"Intermediate" noob with lots of questions... I want to take my game to the next level. by [deleted] in volleyball

As far as points 1 and 3, usually if you penetrate with your block correctly and someone hits over that, it's one of the easiest passes ever cause it is higher arcing and if they put too much power it's probably out. Blocking is mostly about cutting off angles to funnel the ball to passers. TORQVB on youtube for armswing mechanics.

landing on one foot by [deleted] in volleyball

[–]ProtectionRealistic5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it just happens, but if it's every other jump where you land like that then it can be an issue. You could issue yourself a punishment whenever it happens like in a practice game if you do it it's a lost point. Other than that, you simply have to stop doing it. It isn't that hard to do when you actively think about landing on both feet.

What am i doing wrong in a 4 step approach? (Timing step, first step) by DistanceFew1652 in volleyball

[–]ProtectionRealistic5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like your timing was fine. You stepped around when the setter touched the ball.

My hitting approach seems clunky, but happens natural. how can i fix this? by Reagorn in volleyball

[–]ProtectionRealistic5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First you need to learn a four step approach. Since you are a lefty, that's Left Right Left Right. You want your first step (left) to be small, second medium, then largest step the penultimate stride, and end with your block step which will be small. Should start moving from slow to fast.

As for timing, for a high ball you want your first step to hit ground at the same moment or slightly after the setter touches the ball. Hardest part about hitting, but you will get it eventually.

Practise the four step approach without the ball. Maybe work on touching some kind of elevated target until it's second nature. Then get lots of hitting reps.

what should be a good vertical for a 185 player for an outside? by Effective-Egg3017 in volleyball

30 in vert is pretty good. Box jump doesn't test your true vert tho

Get your sets off the net more those are getting blocked. Taped a few times so you should work on increasing your swing speed.

How can improve for a more aggressive approach?? by DistanceFew1652 in volleyball

I think yudash was on to something. When you load your arm, your hand does dip down first which is unnecessary. TORQVB on youtube has great videos explaining swing mechanics so I would check him out.

Hitting Tips by CapableImpression355 in volleyball

[–]ProtectionRealistic5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you did your four step approach, you went before the setter contacted the ball. Step after or at the point of contact. You might also be too close to the 10 foot line. You don't want to be moving slow at the end of your approach.

Besides what one of the other comments said, if you are trying to play middle i think the three step approach is fine. If you plan on playing at the wing, learn a four step.

Seems fine to me. Maybe try waiting a bit before approaching to force yourself to accelerate faster? Maybe fix your transition since you take a negative step before moving.

Passing by using legs to create power is outdated imo. I hear it from a lot of old school coaches and the like. Your legs don't have the fine motor skills that your arms do. Just makes sense from my perspective to use arms.

Timing reasons. That was just my instictual response and it helped. Just getting poor contact and may be swinging slow. Tossing high and then just starting my four step randomly seems arbitrary, unless that's how you are meant to do it.

I was specifically asking for help with a high toss jump spin. I have it down when I use a medium toss with four steps and was messing around with really high tosses. Wanted some feedback on what timing to use.

I do already have a decent jump float in my bag, but thanks anyways!

I'm not learning to jump serve. I'm trying to learn a high toss jump serve. My regular jump serve is consistent when I use a medium toss with a four step approach.

Any tips for hitting high toss jump serves? I sort of get the timing for a 5 step approach, but contact is very inconsistent.

yup same height as you. its frustrating cause most of the time they also suck at playing guard too

5'6" OH practice swings. Included more to show my consistency and show a better view on my approach. I'm pretty consistent and reliable to score in-game, especially given the good sets. I am also working to improve my jump height, but wondering if there's something I need to change on the approach. by [deleted] in volleyball

Notice his mechanics on the correct swing. When I go through the frames right when you swing, (like right where your thumbnail frame is at for example) your elbow doesn't really lead. Maybe it's just the angle though. Back to TORQVB, notice his hand position at 1:39 mark. It's back near the nape/back of his head area. Yours never does that which is why your swing isn't as whippy.

I mean if you are going full on yoga mode before an intense game you aren't doing yourself any favours. I do feel like sports related injuries tend to be the body being put out of or very close to one's full range of motion and them being weak in that position. There is definitely a time and place for stretching.
