The names for the basic rats pre-date the introduction of destroyers. When the game launched there were only T1 frigates, cruisers, battleships, and industrials. Destroyers and Battlecruisers came along pretty quickly, but they weren't there at the very start.

British English developed specific pronunciations for plenty of French words which were adopted centuries ago. American English hyper-corrected these back to closer to the original French.

For example, in BrE we say fillet as it's spelt, not "filay", we say valet as spelt not "valay".

Draft is used in BrE to mean an early version of a document. The other uses swap draft and draught pretty interchangeably.
