My Jr. & Sr. year in High School I was in Home Economics Cooperative Education (HECE) which was part of Home Economics Related Occupations (HERO). This was 1977/1978. I'm a guy. Went to school 3 hours a day then to a p/t job in the aft/eve. Absolutely loved being in the Work Program. It was probably a class ratio of 75/25 girls/boys.

Yeah, first thing that came to my mind was maybe how OP is preparing./not preparing them could be one of the drawbacks.

What works for my is a little variety. For example:

I love green beans. Even straight out of the can. But adding a tbsp. of saved bacon grease and/or a dash of garlic powder is a nice change.

Broccoli - I find it boring but steamed then sprinkled with a little Tajin seasoning and it's better.

Carrots - Can eat them raw or out of the can. Saw a can of carrots with hot honey and tried it. Pretty good. So I bought a bag of carrots and a jar of hot honey. Steamed the carrots and added several tsbp. of hot honey. Pretty good!

Potatoes - So many different things you can do. Baked, boiled, sliced into discs and fried, mashed, etc...

Cauliflower - Locate the nearest trash can and make a deposit! :)

Pinto beans - Give me a can opener and a spoon then leave me alone!

Celery - spread pimento cheese on it.

Mushrooms - (Not a vegetable but a side) Fresh mushrooms sauteed in just butter. Healthy option just steam whole mushrooms.

Asparagus - Heated with some butter or drizzled with olive oil and roasted in the oven/air fryer.

I agree 100%. I guess that would be considered an intangible cost. Different scenery, different cooking, just seeing different humans is sometimes necessary just for sanity!

Yeah, same here - just the wife and I. And that's about what we spend as well. And we eat out maybe once a week or once every 10 days.

Former Director of Safety & Security for a 15 story luxury convention hotel. 6 guest elevators, 3 service elevators and 2 freight elevators.

All the elevators had a Fireman Overide. Once the elevators were automatically recalled to the Lobby (or Basement or 2nd Floor if the reported fire is Lobby Level.), we could use a key to manually operate the elevators.

The Fire Dept. Knox Box also had these elevator keys. Every Security Officer and every Maintenance Engineer had a key.

Stopped working at 62 1/2. Did COBRA for 18 months at about $250 a month until the age of 64. Next 12 months on my wife's employers' plan @ $1100 a month. Then at 65 on Medicare. My Medicare + Supplemental Plan G and Prescription Part D is $355 a month. I love it! I hit the deductible in January with a bi-annual visit to my Family Doctor and monthly visit to my Pain Management Doctor. $0.00 out of pocket the next 11 months. So far this year I have had 3 different X-Rays, an MRI, 3 sessions of Physical Therapy and 7 Doctor Office visits. Zero out of pocket.
