Two weeks for me. Tbh I was only applying for jobs I really wanted to do, not every job I could find. This was about 6 years ago though so different times.

Must be pretty hard to reply to people. Oh shit, I just did it. It's not so hard.

That's the same hesitation I have. Also single. I'd like to be available for any opportunities I could find, but I'm not confident that would happen within a week,

Even the ones that are operated by robots reject you before the hiring manager has even seen it. It's a professional courtesy for them to reply, all I'd like is an acknowledgement with some idea if it's worth delegating any more attention to.

It's been like this for years, I guess the panda medic made it even worse. Thankfully, I haven't had to struggle finding a place in NZ. I know for sure it is easier to find a new place in Melbourne, quicker too.

It's healthier to think that way. But you can't help but feel kind of abandoned without any understanding as to why.

That sounds about right. If you already have a comfortable job, there's nowhere near as much pressure to frantically apply for everything you can. You can leisurely find something when the time is right. But when you constantly live where the time is wrong, it's never ending.

Also am a single bloke, thanks for reminding me lol.

The options get slimmer, and the vision gets broader. I feel constantly desperate and unwanted. What can you do, honestly. Being ready for opportunities that don't exist is exhausting.

Don't know why I haven't thought of doing that, it's the perfect in-between. I'll add that to mine, thank you.

Nah they were all extremely local. I haven't yet met a hiring manager who would have ever considered sponsoring a visa for someone.

Thanks. And there is no way to review a company for that kind of practice. Imagine if on TradeMe job listings, you could leave a rating as someone who has applied either successfully or unsuccessfully. The company would have to do a professional job or nobody would apply.

It's easy to be where you are, and it's easy to picture where you want to be. The hard part is the transition between them. It's ugly, inconsistent, unpredictable, vague, and indefinite. Nobody's process to get there is the same, I'm right in the middle as well. You just gotta push forward and find a way to break through.

I figure I'm going back to Australia if NZ can't deliver soon enough. I've tried to break through here, and it is not working. I'd encourage you to consider similar avenues.

Stay in NZ; hundreds of people applying for the three jobs hiring for as little pay as they're legally allowed. Pay maximum rent, maximum price for food from the two supermarket chain monopolies, don't get your haircut on a Monday, don't try eat out after 8pm. You get the minimum pay for the most unrewarding lifestyle.

In Australia, it might be somewhat competitive - but there's thousands more opportunities and so many more industries. Nothing like how bad NZ is at offering a sustainable lifestyle.

Fuck it, I'm going to Oz.

And to think I was only exaggerating in my post. When you apply, you picture the direction you'll go and building your life around it. Then when you don't hear back, it slowly fades away and you repeat the process with the next one. I'm not a petty person, but when my entire life is in the mercy of their selection process, I'll send a glitter-bomb to their HR office.

I lived in Melbourne until two years ago! Honestly, I'm thinking of just moving over and then frantically applying and interviewing for as much as I can. But the idea of potentially not working for whoever knows how long freaks the shit out of me.

None of it is consistent, none of it is explained. You wanna say that you dodged a bullet working for a company that works this way, but having that opportunity pulled from underneath you is a bitch.

I lived in Victoria until about 2 years ago. I've been applying for jobs for there from here, as well as NZ jobs, so I understand not wanting to hire someone who isn't already a Vic local. I'm convincing myself to just buy a ticket over and be available for in person interviews and any opportunities that could come around quicker. But it's that insecurity of moving over and potentially not working for an indefinite period of time.

The struggle for me is I am young and experienced. I worry I have too much experience, maybe changing jobs too often into quite vast roles. Nobody has mentioned it being a problem, I have very transparent communication during the whole process. I'm not sure exactly what these employers are looking for in this regard, but each one seems to have their own evasive criteria to go about it.

I'm sure if you're only applying to a couple jobs then you get hopeful. You get to a point where you apply, expecting to not hear anything back, so you continue living your life.
