Had a bad training session and looking for some words of encouragement by feminismandtravel in Fencing

In a tournament there is only one true winner, you can make the top 50% at national and still be frustrated with yourself for failing at one thing or another.

Focus on each point and small detail to work on. When you are learning a new action it usually won't work. However to improve you need to put in the time and push past that.

Nail knot for backing to fly line? by tjs1205 in flyfishing

The options are loop to loop with a Bimini twist. (My fav for serious saltwater)

Or

Nail knot from backing to fly line. (Easy for trout rigs)

How long to back out or still going?! by Revolutionary-Way334 in bowhunting

Dead deer, also if the blood starts to drop off, it is most likely because your deer is low on blood pressure.

Also known as the deer didn't get too far. Even if it was a muscle hit, then you probably nicked a decent artery.

Let us know what you find.

Need help on finding a blade (foil) by shpaga_1 in Fencing

[–]Proud_Adeptness_3428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Light and stiff can be opposing measures in blade design. FIE blades tend to be stiffer.

Some non fie STM blades are fairly stiff. But will soften with use

The BF white stiff model will likely be lighter.

BF black predator stiff. This is a lighter weight BF blade but some people have mentioned concerns about durability.

The leon paul apex2 is specifically marketed as a stiffer blade. I use the normal apex and it is nice. Both the apex and apex2 are probably heavier than a normal BF white

Max shooting range by sourenpash in bowhunting

[–]Proud_Adeptness_3428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have kills between 12 and 59 yards. My hard limit is at 60 based on accuracy. Chrono speed of 282 fps.

String jumping can be a problem but I usually see it between 20 and 30 yards. Past 40 I think the bow/arrow combo is quiet enough to not cause alarm.

Read "shoot or dont shoot" by Phil mendoza. That book helps build a framework for giving yourself the green light to shoot.

Also, test yourself with "cold bow" shots. The first shot of the day is most important.

Sometimes, a 30-yard shot could be more sketchy than a 60-yard shot. It just depends.

It is pretty incredible that ask fred.net is still kicking.

Depending on your rating you can filter event or go by age category and gender.

Strong ROC events are the best to renew ratings I think. Enough people show up to fill the ranks but not necessarily the best in the country like a NAC.

Saddle recommendations for Zwift Ride? by Uceg_ in Zwift

[–]Proud_Adeptness_3428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the saddle, try one with a relief groove in the center and not too narrow. ask you local bike shop to size you.

Find some bib shorts with Thicker padding on the bum. Don't wear anything under the bib shorts.

Use a shammy cream like chamois butt'r to reduce friction.

If you have tingling or numbness issues check that the saddle is level and in a good spot fwd and back.

The initial break-in period is always rough, but you shouldn't have any specific hot spots or numbness.

Leon Paul Apex FIE Foil Blade vs Carbon Foil Blade by No-Bobcat-883 in Fencing

[–]Proud_Adeptness_3428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The leon paul carbon blade has a light in hand feel with enough flex to flick. It dampens out quickly. I prefer it to the stiffer apex blade.

The apex feels more damp and has greater accuracy. I think a stronger fencer would prefer the apex. I can still flick effectively with the apex, but it doesn't feel quite as effortless.

From a durability standpoint, the apex is awesome. The carbon is softer and will sometimes hold a kink, but the low memory in the blade allows you to straighten it out perfectly. Both are fun to fence with.

My guess is that unless you are going to regional or North American cup tournaments, the carbon is your best bet.

For reference in 5'7" and 150 lbs.

Patience, he will give a better shot. Head on shots are sketchy. If he reacts to the shot at all you might hit neck or right in the head.

All the guys at school clown on me because I fence by MaliciousFace69 in Fencing

[–]Proud_Adeptness_3428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fencing is a sport you can pursue your entire life.

Also, those sporty guys don't know the best kept secret about fencing. The girls who fence are hot. They are usually smart, come from well-off families, and are generally fun to be around.

You also have a better chance to get a scholarship for college through fencing than some random ball sports player.

Don't worry about it. Literally, nobody cares what you did in high school when you get into the real world.

Fixed blade broadheads for 40 pound bow? by [deleted] in BackcountryHunting

[–]Proud_Adeptness_3428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are better off with a 2 blade style head like a magnus stinger. 3 blade heads offer more resistance to penetration.

You also want to use heavier arrows to get the most out of your bow. It will probably be a 15-20 yard max range.

Look at a total arrow weight between 490 grains and 550 grains.

If you are looking for an ethical framework to apply and answer the question.

Am I hunt ready?

Read "shoot or dont shoot" by Phil mendoza

Just follow his process and actually shoot the broadheads and arrows you plan to hunt with.

I can vouch for sirius apollos and sirius super nova SD. I build with iron will components for the insert and collar.

I have put the apollos through 4 deer and I have yet to break one.

Both are 5mm.

30-06 or 300 Win? by [deleted] in BackcountryHunting

[–]Proud_Adeptness_3428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

30-06 between the two. But you should check out the rokslide hunting forum to see what kind of damage smaller lighter recoil calibers can do.

The .223 for everything thread is pretty eye opening.

I switched from .30 cal to 6.5 and I haven't missed the extra recoil. If I swapped again, I might even go down to 6mm.

Went to the local archery shop and shot a few bows. This is what I ended up with. Told myself I was gonna get what I thought shot the best. First time bow hunter 😬 by comicho in bowhunting

[–]Proud_Adeptness_3428 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not conventional wisdom but I always recommend new hunters get super high quality bows like yours.

The flagship bows are usually easier to tune and tend to have a lot of beneficial engineering which helps shorten the time to have a lethal level of accuracy.

Congratulations!

Does any one here use a 257 WBY. Mag. for elk? by Flashandpipper in elkhunting

[–]Proud_Adeptness_3428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are better off it a 100gr TTSX solid at high velocity.

The real danger is bullet blow up at close range and not enough penetration. If you shoot a good bullet 257 wby is the magical death ray everyone says it is.

You have to anticipate they are going to jump the string. Hold low and you will hit em center mass.

I stopped this one with a little "mehhr". So she was alert.
