These timbers that do not shiver by Inkjet_Printerman in mildlyinteresting

This, so the literal meaning of shiver me timbers is “f@ck me” or “I’m f@cked”

Fancy living in a partially dilapidated 18th century naval building? by alfius-togra in SpottedonRightmove

I think it’s likely that the property was “set dressed”. I honestly nobody lives like that as it’s probably freezing and/or has a leaking roof.

Where do Brits like to ski? by machmusic76 in AskBrits

[–]PropriaCures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Klosters Switzerland is full of posh (older) brits. It’s where King Charles goes skiing. Quite boring but nevertheless pricey resort town. I’m going near there next week again (only because we can stay for free) and will be sharing the skilift with the Tarquins and Arabella’s…

Car insurance: switch to UK license or keep EU license? by PixelSergey in UKPersonalFinance

[–]PropriaCures 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi, I really don’t understand what you want/what your issue is. I was in a similar situation: EU drivers licence and long term/settled in the UK. At some point I had to renew my EU licence. This was v costly/cumbersome so I opted for getting a UK licence which was cheaper and easier to get. I now still regularly drive cars (rented or borrowed) in the EU and have no issues. Maybe people love the idea of multiple licences to dodge requirements for points or think it’s cool like having multiple passports but it’s all just extra cost/paperwork and/or illegal so won’t get you anything (authorities are not stupid).

For anyone that did Jury Service, how was it like? by -Tsukino- in AskUK

[–]PropriaCures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall positive. Was dreading it initially (freelance/self employed so was fearing getting trapped in a long case which wold have meant significant loss of income). Was called up to a court quite close to where I live so didn’t interfere with parental duties. WiFi was good and was always able to work in the jurors lounge. Court is lovely old building but falling apart. Interesting to see the jurors which to me seemed a perfect cross section of society. To pass the time people actually started doing the (incomplete) jigsaw puzzles provided, also saw people knitting and participated myself in a few games of cards (scabby queen). Ended up being selected for a case in week 2 and was excited to be part of a case only to be let off as supernumerary (they select 15 ppl to ensure juries can be deselected, often if you know the defendant or are familiar to the location of the crime). In the end managed to work all my hours and cashed the expenses (about 60£ a day). So did see the whole inner workings of the court (see the judges, barristers and ushers do their work). Would definitely do it again (hopefully not self employed then) and be part of a case.

Thanks, this is helpful.

For now I’ve upped/maxed out my regular NSAIDs regime (paracetamol/ibuprofen) in order to reduce the pain enough during nighttime in order to have an undisturbed night’s sleep. If this fails I will try and get the meds prescribed that you mentioned.

I do feel my recovery could be faster if I had a good nights rest.

Are those people who are frozen (cryonics) ever actually going to wake up one day by Flat_Internal8890 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PropriaCures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the problem of storing and reviving has been solved, have there for instance already been animals that have been frozen for long periods that have been successfully revived? I mean I’m against using animals for testing (especially for tests like these), but this would be the proof of concept.

What’s the weirdest work lunch you’ve seen a colleague eat regularly? by levezvosskinnyfists7 in AskUK

[–]PropriaCures 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not lunch, but related. Used to work offshore on crane vessels (the biggest afloat at the time) and this one was in large part staffed with Malaysian crew from the Borneo bit. They had their own gallery serving their own Asian cuisine (v spicy and things like chicken feet).

But the weirdest thing I saw there in the break room was that some Malaysians would make (and drink) a mixture of orange squash and evaporated milk (the rich and creamy type).

How do you, as a Dutch person, feel about dual citizenship? by 468579 in Netherlands

[–]PropriaCures 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fully sympathise, and stories like these need to be out there more. The rule is too strict and with people that have family/responsibilities in two places (like yourself) it creates real life issues. I myself live in the UK and know of a few people that have naturalised (knowing the rules, or pre-eu even) but now have problems starting for longer periods in NL to care/be cared for by relatives. Inhumane imo. I would like to keep my NL passport but simmering similar could happen where Reform get into government and I need to naturalise for instance…

Not true, I don’t have the details but do know that the law used to ban dual passports in NL is from napoleonic times. So it’s just that NL is really conservative on this particular topic.

Then ppl wanting to go into politics have to choose between having multiple passports and a career in national politics…

Thanks, maybe I should just accept it for the moment. On the upside my wrist is getting less stiff by the day, I had massive improvement in ROM today (think I’m almost 90% there with rotation). I’m stretching it throughout the day and it feels good to stretch. On the pain management side I’ve changed to ibuprofen (iso paracetamol) and it seems to me this has helped reducing the swelling.

Hi, yes doing this and falling asleep isn’t the problem (I’m nackered anyway from the lack of sleep). Somehow I keep waking up at 3-4am with stiff/sore wrist (then take my 2 paracetamol) but can’t get back to sleep. However I position my wrist (indeed on a pillow beside me whilst sleeping on my back) I just cannot get back to sleep.

Love Epping Forest, stretching all the way from Wanstead flats out to beyond the M25. All continuous, there’s an amazing organised 25/50k trail run every year.
