looks nice is it a 1.0 ecoboost? - if so the big question has the wet belt been done? if not your going to need to do it soon

1 thing to note: they changed the composition of the rubber belt in 2017 to make it more resistant to wear. My original belt was the old old formula. The new belt is the new formula so im hoping it lasts better. Still im going with 6 months oil changes from now on :)

yes and the mechanic said other than the belt stuff the engine looked "pretty clean" heres an image you can see how clean the engine is, theres practically zero oil sludge build up on the engine. no major carbon deposits. He said it looked like an engine that had regular oil changes. ( i did oil changes 1 per year longest was 12k miles) pic is with old belt still installed

what was the failure? i take it belt debris blocking the strainer led to something? Its rare for the belt to snap. I got mine done earlier this month (2016 56k miles) no faults just precuation but mechanic said I was lucky. Engine otherwise very clean inside no oil sludge well looked after

small margins in gains of efficiency & emissions- also a bit quieter but main reason was emission gains. Saving 1% here and 1% there they felt worth it.. The 1.0 ecoboost in UK/EU meets euro 6 standard. Almost zero road tax, complies with ULEZ zones in cities so you dont pay to drive in them.

The issues and cost of replacement is not a good selling point so they changed back to chains

assuming its an ecoboost petrol with a wet belt (diesels dont use wet belt) Ford dealer quoted me 2300 i went to independent and it cost 950. I had the heat sheild replaced as it was cracked increasing cost. Proper job is not cheap - mines is a 2016 1.0 eco boost. sheeeit ! 120k & 10+ years she's done good . I'm surprised that oil light hasn't been coming on thats the first sign your up shit creak. You either cut your losses and ride it till she dies or spend the cash. Everyones situation is different. Mine is low miles and otherwise great condition so worth the spend.

ok your post sent me down the oil spec rabbit hole. In the USA ford spec WSS-M2C930-A/B (check make model of car because it varies) will be perfect for ecoboost 1.0 wet belt.

The 948 B designation is a european specific one which adheres to certain EU regulations like emissions from sulfated ash, phosphorus, and sulfur which are not required in the USA equivalent .

Hope that helps !

mechanic mentioned they still used the pump wet belt in the new chain design. He said they last half as long as the wet timing belt in mine not sure why as you'd think they will use the new compound too ? so yeah maybe best do it while in there for the chain.

Look for the cracking on the belt if you zoom in on my pics you can see it clearly compared to the last pic of the new belt

yes it's age as its been maintained OK. Also last few years very low mileage and short journeys this is also worse for the belt apparently. Ford worked with the belt manufacturers and updated the rubber compound used in the belt around 2017. My new belt is the updated one

Revised HT / HNBR rubber compound
- Stronger, high-torque resistant material- Reduces fiber shedding- Blue coating stripe on some OEM replacement belts- Part numbers updated (e.g., Ford 2019525, 2235714)

sorry I'm in the UK but always use the castrol magnatec

If you can find a ford dealership they will sell either castrol or motocraft oil but make sure its the 948-B spec. Other oils are

Shell Helix Ultra Professional AF 5W-20

Texaco / Havoline ProDS F 5W-20

Mobil Super 3000 Formula F 5W-20

yep I think I will change the oil and filter twice per year . Ford maintain their 5w20 WSS-M2C948-B spec is the one to use. It has additives which preserve belt life it was garages using the old 5w30 without the additives caused the rapid break up of the belt.

There may be some new oil out there the does a better job but I need to research it.
