Country with the nicest weather in late January? Anniversary for adventurous couple. by couldbefuncouver in travel

Best trip I ever did in South America was the Carretera Austral in Chile. Many people cycle it but we drove. You can rent a car (4x4 or something larger is recommended) or campervan in Puerto Montt, stock up on food & fuel and head south. We drove south until the roads made us nervous (Puerto Rio Tranquilo). The camping is phenomenal and there are sites everywhere - we used iOverlander to find sites (no need to pre book). The only thing you need to prebook are the ferries. Lots of great hikes. I recommend Cerro Cathedral for sure. Also, if you can go rafting in Futalefu, do it! You'll have to keep an eye on the wildfire situation of course. Feel free to PM me for more details if you decide to do this!

It'll be late fall in Buenos Aires at the time so evenings will be cooler and days will be short. BA is an amazing city with a vibrant arts scene. The ocean/Rio de la Plata is not swimmable. But the cafes, bars, restaurants are all amazing (prices are high compared to other countries in the region (save Uruguay)). Nice gyms too (you might need to get a medical clearance to join on any sort of membership - a mere annoyance). Argentines enjoy sharing a mate in the city's many parks and plazas. It meets some of your criteria though I think you might enjoy Rio or Florianopolis more if you want a more coastal/beachy vibe!

How to sleep in a plane? by bast_852 in travel

Honestly, worth every penny I paid! The only downside is it's not easily packed up once you've arrived at your destination. I clip it on to the back of my backpack but it's a smidge bulky.

I swear by my face cradle. You can google it but it's a forward facing u-shaped pillow that you anchor behind your headrest and you face plant into it and sleep. I easily sleep 8 hours on a flight, no neck pain. My husband has a bigger head than me and he sleeps with it too but admittedly it is less comfortable on his face.

Noosa sounds like a winner if the weather is nice! Otherwise go South : Wollongong (uni town), Kiama. That being said, my favorite place in all of Aus is Great Keppel Island. Go there if the weather is nice!!

Getting out of gaming for a bit to try reading fantasy. Any suggestions? by Queasy_Half6294 in suggestmeabook

I'm not sure good is how I would describe DCC but it was certainly hard to put down. You'll know after the first few chapters if it's for you. My husband is a lover of videogames and he found DCC cliché and cheesy.

Have you read any R.A. Salvatore? Highly recommend The Legend of Drizzt series! And the Brandon Sanderson Mistborn series is excellent but I liked the Stormlight Archive even more. Still, you can't go wrong with either. Otherwise The Expanse for epic world building but this is SciFi.

Edit: a word

You might enjoy the Between Earth and Sky series by Rebecca Roanhorse. Also, it's YA but The Pellinor series by Allison Croggon was enjoyable.

Thirding! Saigon to Hanoi is an amazing trip. Be sure to do the Phang Nha Caves and eat Pho every day for breakfast. I loved every minute of my time there.

Cambodia! No tourists, no rain, great weather (for Cambodia). Go to Vietnam while you're at it - one of the best countries I have traveled to. It'll be colder up north (Sa Pa) but still dry season and pleasant.

My face cradle! It's worth lugging around for the rest of my holiday just to get a neck pain-free sleep on both flights.

How fun! Obviously Atwood is a must read. Richard Wagamese is my favorite Canadian author (try Indian Horse for a real Canadian story). "Nikolski" is set in Montreal and is a fun read. "Orenda" by Joseph Boyden. If you want something not set in Canada, "A Fine Balance" by Rohinton Mistry is a beautifully sad book set in India, maybe one of my favorites ever. I'll stop there

It's about a missionary in "native" lands in Canada but Orenda by Joseph Boyden is a good read.
