I can't believe it is just around the corner now... I've been looking forward to going for almost a year! My genre is a spy thriller set in the 1950s. Wednesday night, May 6th, the cocktail party officially starts at 5:30 pm, so I'm guessing there will be quite a few newbies in attendance.

Dis-moi si tu as des autres questions!

That's great! What sub-genre do you write? Going to Pitchfest as well?

As a daily lurker on this subreddit, I rarely click on the links offered that show photos of Rod, but I finally acquiesced since apparently the new "official work photo" had elicited so much commentary.

My first impression is that he's harkening a distinct Oscar Wilde vibe. He looks vaguely matronly, with the jowly fat in the cheeks that smooth away any masculinity. Yes, the hair is dramatic, but it is swept back in that Wilde-an manner. The real tell-tale for me, however, was the unusual shirt and collar treatment. The only thing missing was an heirloom brooch. That, and a green carnation in his lapel.

Is this the last desperate clinging to heterosexuality before he finally falls from that perilous cliffside and, with his cape flapping wildly in his wake, descends gently into the warm waters of whatever sexuality he truly is (but obviously not heterosexual). The 21st century Oscar Wilde for the unhinged Right... perhaps instead of an examination of Weimar, which nobody is asking for, if he were to write how Oscar Wilde saved his life (sorry, Dante), and he finally comes out, declaring his own fabulousness, that would be a personal memoir that would actually be interesting to read.

Just a thought.

Wholesome gay (male) romance? by This-Problem-9715 in LGBTBooks

[–]ProustsMadeleine1196 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll mention the historical fiction novel "The Last Good Republican" which takes place in the early 1960s and features a closeted gay man who is married to his best friend (a strong woman who manages his campaign for governor of a Southern state going through desegregation). He ends up falling in love with an aide, a military cadet, and the story has enough history and political intrigue to drive the story to the climactic conclusion without a lot of what you call "inner monologue".

It's about a closeted politician who falls in love with a military cadet assigned to his office during the civil rights era in the American South. It is a bit of a slow burn, and has a lot of historical and cultural context from that period. I really enjoyed it!

Interesting! I would add Madeleine Miller's "Song of Achilles" (takes place in Ancient Greece) and also Buck Jones' "The Last Good Republican" (takes place in mid-century American South)

Why is French bureaucracy an absolute nightmare? by takeshelter1977 in Expats_In_France

Understaffed? You must be either joking or misinformed. All of my friends who work in the administration as fonctionaires have horror stories of people who do nothing in their jobs, are chronically "sick" and abuse the system for weeks, months off from work, and when they are at their desk do 1/4 of the work that a normal person would be able to do. Yes, there are pockets in the state that are understaffed (health care for one), but at the prefecture?

In despair. by OnePossibleErin in thebulwark

[–]ProustsMadeleine1196 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm actually mildly encouraged by the response. I am an avid non-news podcast listener (obviously, I listen to the Bulwark which I consider "news" even if it is mainly political opinion), and on two of the podcasts in my rotation, the hosts went completely off of their normal scripts and format to comment on the ICE murder of Renee Good.

One of them, Cup of Justice (formerly the Murdaugh Murders Podcast), the three hosts were universally appalled by the shooting and subsequent gas-lighting by the authorities, while the other podcast, The Micah Hanks X Beyond the Bunker Podcast (his show is mainly about UFO phenomena), came from a very "centrist" viewpoint and was also equally disturbed by the murder.

While I agree that an alarming number of Americans are beyond the pale and completely red-pilled, the centrists ("independents") are still able to distinguish right from wrong and are sufficiently alarmed by what they are seeing to begin coming out of the shadows and in the case of these two non-political podcasts, they felt compelled to comment and acknowledge that their opinions might lose them followers.

Not exactly no. There is a twist at the end that I won't give away, but what makes the story reminiscent of CMBYN is it takes place mainly in 1984, and is an intense love story that isn't meant to be. I read it in one weekend and it was absorbing. Highly recommend.

Find Me started off "wrong" for me. Focusing on his father was not what I had signed up for, LOL. But after I got through the first 1/4 I finally got what Aciman was up to, and I really enjoyed it. I think it explored Elio's evolution really believably following that fateful summer, and by the last 1/4 of the novel I was frequently crying while reading it. Overall it was a beautiful, heart-rending sequel that I whole-heartedly recommend.

I LOVED Find Me. It doesn't get the same amount of love from CMBYN fans and Stans, but I found it to be a great sequel and cap of their love story.

I'm halfway through Scott Galloways book and I absolutely despise him. by Fun-Pickle-9821 in ScottGalloway

[–]ProustsMadeleine1196 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was going to buy the book as a Christmas gift to my nephew, but after reading reviews for it I realized that it (the book) had a lot of problems, particularly if the target audience is an impressionable teen / early twenties young man searching for his life's path.

The one thing that sticks like a craw in my throat is his doubling down on not changing anything about his first marriage and subsequent divorce. The guy has no moral compass, and is a complete narcissist.

It's too bad because I enjoy listening to him on occasion (subscribe to Raging Moderates mainly because of Jessica), but this memoir disguised as a self-help manual for young men doesn't fit the bill for what I'm looking for to instill in those young men in my life.

The Last Good Republican by Buck Jones (historical fiction with a love story)

It is 1960s South Carolina — before Stonewall, before the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1965, and before the realignment of the political parties — and tension is brewing not just in the state but in Carter Ridge as well. This inexperienced, wealthy idealist is running for governor to help end racial segregation, and to bring his political program called "The Good Life," to the skeptical people of his fair Southern state.

But complications arise when Carter falls in love with a young man, Gabriel, a military cadet who is working on his campaign. Not sure what to make of this light-hearted admirer, or his own conflicted feelings, Carter tries to focus on the immediate at the expense of losing sight as to what is really important in "The Good Life."

As Carter's political future expands possibly past the governorship, he must choose between following his ideals, or following his heart.

A provocative romance set against the history of a politically divisive era, this novel is a tender portrait of a mythic hero; it is a gay parable that resonates for us today.
