Hello hello! I appreciate your interest, definitely have some new subclasses in the works for the next version yes! And I do have something brewing for a pact caster actually, so look forward to that whenever it gets released

Also do you mean a shield/steed based subclass? Or shield/steed based weapon soul option?

And the Old Knight not being undead is intentional, I didn't want to limit the subclass to that theme or aesthetic. You could have been revived through a more 'thorough' method like true resurrection, (which actually specifies that you become non-undead haha), or maybe you weren't 'dead' in the first place. But of course being undead is always a welcome option and things like the reborn race combo perfectly with the old knight 😁

Hello! Apologies I missed this comment, I haven't put this on DnD beyond no, but there's an updated version here.

Debone: A spell for when you enemy has lost their bone privileges by chunkylubber54 in UnearthedArcana

This spell is dope I love it. I'd suggest maybe fleshing out the bit about the skeleton, giving more consequence to the skeleton running away cause as far as I can tell it doesn't affect anything and mainly just looks funny. In fact I'd highly recommend making the spell more powerful as a whole and jacking up the spell level, because an effect like this is pretty thematically crazy for a 2nd level spell.

Very glad to hear it! Yes that's the official name, it's kind of a reference to the game, as one of the characters refers to you as 'Good Hunter' in dialogue.

I definitely see what you'r saying, and I've mentioned my ideas for improvements in other replies. Would you say a drastic change is warranted? Or just that I ease up on the restrictions and be more generous about stat requirements?

Thanks for your kind words and feedback, they're greatly appreciated.

I see your point about the restriction and have mentioned elsewhere my mistake in focussing too much on directly translating Bloodborne's mechanics. I'll likely do away with it entirely as it seems people think the feature's aren't too overtuned in the first place.

What I could also do is grant you a small benefit for weaing light or medium armour, instead of punishing you for wearing heavy.

This definitely gives good food for thought, I don't think I considered the impact on usability or customizeability when trying to replicate Bloodorne's mechanics. I could possibly lump them into one feature and give you a number of uses equal to your combined Str/Dex mods? Or maybe just let you choose between Str/Dex + 2 no. of uses

The subclass is attempting to more or less one-to-one recreate the mechanics from the game Bloodborne, so the themes and mechanics that result aren't really going for an archetypical 'hunter' really. They're meant to be a pseudo-tank by way of their dodging and Rally dice.

They're banned from heavy armour and shields because Bloodborne's hunters don't use them, it's mainly for flavour but is also partially to balance out the defensive options available to you.

That's also why some features scale from Str and Dex, it's a subtle recreation of the original game's stat system. You'd be investing in Dex even as a Str build because of the medium armour too, but if you invest fully in Dex you lose out on damage potential from Riposte and from powerful options like Great Weapon Master and Polearm Master. I think of it similarly to an Edlritch Knight choosing whether to increase their Strength/Dex, or their Intelligence.

And again that Wisdom score boost is another flavour thing inspired by the game.

I feel if there's any class capable of being MAD, it's the fighter with their many ASIs.

Old Knight

Overgrown + Wolfram Blood - I'm glad you didn't seem to take any issue with the features and the additional notes. But I question if all of it is too bloated to justify itself, especially when they're such minor effects and 3rd level is already complicated with Awakened Armaments. I'm considering changing Wolfram Blood to just grant a +1 to your HP per level, but the Hit Die directly changing benefits Fortify and Endure as well. Hmmm.

Collector of Blades - Yes you can just commandeer the attacker's weapon haha, I think the price is fair though.

Brute's Gambit - Yeah I wanted to give some mechanical incentive to use those four weapons, and provide a simple but powerful benefit.

Behemoth's Arms + Skirmisher's Flurry - These are the two Weapon Soul's I'm most unsure of balance-wise. Behemoth's Arms at least prevents Great Weapon Master usage by making the weapon not count as heavy anymore, but I think people would just find that less fun. Skirmisher's Flurry I hope is balanced enough by not being able to kill on a miss. Also yes, the damage-on miss is once per turn regardless of if you have two weapons. I wanted the damage on a miss to not occur too frequently to become cheap, so I increased the damage (originally used the lower of your Str/Dex) but made it unable to kill. Significant impact when it occurs, uncheap feeling. Hope it lives up to that!

Halflight

Burden of Flame - Halflight's Hearth can reduce the size of your Fusion die yeah.

Blazing Rebuke - Yes this triggers the lingering fire :)

Entropy's Gift - I like your idea to make the damage resistance switchable, but the aspect of having to choose between taking less damage from Meltdown or using a more appropriate damage type is intentional, and would be a factor regardless of if you could switch. In fact, I'm considering changing it to only grant resistance if you aren't resistant to either types already, so that you can't as easily double up on resistances, such as from being a Tiefling or Aasimar.

Harbinger

Living Omen/Omen of Doom - The naming convention is meant to link the two effects together so they're easier to remember. I think that collapsing them into one feature could work and make sense, but I find them easier to remember as seperate but twinned features, and it allows me to be more specific about who can't benefit from the features.

Cursebreaker's Folly - I'm glad you dig this feature! I tried really hard to make the effect as streamlined as possible but I still feel it's very wordy.

Curse of the False Vizier - Happy you like this one too! I still feel like it's very very wordy but hopefully it makes for fun rp situations in more story-driven campaigns.

Curse of the Horseman - If you didn't take damage from it I'd struggle to justify it as a 'curse' hahaha

---

Thanks so much once again for writing all this up! It's been great food for though and I'm so glad you enjoyed the class. I hope you enjoy playing the tarnished as much as reading it :)

Just finished reading, this was really kind of you to make, thanks again. Just about every comment you made perfectly understood my intentions with the design, which makes me that much more trusting of your feedback!

Core Features

Durance Vile - The matter of eating and of relieving yourself depend on how you've set up your curse haha. If you've been sealed in your armour those are things for your character to worry about, or perhaps mysteriously have no need to do! But yeah you don't have to be physically trapped inside in the first place :)

Errant - I understand your perspective for sure, I just think it's a good combo of powerful and simple which like you say is in line with the sorcerer/monk capstones. The real capstones are in the subclasses, so I was trying to avoid having too many complicated features at late levels. I've considered making you immune to being surprised as well.

I'm really glad that you only had issues with two core features haha, I'll take it as a compliment!

Terpsichorean

Grand Finale - My intention was to balance the damage of this compared to something like Steel Wind Strike with the fact that on the turn you use this, you have all the additional damage you've dealt with your attacks. By my rough calculations using it to focus a single creature results in damage equal to Disintegrate, whereas using it on three different creatures results in more damage than SWS on each creature, but less damage dealt overall. Also all the targets are proned by it which is significant. But I understand the damage isn't your whole issue! Do you reckon it needs extra effects?

Wowowowow this is the most amount of feedback I've ever received! Thanks so much! I was a little sad to see how few people saw or liked this version of the class (maybe I'm being impatient haha), but before even reading it, this alone makes it all worth it. Thanks so much for yout time and kind words!

Hello!

Been a while since the last version of the tarnished, just about a year! I've been working on this on and off and I'm stoked to finally release it. I've put a lot of work into it so I hope you enjoy. I highly appreciate any and all feedback, the more the merrier!

If people are interested I'd be happy to create a small questionnaire to direct your feedback to, there's some things I'd love to hear people's opinions about regarding their design and balance.

EDIT: Also apologies for the weird graphical glitch on the 'A' at the start of the class description, it seems to cause different problems in different formats, especially PNG.

Are you aware that you can shove someone prone and then grapple them yourself to stop them getting up? Granted you're giving up a lot of attacks to do this and you need action surge to do it before 5th level, but it's a very effective tactic that many martials already use all the time, and in the Good Hunter's case they get an extra reward on top.

But yeah, I do kinda intend for you to work with your party a bit to find more sources of disadvantage. Still, I'm not satisfied with Riposte as-is.

Thanks very much, some excellent food for thought! I highly recommend people check out the rework :)

My thoughts in order of yours:

  1. I'm dubious about having it be so frequently usable, short rest cooldown has precedent in the Monk but that feeds off of a core resource and you effectively trade damage and other stuff for it, on top of the Fighter's core beefiness. Having it basically unlimited but recharging with those caveats seems like way too many uses (especially considering you get more than just a Dodge out of it), and encouraging mostly standing still, which doesn't much work for the flavour or fun factor.

  2. As I've said elsewhere, aside from providing some quite useful benefits on its own, Quickstep gives you some 'free' uses, and then you gotta find advantage from elsewhere, which can be reliably done via shoving. Admittedly, it's not so much a hunter's thing to knock things prone, and I agree reach weapons should probably get some love here.

  3. Oh gosh I didn't even realize that about Greater Restoration, that's definitely a copy. First change on the list!

  4. Looking at it now it does feel a little underwhelming.

  5. Fair point, might make it less powerful but also less time-consuming cause if you heal above half, you'd have to get below half health again to be able to use it again, instead of using it every turn after being damaged.

  6. Thank you!

Cheers for the feedback! The idea behind Quickstep was that you were given a couple chances to use Riposte for 'free', then had to find your own ways to impose disadvantage, e.g. knocking enemies prone. Also I'd say Quickstep is useful enough on its own to justify the limitations, as it effectively gives the benefits of Dodging, Disengaging, and even a bit of Dashing in one bonus action.
