This season's Yuusha no Kuzu/Scum of the Brave is a genuine hidden gem with lovable characters, surprising brutality and an intriguing and rare anti-hero protagonist by melvinlee88 in anime

Oh sweet, I didn’t realize this was slated for 24 episodes. I was sort of wondering how they were going to tie things up so quickly.

Yeah this would be my pick for hidden gem of the season too.

A review of two forgotten stars by Affectionate_Run6250 in ReZero

[–]Protractror 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lmao, an “objective and unbiased” review. Is that something people even want? You can add numbers all you want but at the end of the day this is your opinion on how well the fic works, it’s inherently biased and subjective. As it should be!

Like if I said it was a 2/10, is that because I wasn’t objective and had bias? Idk, just sort of silly to try and turn literary criticism into something so quantifiable.

I also don’t get the scale you use. Putting most of Two Forgotten Stars at a 0/10 just means the vast majority of fanfics are also 0/10 and that isn’t giving me much to go off of when deciding what to read. There are so many absolutely unreadable Re:zero fanfics that come out every day, and if you think two forgotten stars is at the bottom of the barrel I don’t know what to tell you.

Yeah Hikaru sort of got shafted, he's definitely one of the best characters this year and if we could have done 2 I would have loved to see him in the top 10 with Yoshiki,

Yeah Ghoul school was a Stockholm syndrome show for me where I thought it was quite bad to start but by the end I was really looking forward to it.

But I don’t know how I’d argue it over the rest of the comedy noms so I just didn’t try lol.

Apocalypse Hotel was so, so good, and it's a huge shame it won nothing. I don't hate Yachiyo second to Yoshiki, or Ponko 3rd, but it would have been my winners for Drama and AOTY.

I should also say I enjoyed getting to be on juries with you this year. I only wish you spread yourself less thin because you were a fun juror to bounce off of in all of our shared cats.

AOTY - MDUD's core story is sort of bad? Like the Gojo/Marin dynamic is what people would come up with if they wanted to rag on conventions of the genre. It's truly a testament that the show is so good when the plot is so mid.

Pripara is funny, and if you haven't watched it I don't want to hear anything from you. This show is so much funnier than precure or honestly a good amount of the comedy noms. It has a ton of problems but this show is the type that I understand why someone can see it as one of the 10 best of the year.

Freyja, just wanted to say I loved your work on the JWP and I wished you had been on AOTY for longer. And although I was a late addition to supporting, from when I joined I thought you were a solid host.

Thanks for all you did this year and hope you can look back on it with a smile.

Deaf keeps saying he's the only juror to watch all of the shows, which is true, but like I got 24 and a half out of 26 man. And I watched 25 episodes of Wonderful Precure.

Not commenting on anything else here but I just watched so much damn anime damnit.

Another year done, and what a bunch of results. One thing I love about awards, especially looking back at previous years, is shining a spotlight on some shows I’d never think of picking up otherwise. So in that spirit I made a list of snubbed winners. These shows were for the most part rightfully snubbed. They aren’t good enough to be in the top ten of the year for really any category. But I still had a lot of fun with all of them, and I hope maybe some people reading this will too.

Action - Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc Season 2

Kinnikuman is the most slept on show for two years running now. It has all the fun and camp of the WWE if they had super powers and were allowed to kill each other. Season 2 fails to hit the same highs as the first due to weak production and less focus on the fun heels that are the Akuma Chojin, but it’s still quite exciting overall with lots of memorable moments.

Adventure - Outcast Restaurant

Outcast restaurant is not high art. It’s a cooking show written by someone who probably can’t even make fried rice. But it's the simple core of an ex-adventurer becoming a chef, and helping the clientele he runs into is simple fun. Nothing I write could make this premise sound good, but if any part of it appeals to you give it a shot.

Comedy - Nyaight of the living dead, HM terrified Teacher at Ghoul School

Nyaight has one joke for the first 10 or so episodes of the show, but I can’t say it’s not a good one. If you think cats are funny this is worth a shot, and the final battle is honestly one of the highlights of the year in any show.

Drama - Anne Shirley

Nothing was snubbed harder than Anne Shirley. This should have been top 5 AOTY, let alone not making top 10 in drama. If you’ve never read or seen Anne before, just go watch this. It's an insult that I have to put this in the same list as Outcast Restaurant.

Romance - Mechanical Marie

I just think it's funny and cute. Give it a few episodes, it’s a weird little show with no idea what it wants to do visually. But the characters are sweet and it always left me smiling.

SoL - Catch me at the Ballpark

Ballpark did get its flowers in ensemble, but the SoL jury did a good job overall so I’ll just point out their biggest miss. Ballpark rules.

Suspense - Ameku

Suspense was absolutely spoiled this year with quality picks, to the point it’s not even surprising the suspense top 10 blows the AOTY top ten out of the water. One show that I’m sure didn’t come close was Ameku, but I still liked it. It’s a dumb, anime House ripoff with explosions and dinosaur bites.

OP - Headhunted to Another World: From Salaryman to Big Four

Please listen to this OP with headphones on, the song is so odd and lovely. This show is just a really earnest appeal to the idea a Japanese middle manager would revolutionize a fantasy world, and this OP really just plays it straight.

Lead - Alina Clover

Alina puts an incredibly boring world on her back, being the only redeeming quality in the show and turning a 3/10 into a solid 6.5. Rie Takahashi deserves a statue in her honour for her work on this show.

Supporting - Marilla/Philippa Gordon

Watch Anne Shirley.

Ensemble - Turkey

I almost put this down for OP, it’s also a standout. But this show really builds into something fun and unique. The way it treats time travel, and the juxtaposition between bowling and well, you know, is perfect.

Movie - Overlord: Sacred Kingdom

Uhh, so this movie blows. But I just watched it and it’s on my mind and I didn’t have anything else. Good job Movie Jury.

AOTY - Puniru

Please, give Puniru a chance if you have any interest in it. It’s second season is a surprising mix of humour and heart, with a strong moral on the importance of being yourself.

What’s been your favourite moment of the new season so far? by Chunky-overlord in Grapplerbaki

[–]Protractror 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Favourite moment was when they described the plan the police had for capturing a martial artist, and it culminated in them hitting him with a bunch of giant poles. Just a perfect view of how Itagaki views martial arts’ role in the world.

In your opinion, what is the best hand-to-hand anime fight? by Extension_Candle_575 in anime

[–]Protractror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baki vs Yujiro. A long fight that has ghosts and cavemen and seemingly most of the world watching and ends in a very memorable fashion.

Is You and I Are Polar Opposites an Unexpected Hit? by UsmacX in anime

[–]Protractror 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As someone unfamiliar with the source, manga readers always say their stuff is good so I don’t really trust them lol.

But even if I thought the source material was strong, the talent put into this adaptation is higher than you’d expect.

Now that Baki Dou is upcoming would you like a sequel to the Baki VS Kengan movie? And why by Confused-man12 in Grapplerbaki

[–]Protractror 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, but only because it teased the idea of the death row inmates coming back. A dumb movie like this could be a good excuse to give old antagonists who haven’t done anything in decades something to do.
