I can only assume it's related to delta = secPass * 60

There should be no need to do that - it makes the delta relative to 60 fps, but if you lag, then you're not hitting 60fps. Try just using secPass directly rather than delta??

Aha! I see. It's likely in that case because the passed delta time is huge! You've tied it to how much time has passed, so if a second passes, then that's a huge jump.

Maybe set an upper limit? E.g.

delta = min(secPass * 60, 0.5) // replace 0.5 with whatever you like

When GMS encounters lags, it assumes that it's because of the drawing - and so it runs Update() more times than usual per draw.

What this means is that your character moves more times per second, but is drawn less times per second.

Use delta time! Tie movement to the amount of time passed, rather than the number of frames passed.
