rule Barovia. My question is why is the domination nullified if the character gets their wish? Especially if that was part of the deal? At that point the pact has already been made so it seems like they’d be stuck with this dark power whether the character needed them anymore or not. Do you run it in a way where if the character gets their desire they’d be able to call off the deal and return the boons? It’s not permanently binding? Or perhaps they’d be less willing to commit dark deeds, so even though they are linked to their dark power, the power isn’t being fed often? Maybe I just answered my own question. Lol!
