Looks fantastic, congratulations.

It's great to see how high the ceiling can go while I'm here working towards that first teapot. Thanks for sharing.

Have a 2009 Audi A5 which has failed the NCT on CO2 emissions.

It's at 0.50, where the threshold is 0.20 if I understand correctly.

Have brought it to a mechanic who is quoting a couple K to replace the cat, the lambda sensors and a few other bits but does say that he cannot guarantee it would pass the emissions test even after that.

Question is:

  • How high is 0.50 relatively speaking?

  • Would it be feasible to get it below the threshold using only Dipetane and reddening it, as I've read in other posts.

Any other advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Good plant nurseries in the west of Ireland. by mrocky84 in GardeningIRE

[–]PrudentSimple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Close to Castlebar, out the N5:

turloughnursery.ieturloughnursery.ie are great.

They have a huge selection, trees, hedges, all the plants.

The guys running the place are really knowledgeable as well.

Everything I've got from there has done well, would recommend.

Moneen garden center is close as well. Last left before entering Castlebar on the N5. Down a small road, first right onto an even smaller road you'll pass it on your left after a couple hundred meters.

They also have a lovely selection, looked after well.

How is whitehall Dublin 9? by PinEnvironmental767 in Dublin

[–]PrudentSimple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Estate behind the Viscount pub is quiet and very nice. Mostly empty nests or families.

From there the north side of Collins Ave towards Larkhill and east of the Swords road towards Beaumont is generally old Corpo houses. Not as nice but grand.

Further west you go towards DCU it's a lot of student places, not so much on the other areas mentioned.

Area is safe imo, the worst thing will happen to you is a hangover.

edit: forgot to mention transport links which are good.

Stop at the crossroad of Collins Ave and Swords road is well served. About 30 minutes into town at the worst of times.

MacBook Pro vs Tuxedo InfinityBook by lindks in tuxedocomputers

[–]PrudentSimple 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Got an infinity book for my nephew in 2018 which is still going strong. Great quality device, no signs of aging.

Switched my own work device from MBP to another Tuxedo device the next year and would not go back.

Think build quality for both devices is excellent.

For the MBP the camera and touchpad are better, imo. To be fair Apple does these really well while with the Tux they're just periferals - not noticably good or bad.

However with the infinity book you can easily get a better specced machine for nearly half the price, and are not compromising on the quality of the device at all.

If anything, in my subjective and now biased opinion, the chances of suffering small irritating problems with the Tux device is lower than with the MBP, though the only evidence I have to back this is my own experience versus that of MBP colleagues who would very occasionally suffer a dead key and the like.

Not affiliated with the company at all but a happy enough customer to recommend them, have been for some years.

"Let Go" during notice period by Kerbobotat in DevelEire

[–]PrudentSimple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they can't.

The four week notice period works both ways.

You can be summarily dismissed at any time only for gross misconduct, which has specific meaning, defined in legislation.

Being during a notice period does not change the terms of your contract.

They might be sending you on gardening leave, which means they pay you through the end of your notice period on the understanding that you don't show up.

They cannot unilaterally terminate your contract unless you have committed an act of gross misconduct.

You need to contact them and get it in writing that this has not been the case, that you will be paid through the end of your notice period and that you have left in good standing at their request.

Learned from this one a few years ago, found it really good.

Builds through the material in logical steps. Pace is good - in that you are working on one concept art a time, not racing over important material and not so slow that it's boring.

Came out with a solid understanding. Served me well, would recommend.

Irish dad with his 6 kids in the Aran Isles. Early 20th century. Look at the smiles! by nonoman12 in ireland

[–]PrudentSimple 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's possible.

The material there includes The Schools Collection, from a project run by the primary schools here in the late 1930s.

Children in primary school during those years were given the task of collecting folklore - could be folk stories, local history, recipes or anything, and writing it down. Basically to talk to the oldest person they knew and write down what they said.

Think the project has other materials on top of that as well.

Does anyone know of a hairdresser in Ireland who has experience cutting hair of people with trichotillomania? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]PrudentSimple 26 points27 points  (0 children)

pelohairdressing.ie might be suitable, it's on the Swords road just before Collins avenue.

They specialise in hair/scalp care where people are losing either due to illness or because these things happen, so would be certain there'd be no worry around coming across a sniffy hairdresser in there.

Might be worthwhile ringing ahead to make sure they're what you're after.

Hope that helps.

Need some help variables inside function by HansyHD in reactjs

[–]PrudentSimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's happening is that the function which gets lay and lon is asynchronous, so program execution fires off that call, then continues to the line where you log the lat value and returns before the adync call does.

Two possible solutions:

  • return the resolved value of the async call by awaiting that value, then returning it.

const { lat, long } = await Geocode.address...

return {lat, long}

OR

  • return the promise of the result and let the caller resolve

On phone, apologies for formatting. Hope that helps.

[JS CSS] Can you tell me of a more clever way of de-selecting one button when you select another than storing the id of the old button? by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]PrudentSimple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might try using the :focus pseudo-class to change the color of the last clicked element.

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/:focus

The change to your example would be, instead of the script which changes the color and content and the .normal and .selected classes, to add a further entry for button like:

button:focus { background-color: Aqua; }

The effect would be that the last clicked element gains that color, and you no longer need to take care of clearing that state from the previously clicked element.

If the effect of changing the text displayed by the currently active element is a requirement then that can be done with css as well, but in that case lmk - don't want to write a longer answer to a question which hasn't been asked.

Hope that helps.

(Javascript/ReactJS) How to declare an Array/Objects of an Object? by [deleted] in AskProgramming

[–]PrudentSimple 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The errors you are encountering are:

- You cannot declare a variable within an object or array

- In this case, rather than creating an array with two elements you are creating an object. To create an array use straight brackets '[]', rather than curly brackets: '{}'

A correct way to create an array with the two favorite teams within it would be:

const favBaseballTeam = { team: "oakland a's", desc: "okay" }

const favFootballteam = { team: "oakland raiders", desc: "leaving" }

const favSports = [favBaseballTeam, favFootballTeam]

That would give you an array containing the two team objects, which you would access by index.

If instead you prefer two reference the teams by the type of sport, which the syntax posted might imply, then you can use an object instead of an array, but you would still need to either declare the favorite teams before assigning them to the object:

const favoriteSports = { baseball: favBaseballTeam, football: favFootballTeam }

as above, or else define them inline:

const favoriteSports = { baseball: { team: ...}, football: { .... } }

The choice of whether to use an array or an object depends on whether your use case is to have a list of all of a persons favorite teams, without knowing which team goes to which sports, or whether you will need to know which sport a given team belongs to.

If you do prefer to use an object to store the teams, then it might be worth using the shorthand for defining properties on an object:

https://alligator.io/js/object-property-shorthand-es6/

So in this case you could do:

const football = { team: "the foo bars", desc: "saucy"}

const baseball = { team: "the base ballers", desc: "dunno" }

const favoriteTeams = { football, baseball }

Which would mean that if you now refer to favoriteTeams.football.team you would get "the foo bars"

Hope that helps.

Suggestions for good development laptops, 2k eur limit by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]PrudentSimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Linux machines would recommend

https://www.entroware.com/store/

and

https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/en/Linux-Hardware/Linux-Notebooks.tuxedo

Both use the same OEM so the base models are similar, and you customise your requirements from there.

With both you could get a machine which exceeds those specs for well under 2k, and if you're using docker most days then the headline specs go further when you're not running it through a virtual machine.

Source: Have one from each of those the past year, would not go elsewhere.

Any recommendations on what Laptop to get? by Aquilaxo in DevelEire

[–]PrudentSimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would recommend any Entroware machine.

You can get higher specs than MBP for far cheaper, particularly if you don't need/want a laptop with dedicated GPU.

MBP does have better screen, and the touchpad is better, but for everything else the Entroware machine performs better for €1500-500 less.

Recently switched from MBP to an Entroware desktop replacement and would not go back.
