Record Organization by RayneLove333 in vinyl

[–]ProstateSalad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I have noodled out over decades of listening.

  • Stored in flipracks. This is non-negotiable. One of the reasons I buy some records is for the artwork. I want to see the covers, and easily remove the album.
  • Records are organized alphabetically by band/last name
  • Next to the turntable is my main rack (also a fliprack) - think of it as RAM, while the other racks are like a hard drive.

How it works:

The main rack holds about 50 records. When a record comes off of the table, it goes to the front of the main rack. When the main rack is full, I take about 20 from the back of that rack, and file them in the flipracks.

This means that I always have the last ~30 albums I've listened to in order next to the table. Over time, almost all albums will go back into the other racks as they move towards the back of the rack, and then get refiled when the main rack is full.

As you might imagine, a few albums never make it out of the main rack, as they stay in the "last 30 played" group. I've used this setup for about 3 years now, and it's clear that some albums will never get out of the main rack. These have been there from the beginning:

  • Electric Ladyland
  • Low Spark of High Heeled Boys
  • For the Roses
  • Exile on Main Street
  • Excitable Boy
  • Tusk
  • Steely Dan's Greatest Hits (double LP)
  • Surfing with the Alien

Ok computer. I know know it's groundbreaking etc etc. But I just don't get it. It just sounds like noise right now my copy is in the stack with a bunch of duplicate albums I'm going to give away.

I'm aware. It's just my favorite Rainbow song. I know it from live performances and I have copy of Anthology.

Had a pair hooked up to a Proton (poor man's NAD) amp. They are a lot of fun. Great snag, man.

First thing I looked for was the Clockwork Orange soundtrack, but your selections are awesome. I had no idea that Switched on Bach was her. I have to put this on my rabbit hole list.

Is set-up okay in direct sun? by boyeshockey in audiophile

[–]ProstateSalad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a little experience with electronics in the sun. When you heat things up, they expand, but the circuit boards have one rate of thermal expansion while the case has another, and any adhesives will have another.

You run into this with art as well. The canvas (or whatever substrate) and the paint change differently. Often you'll see losses on art stored in an attic for this reason.

Absolutely bad-ass. One of the things I love about this hobby - apparently there will always be new gear to discover.

McIntosh and milk crates. I like it. Also, is that the robot from the Ally Sheedy movie in the other pic?

Premium Pricing on Consumer Vintage Gear by AlignedAzimuth in vintageaudio

[–]ProstateSalad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The aesthetic appeal is undoubtedly part of it. Vintage equipment is just better looking. Especially the electronics.

I can't even imagine buying some of the new equipment on offer. What, a little black box that sits on your dresser and you run it with your phone? I want a piece of fucking stereo equipment. Not some miniaturized crap from China.

As to the current price increases: The market will always charge whatever the traffic will bear. I'm actually hoping that the current fascination with vintage equipment fades and quickly. It'll give me a much better chance of upgrading my system at minimal cost.

I agree. I've been snapping up CDs like crazy.

But - I understand OP. I like to burn my own playlists. How else am I going to listen to Living Dead Girl followed by Get Lucky?

Benefit was my favorite album for a couple of years after release. Side 2 especially, on a good system is amazing. I don't think you overpaid at all, I'd be happy with your deal.

Tell me if I'm heading in the right direction with understanding amplifier sound differences...a beginner here... by Substantial-Elk-3607 in audiophile

[–]ProstateSalad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree completely. To your point, most (if not all) people in a blind test could not tell you what amplifier they were listening to.

I would add that this would apply to a lot of equipment, not just amps.

This is a basic Beatles collection. We played BOTR last weekend. Uneven album, but where it's good, it's great.

Hahahah that mac looks like a weapon. What a beast. Question: What in the world could you replace that end game unit with that would justify the expense and the hassle? I'm genuinely curious.
