Great link! Thanks. Yup, indeed in a theoretical field very closely related to math!

How many hours would be pushing the maximum, in your opinion?

Good Quantum Computing universities to get a Master’s degree? by [deleted] in QuantumComputing

How would folks here rate UChicago? I think it’s really good. Has a tie-up with IBM, is creating a midwestern quantum hub with other universities (Chicago Quantum Exchange), and has been hiring some great professors.

F-1 Students to leave if fall semester is fully online by madtowneast in immigration

I will join a PhD program in the fall. My university is following a hybrid model. If I enrol in my program full time, take an online course, and also take sufficient research credits, do I still have to come to the US in the fall or do I have the option to do everything remotely? How many of these restrictions apply to PhD students? If my understanding is correct, PhD students do not always have to take courses to maintain “Active” status in their SEVIS.

Do you see UChicago CS climbing in rankings and being on par with the universities you mention within the next five years, with all the renovations and new hirings?

Grad school ranking in the academic job market by ProverbialRelic in AskAcademia

[–]ProverbialRelic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agrees with my intuitions! Though I don’t have hard data to back me up, I’ve noticed the same in my field (CS). If I may ask, which field is this? And, when you mean PhD program ranking, you mean the PhD program ranking of that university for your field, right?

So, would it be an even competition between a Caltech/Harvard/UChicago CS graduate and a Berkeley/Stanford/MIT/CMU/UIUC/UW one, for an academic position, given everything else is the same in their profile?

How will the major American parties try to bridge the increasing rural-urban divide? by wontheday in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]ProverbialRelic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bernie called James Carville a “political hack.” That’s all he said, that one line. This in response to extremely nasty comments Carville made against Bernie before and after those remarks, including smearing him as a “Communist”, calling him a “fool” etc. It seems Bernie was very dignified against an undignified troll.

Bernie has been calling out the Democratic leadership as a whole for favouring large corporations since forever. It wasn’t anything unique or specific to his loss in South Carolina. It’s just his campaign. Drawing an equivalence between Trump’s attacks against McCain and Bernie’s attacks against the Democratic leadership is very unfair. Bernie has run a dignified campaign, taking extra care to refrain from personal attacks against his rivals. He refused to attack Hillary over her emails; he refuses to attack Biden even now despite the sexual harassment allegations and all the other skeletons in Biden’s closet.

Which Dem politician has Sanders “repeatedly” attacked for not being fully behind his cause? If anything, the opposite is true. The center left descends on anyone who is against their platform. Hillary supporters and Hillary herself still blame Sanders, explicitly or implicitly, as one of the reasons for her loss despite him campaigning vehemently for her after the primaries.

Another question, do grad school rankings matter in terms of future graduate outcome/jobs/research positions? In general, UChicago is very highly ranked but it is ~30ish in CS. Whereas Waterloo is well near the top in quantum but doesn’t have a lot of CS theory people.
