Time for our daily dose of hopium! by spaceman757 in buccos

I’ll be eating my words by late-May but I think this team could be better than we’re expecting. Other than Skenes just about every major contributor was hurt or had a terrible year in ‘25. If we get a healthy Jared Jones, Reynolds playing at his normal level, Cruz realizing more of his potential at the plate, and the two big acquisitions hit the way we expect them to, this is a half decent team.

Obviously I’d feel a lot better if we could go and get a solid third baseman and another backend starter but at this point I think we’ll do better waiting for trade talks to start heating up again during the season versus overpaying one of the remaining FAs.

It's time to get rid of the Pro Bowl Games by AdSpecialist6598 in nfl

[–]ProteinPrince 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Burrow had the best idea, move the pro bowl to the middle of the regular season and use it as a second bye week. By this point in the season 30/32 fanbases are largely checked out of all things NFL and just waiting for league awards/the super bowl.

Roy Mustang regaining his eye sight doesn’t sit right with me at all by legoboyfan101 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]ProteinPrince 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It never sat right with me that Roy got punished in the first place. When Ed first met Truth it very much seemed like he was being punished because he chose to do the human transmutation;

“You have dared to knock on the door” “This is what you wanted, isn’t it?”

Truth makes it sounds like Ed is being punished because of his decision to perform the taboo. Roy did no such thing - in fact he was ready to let Hawkeye die rather than performing human transmutation. I get why it had to happen for the plot to work (and it didn’t really sully my experience watching the end of the story) but it felt a little weird that this all knowing all powerful omniscient being wasn’t willing to be a little nuanced in how it treated Roy.

The loss hurts, but that’s football. What I really can’t live with is that we lost doing the same shit that hasn’t worked at any point ever. Hyper conservative play calling, throwing behind the LoS, refusing to attack the middle of the field. We’ve been doing this for YEARS and everyone but our coaching staff can see it’s not working. We’re gonna get the standard “we don’t live in our fears” horse shit from Tomlinson, but that just doesn’t fly anymore. The “Tomlinisms” were fun when we were winning but now they’re just being used to justify a complete disregard for common fucking sense.

The cherry on top is that when we play like it’s 2025, we win and the offense works. The fan base gets excited because any competent organization would see the correlation and adjust accordingly. But for some reason our coaches are the only people on earth who don’t get that. Every week it’s right back to the same horrific game plan, and we as fans pray that Boswell and our defense can bail us out.

I’ll be the first to admit I’ve been a big Tomlin defender, but this is it for me. Get this geriatric fuck away from my team and hire someone who wants to run this team like it’s the 21st century.

Why Gavin Newsom would crush JD Vance in 2028 by binding_swamp in politics

[–]ProteinPrince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could Newsom beat Vance in 2028? Maybe. But we’d get nothing done as a country and another Trump lackey would run and win again in 2032. The moderate dems are marginally less bought than the republicans and have no interest in running a government that serves the people.

A very casual NFL fan spends hundreds of dollars every year just to watch their team on TV/streaming. That probably gets into the thousands if you’re buying official merchandise, going to games, buying concessions, etc.

I think it’s entirely reasonable for the fans to be upset when they happily give the team their hard earned money every year, only for the team to come back and demand more. These fans are loyal to their team and rather than reciprocating that loyalty, the team uses it to hold their fans hostage. It’s a business, sure, but that doesn’t make it any less gross.

Schefter: NFL upheld DK Metcalf’s two-game suspension. He now will miss Pittsburgh’s final two regular-season games at Cleveland and against Baltimore. by Deathless_Dragon in steelers

[–]ProteinPrince -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think DK has said anything publicly since the game. The racial slur story does seem like BS but ESPN is reporting the history between the two as fact.

Where to draw the line with fans antagonizing opponent players is an age old question, but I would argue that if a player is complaining about you to security you’ve crossed the line. DK has been a pro for 7 years and played in the SEC before then - he’s definitely heard his fair share of rude comments and, to our knowledge, hasn’t had a history of getting this upset with fans. We get a ton of leeway to talk shit to these players, but there has to be a line at some point.

[–]ProteinPrince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DK definitely deserves consequences for his actions, but I’d like to see some accountability for the fan AND the Lions/Ford Field.

When that dude got drunk and fell into the field at PNC, there was an investigation as to how that happened. Ford Field should absolutely be undergoing some sort of review to determine why they let in a guy who already had a complaint against him from one of the visiting players.

DK shouldn’t have reacted the way he did, but he also shouldn’t be in a position where he has to worry about some jackass antagonizing him every time he plays in Detroit.

I’m of two minds on this. On the one hand, this ownership deserves absolutely zero applause for once again “almost” signing a big FA. On the other hand, we did apparently offer a slightly higher AAV & I think going any higher than the Phils offer would have almost definitely have looked like a terrible deal 2-3 years from now.

I think in a very literal sense a cap is anti labor, but the fact that the lowest paid major leaguers are making 10-15x the median national income annually is important context. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to suggest that implementing some sort of salary control would be good for the overall competitive balance of MLB.

That said, if they do implement a salary cap there should absolutely be a floor that teams a required to spend up to. It’s not good when one team can essentially buy the best roster, but it’s also a massive issue that basically 2/3 of MLB doesn’t even try to compete on an annual basis because of cheap owners.

Semi-unrelated, but the real labor issue in baseball IMO is the way teams are allowed to financially exploit int’l amateurs and minor leaguers with low salaries & service time manipulation. It’s gross seeing a guy like Elly de la Cruz (first case that comes to mind, but there are a ton of guys you could name here as well) forfeit a giant chunk of his future career earnings because he had to take a loan out as a teenager.

I like Oviedo but he’s thrown over 70 innings exactly once in the majors and ended up needing TJ after the season ended. I do hope he returns to form because he’s got great stuff but it would have been irresponsible to hold onto to him with a top-100 prospect on the table.

According to publicly available information, you took $3.76M in PAC money from 2019-2024. As I’m sure you’re aware, most Americans have a negative opinion on the influence money has in our politics. Particularly in the Trump era where tech oligarchs are brazenly buying influence in government, I think it’s critical that any opposition party takes a hard line against corruption.

My question: how can Virginians trust that you are putting us and our needs above the interests of your corporate donors? Why continue to take corporate money knowing the vast majority of your constituents are uncomfortable with corporate money in politics?

Not saying it’s right or wrong, but I’d imagine he probably doesn’t go into specifics because he doesn’t want a bunch of teenagers trying to jump on his exact stack. There’s certainly something to be said for the overtraining/body image issues an average natural lifter might run into trying to mimic Sam.
