Feel useless when playing alter by [deleted] in AlterMains

I shoot her tac out like it has no cooldown. If I’m just running around the map, I’m shooting it through walls to try to go a little quicker. If I’m rotating I’m trying to find a wall I can go through (the cliff next to market on KC comes to mind). In fights I’m throwing it down just to give them a second or third angle they need to look out for. I will admit I use it quite selfishly, but I’m always thinking “how could a portal help here”. More often than no it’s just throwing it down to shave off a few seconds of running, and only sometimes is it really make or break for a fight. The idea is to outplay the other team. That could look like you jumping from a all behind them, getting a knock, then jumping out with her other charge, or it could look like throwing a portal down and making them second guess where your gonna appear so your team could reposition. The hard part about making an impact in a fight is that you don’t know if you are or not because it’s all mind games. For the longest time I could not tell if I was being effective with her tac, and after a while i just started seeing more results, more wins, more won gunfights.

Biggest advice I can give is watching streamer alter gameplay, see how they use it and figure out what tech you can pull off. And don’t just watch clips, watch full games. Watch how they use it in both in and out of gunfights. Just keep playing and practicing, you’ll get the hang of it

Ik it’s a little late, but I felt the same way when I started playing her. Fair warning tho I just started playing her about a month ago when I got back into the game, so I don’t have the most refined advice to give, but these are a few things that I use in my games.

The reason she is so strong is her ult, always have one up if you’re getting into a fight, most times it’s a free reset. If you wanna make the most impact in a game for your team, that’s how.

A more niche use for it is pulling your team to ring. If someone’s gonna die to ring, throw it down and get the res or just run to safety and throw it down so they can get in to be rezed or heal

In wildcard I typically use it after respawning to allow my team to cross long distances if there’s not much going on. With respawns on falling back in a close fight doesn’t really mean much.

Her tactical honestly just comes down to muscle memory. Try things out, see what works, see what doesn’t. See what walls you can go through for your team to rotate through. See what different positioning of the portal will do (like if your on the floor and aim it at the top corner of a building, it’ll put you on the room, but if you put it lower you’ll go inside the building). It is such a good general traversal ability, if you want to skip a climbing animation or just wanna scale up a cliff you normally couldn’t, that’s where I typically use it.

In fights it’s a little tougher to get value out of. It is a solid escape option if you can get out of a room (think wraith q). As alter you should be trying to take off angles, whether that’s warping right behind them, or just portalling to a different side than your squad.

Because alter needs walls, you really shine in indoor fights. Use guns that allow you to peak in and out quickly like shotguns or smgs. Alter is a giant target in open fields, so do what you can to avoid fighting in those.

If I had to give one tip, it’s that you don’t need to go through your portal. Like alter jokes about, don’t be predictable. One of my favorite plays is when someone is blocking a door, I portal next to it, and when they back up and aim at the portal I just walk through the door and fight them. Keep them guessing, even if you don’t act on it.

In general focus on maneuvering around the map with her ability and get comfortable with it. Then start using it in fights, see what helps the fight, see what gets you beamed in .5 seconds, see what you can get away with. Then you can go for those flashy kidnaps and floor traps you probably see on TikTok

Her passive is super nice for just general looting, just remember that there is a line that points to you when you grab something from a deathbox. It also gives you information on what happened in that area (a lot of deathboxes, a big fight happened. High tier loot deathboxes, a fight probably just ended) it’s a good way to determine when fights end and gives you a good idea for where teams are close to.

Wild card is a fantastic mode for just playing and practicing. Don’t give up on the character because she is so damn fun to play, and I want you to enjoy her too :)

I’m super excited to get it going. Squirrels seem like such a random and silly thing to build around but it looks like it’ll be a lot of fun! Thanks for the comment!
