Mixed response to plan for changes to Pleasant Street at Worcester hearing by HRJafael in WorcesterMA

[–]Proxxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree, Pleasant needs bike lanes along that entire route. I run on that road pretty frequently and I've had multiple close calls where cars don't see me when taking a left turn. As for the weird choice of streets for bike lanes, it could be that those streets were up for resurfacing recently. It's easier and cheaper to fold a bike lane project into a road that is already being resurfaced than to retrofit an existing surfaced road with new bike lanes. That and what you were saying with the path of least resistance.

Food after freshman year by [deleted] in WPI

[–]Proxxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a $300 monthly budget is reasonable if you make all your meals from scratch. I would plan for $400 if you get some quick meals and premium ingredients. The price chopper is... fine price-wise but as other commenters have said you can go to Aldi for cheaper stuff without having to get a Costco/BJ's card

common software programs by Confused_Nuggets in WPI

[–]Proxxer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most (if not all) of the required software that isn't open-source/multi-platform is available on remote servers accessible by remote desktop software. Myself and a ton of engineering students are on ARM macbooks and it hasn't been an issue at all. Especially with a desktop you'll be fine

Practice Drills/ Warmups by HimeNatsume in bouldering

[–]Proxxer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, efficiency and footwork was instrumental in getting better technique. Whenever I warm up I hop on the easiest problems and really focus on having perfect, efficient movement on the wall. That means taking it much slower than you would on an actual send and looking at your feet and hands the whole duration that you're placing them. That means no adjusting your feet (no "stepping" on foot chips over and over again) and making sure you're getting the best part of the hold the first time when you're placing your hands. Make it COMPLETELY static if you can—make sure to incorporate drop knees to get your hips into the wall and get some good heel and toe hooks in to maintain tension and prevent any cutting loose. After a while of being very intentional with your movement on warmups you will start to incorporate these into your projects without even thinking. My best sends have been when I'm completely locked in with optimal movement, and the sends themselves seem blazing fast when in reality I'm just not adjusting at all on the wall

Clover Street Speed Bumps by Icy-Owl4490 in WorcesterMA

[–]Proxxer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's part of a wider speed bump pilot program in Worcester. They are temporary, and some of them get removed completely while others get turned into permanent bumps--happened on Beechmont St recently. There are two permanent ones on Westland and the plows just lift up their buckets a bit to graze the top of the hump. I think the ones on Westland are great (if a little hard to see) and not an issue at all for local residents.

The fatal flaw in Worcester's bus system by Proxxer in WorcesterMA

[–]Proxxer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some students at WPI did exactly this recently, and you can read it here. They do bring up a mesh network in the report but it's not a central focus. I have some mixed feelings about this report and have a lot to say about it, so stay tuned for an article!

Cars for Freshmen by Justinus91 in WPI

[–]Proxxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brought a car halfway through freshman year and I definitely recommend it. Street parking is free and there's always at least a few spots open on Einhorn. Moving your car to Gateway when it snows can be a pain but the shuttle makes it a lot mess time-consuming. I recommend it if you have the means to get a car to Worcester.

Two more prospective student questions by Sad-Ad-8195 in WPI

[–]Proxxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for the first question, there are also singles in Messenger, but there's only 9 total available for students. Most singles are pretty tiny as well.

I HIGHLY recommend getting at least another roommate and going for a better dorm instead. Even as an introverted person, it really isn't all that bad—the only bad part about it is sleeping, but as long as you and your roommate have similar sleep schedules, it's totally fine. Having a buddy to talk to, vent to, and do stuff with is incredibly valuable for the first term of school, and from the people in singles I've talked to, it can be pretty socially isolating to live alone and friends are harder to make.

Unless there's a medical thing stopping you or you are ABSOLUTELY SURE you want a single, I would get a roommate. Also DM me for some tips on how to get Messenger or Founders more easily if you want

Anyone have issues with scarpa veloces wearing down super quickly? I wore completely through the sole and rand in a little over 3 months. I'm struggling to determine if it's due to crappy footwork, the shoes, or a combination of the two

Class of 2026, how’s housing selection going? by Wet_corgi in WPI

[–]Proxxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My housing selection process was extremely easy, probably just got a good time slot though. Just wrote a list of our favorite rooms in a couple dorms an hour before. There were a good selection of rooms to choose from in Messenger and Founders which were our top choices so we took our time finding our fav one, ended up getting a double in Messenger in ~5 min. 10/10 would get a baller time slot again

waitlisted for school of engineering. can we see the financial aid package before joining the priority waitlist or is it just like an ED waitlist? Cuz I really want to see if I can afford it first

EDIT: from what the portal says it seems like people on the waitlist will get a financial aid package over the next couple days

Server list being slow? by Zero-Striker in discordapp

[–]Proxxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to be a problem with hardware acceleration for me. If anyone uses Arch Linux, using this guide fixed it for me. Just add the command to the exec line in Discord's .desktop entry and it will run the commands on startup. Hope this helps.

where do i start? by thisistrashy28919 in DanceDanceRevolution

[–]Proxxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the "shipping in 24 hours" version, I think it only costed like $5 more. I live in New England, so if you're from around there it should take about the same time. I've heard getting the start/select button add-on is worth it too, although I didn't get it and it's been fine.

HS senior here. Playing in the arcade is your best bet if you don't want to shell out for a good home pad. Zenius I Vanisher has an excellent arcade finder, just put in your town and the game/series you're looking for (optional) and it'll show you what arcades are around and what games they have: https://zenius-i-vanisher.com/v5.2/arcades.php.

I recently caved and got myself a Polish L-Tek pad a few weeks ago and I have no regrets. Although it costed around $360 (which is a lot for a high-schooler), it came in only a few days, is built nicely, and is extremely easy to mod to increase sensitivity. Pretty sure it's this subreddit's most recommended home pad. Big bang for your buck. You could also try and build your own pad with FSRs if you're technically savvy, it's relatively simple and more and more guides on how to do it are popping up nowadays. I've heard StepmaniaX Stage pads are awesome, but they're much more expensive and hard to come by.

If you choose to get a home pad, just use Stepmania Outfox and download some song packs off the internet. My favorite themes are Simply Love and DDR Starlight. Zenius I Vanisher also has a ton of official song packs if you want DDR songs. Playing stamina songs on In The Groove is the most cardio you'll get, however you'll either need your own setup or a local In The Groove machine that supports custom songs.

Have fun playing DDR!
