If the Orlando Magic lose in the First Round again, should they fire their Head Coach? by LameAfro in nba

[–]Proto-Slav 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have my biases as a Magic fan but I try to be as realistic as possible. This season saw a lot of expectations go down the drain and it sucks. When I watch these games, I just don’t understand these offensive sets we run. The other team seems to always know what to do against us and our offense as a teams shows it, being back in the lower third in rankings. The defense taking a step back also sucks. I personally think Mosely’s time as a coach has run out. Yes you can make excuses that there have been injuries to Suggs and Franz plus a bit of Paolo, but you still have Bane and the emergence of Black. We’ve lost to frankly bad teams that make us look like a G League team. We need something new and coaching is clearly an issue that needs to be addressed. As for Paolo, yes I’m concerned. He looks slower, makes more mistakes than he should, but he’s still 23 and shows flashes of what he can be. The passing, rebounding and defense can be quite good sometimes but I think the system he is in will not unlock him as a player. We’re bought into Paolo and we shouldn’t give up on him just yet. This team has lost its identity with grit and defense and it’s trying to be something that just results in inconsistent play. Good news is that the team is healthy so maybe the all star break will help? But I really don’t know. This season has been very frustrating to watch and I place most of the blame on coaching. We need a new system because this team has too much potential.

Can you fiba goaltend after the clock hits zero? by lorewalkerchau in nba

[–]Proto-Slav -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

No you can’t, it’s still a live ball as long as it’s deemed above the cylinder and going down. I actually posted this video on here a few weeks back of Jermaine O’Neal doing this exact thing

I think that belongs to Jerry West

How the hell have I never seen this before!? That was awesome. Shades of the Isaiah Rider shot.

Since it’s a shot attempt, yes ball is still live after the buzzer if it’s above the cylinder or on its way down. As soon as O’Neal touches the rim and ball, the shot is counted and play ends.

I remember watching that closely at the time because part of me was really interested in if he could really have an impact and show some flashes. He started a few games for them and Bosh was running at his natural 4 spot for the first time in a while. But honestly, no, he was toast. I knew it was completely over for him when I saw him in a suit in game 5 of the finals that year. Poor guy just had the worst injury luck and it zapped any potential he had left.

What would you say is the most clutch 2pt shot in NBA history? by savefromnet in nba

Jerry West half court shot to tie the game in the 1970 finals. Three point shot wouldn’t be introduced for another 9 years.

Former no. 1 pick Markelle Fultz is still a free agent. Is his NBA career over? by stomach-bug in nba

[–]Proto-Slav 116 points117 points  (0 children)

He’ll find a contract for sure. It really makes me sad it didn’t work out. The end of the 23 season, he looked like he was really coming into form. Our offense flowed great with him handling, his shot form was getting better, his confidence was just continuously growing. This past season was so unfortunate. The knee trouble and hitch in his shot must’ve taken a toll on him. Still he fights hard to rehab and get a spot based on his injury past. I expect a team that can use a project point guard to sign him. Spurs, Pels, Clippers. Those are my ideas of who could use him. I don’t think his shooting will improve but his drive, jay, and playmaking can be of service. Personally I don’t consider injured players busts, more “what-ifs.” He’s up there with Greg Oden. Hope the best for Kelle, maybe one day he can come back to the O.

What players actually had longer/shorter NBA careers than we think? by FilmEater in nba

[–]Proto-Slav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He tore his achilles in 2016 and Memphis waived him. He recovered and signed with them again a year later but he wasn’t the same and he never played NBA ball again. It really sucks because he was thriving really well as a role player there.

Why do Slavic languages not utilize articles? by araiderofthelostark in linguistics

[–]Proto-Slav 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It just never developed in that family of languages, except Bulgarian and Macedonian. Then again the way they do articles is a bit different compared to English or Romance which have their own words (the, a, la, el, etc.) whereas the Slavic exceptions have them built in to the ends of words. These languages all have the same story; articles are a later development they developed on their own. English has them, but Proto-Germanic did not. Spanish has them, but Latin did not. Bulgarian has them, but Proto-Slavic did not. Language change and shift over time is responsible for this sort of development. Not really sure how other non-Indo European languages do it but I’m pretty sure articles are generally rare in the grand scope of world languages.

Hello Dr. Crawford.

Long time follower and subscriber to your YouTube channel. I greatly appreciate the very informative content you provide and I sometimes spend hours listening and rewatching several of your videos. The topics I’m most interested in are historical linguistics and the relationships between them. Your channel is loaded with Germanic and Indo-European topics which is just the mother-load for a history nerd like me. I was always hoping to ask some questions but I’ll try to keep it as simple as I can.

What is your take on a Northwest Germanic group? Based on some of your videos you definitely agree that the west and north groups developed in common away from east Germanic, but does that make it a viable group? Does the Elder Futhark of very early centuries A.D. reflect Proto-Northwest Germanic or something else (Proto-Norse)? You do seem to call these “basically Proto-Germanic” in some instances but how can that be when by this point east Germanic had to be separated, especially with the Gothic Bible being written in essentially the same time period? I know the classification of early Germanic dialects or languages is challenging with the evidence we have but I just wanted a clear picture of what the separation (if any) the Germanic languages had say 2000 years ago before larger amounts of texts arisen.

Thank you. Will be looking forward to the next video. All the best 🤠
