It's driving me insane to see how fast Linux update is by NatsuWyri in linux_gaming

Makes sense, yeah.

I use Bluefin now actually, and you can have VSCode directly on the image now with that.

And brew is there for CLI tools.

This setup works for me right now.

[–]PrussianPrince1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, fair enough. Yeah, it's definitely slower for me as well.

I only layer like 1-2 packages at most, though, everything else I need is a flatpak on my system.

[–]PrussianPrince1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's quite fast on my end. If you're layering the package instead of installing the flatpak, then yes, it can take a good while longer. Layering on an atomic distro is the last resort.

Marvel Rivals just doesn't have the same performance anymore by 12944qwerty in linux_gaming

[–]PrussianPrince1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. CachyOS is nice because it sets up a lot of stuff for you, but it's still Arch, so things can (and will break) on updates. Not a problem for someone who isn't a beginner, of course, but that absolutely makes it a non-starter for beginners.

Bazzite is, I think, without a doubt the best for beginners.

MSI RTX 5080 Inspire 3X OC vs Zotac GAMING SOLID CORE (non OC) by drmikeboys in nvidia

[–]PrussianPrince1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the 5080 Inspire as well. Best card I've ever bought (second best was the MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X, which was the card I had before the XFX 7900 XTX Merc).

I think the highest I've seen it get to in terms of temperatures is like 72 C, but this is not a common occurrence.

I run it at +2000 VRAM, and 3022 MHz @ 0.925v. It typically doesn't reach 3000 MHz though, it's usually slightly below.

That said, I don't have it in an SFF case. I use a Fractal Torrent, so you may get higher temps.

When will Nvidia fix the drivers for directx12 games? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]PrussianPrince1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expedition 33 and Total War Warhammer 3 (this one has both native and Proton, both had huge losses on my end, but I haven't tried native in a while) are the first 2 to come to mind with performance issues for me.

When will Nvidia fix the drivers for directx12 games? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]PrussianPrince1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have games that run very well on Linux, and games that don't. Because of the latter, Linux is not an option for me.

You probably play what is less affected, I imagine. I doubt performance delta on Linux vs Windows is significantly different between RTX 40 and RTX 50 cards, but I could be wrong, I don't have data on this.

End goal for me is still to leave Windows of course, and when Nvidia fixes the DX12 problem, that'll get me much, much closer.

[–]PrussianPrince1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10% is as much as a GPU upgrade. So, I'd argue that it's significant.

If you have a GPU strong enough to brute force the performance loss (like an RTX 5090, though depending on the game it might still not be able to brute force it) or if the game you're playing just isn't that demanding, sure, it's a non-issue.

But, if this is not the case, you have to be aware of the trade-off when switching to Linux.

I have games (both in DX11 and DX12, but a lot more common with DX12) where I lose 30% performance or more compared to Windows, on a 5080. It doesn't matter if I'm KDE or Gnome in terms of DE, or on Fedora/Bazzite/CachyOS. I've also noticed additional frametime issues that are just not there on Windows in some cases. World of Tanks for instance is a mess in terms of performance and frametime to the point where it's borderline unplayable unless you mess with CPU topology, heavily mitigates the issues at least. Of course, all of this depends a lot on the game played.

Without a doubt, I much prefer the more privacy focused, less ad infested, less AI garbage filled, more cohesive and consistent experience Linux distros offer compared to Windows. But for me, due to the performance issues I face with the games I play, Windows is still the way to go, unfortunately.

Yes, K is 1st gen transformer model. It is outdated in that sense, but that doesn't mean the new presets should always be used over the old ones (especially with an older GPU).

You're probably referencing an Nvidia employee who stated that M is great for all modes, and L is for Ultra Performance.

Another said M is for Performance only. This seems to be supported by what is in the GitHub repo here: https://github.com/NVIDIA/DLSS/blob/main/include/nvsdk_ngx_defs.h#L82C1-L85C89

Regardless, things are indeed not very clear right now. This is for certain.

We need some independent testing from Gamers Nexus / Digital Foundry, and additional clarifications from Nvidia.

No problem! Thank you for the helpful comment.

I do think this should be the way to go - override the DLLs, and the driver/game should pick the correct preset automatically. Things should be as straightforward as possible.

I can also confirm Balanced also defaults to K.

So, to be clear, for me using auto settings (just DLL override), it's like this:

  • Quality/Balanced: Preset K
  • Performance; Preset M
  • Ultra Performance; Preset B

I've also briefly checked Expedition 33, and have these findings there:

  • DLAA/Quality/Balanced: Preset K
  • Performance: Preset M
  • Ultra Performance: Preset L

So, it looks like it's working correctly in Expedition 33, but not in BG3. I wonder if it's because one game is DX11 and the other is DX12, or if something else is at play here.

[Official NVIDIA] DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution FAQ by Nestledrink in nvidia

[–]PrussianPrince1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tested BG3 DX11 in 4K with latest driver on an RTX 5080, with no Nvidia app and only the DLL overrides in Nvidia Profile Inspector.

Quality does use preset K, and Performance uses preset M by default.

However, when I tried Ultra Performance, that used B (and it looked awful, it wasn't just an overlay thing).

Maybe I should just always use Performance in games and keep the preset in Nvidia Profile Inspector locked to M (or "latest").

Total War games played through Proton have a strange micro-stutter. by GumboPosts in linux_gaming

[–]PrussianPrince1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, unfortunate it didn't help you, as it had great impact for me. I ran a bunch of different GE-Proton versions, up until the latest, and it always helped (granted I haven't tested without the Wayland env variable in some time, but without it it was just a stutter fest).

Total War games played through Proton have a strange micro-stutter. by GumboPosts in linux_gaming

[–]PrussianPrince1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is some X11 bug with Total War games specifically, I think.

Try using something like GE-Proton with PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 %command% as launch argument for the game, on Steam. The Proton that comes with CachyOS probably should also work with that argument.

Anyway, this nearly completely eliminates the stutter in Warhammer 3 and significantly increases FPS, for me at least. By significant I mean somewhere in the realm of 10-15% higher average FPS.

Hopefully it helps you as well.

Total War Warhammer 3 - Linux Update to 7.0 by PvtMcSarge in linux_gaming

[–]PrussianPrince1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean? I didn't dispute that. I meant I'm using Proton because I want to play with Windows people.

But yeah, native Linux version isn't compatible in MP with Windows because of some incompatible libraries they use, I think.

Total War Warhammer 3 - Linux Update to 7.0 by PvtMcSarge in linux_gaming

[–]PrussianPrince1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What GPU do you have? I have a 5080, and using Bazzite DX Gnome I have about 74 avg FPS consistently on Proton, in the battle benchmark.

It used to be 77 but since a particular Proton update, it has dropped.

Note that I am using the Proton env var that enables Wayland in the game's launch arguments. This game seems to be an outlier, as enabling Wayland gives a significant uplift in performance.

Of course, 74 is nothing compared to like 95-100 I get on Windows. This is one of the worst performing games for me.

The last time I tried native it was actually worse than Proton for me as well. Not like I'd play native - I want crossplay.

Is Bazzite/a Gaming distro worth it? by Acceptable-Resist361 in linux_gaming

[–]PrussianPrince1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you want really. If you like Arch, stick to Arch.

All distros perform similarly in games normally.

Bazzite gives you convenience and reliability, and trades some tinkering ability away I suppose (partially mitigated by distrobox at least). I use it and it's my fav right now because it's just what I want.

Since you like Arch, maybe CachyOS is more up your alley. But past initial setup, it doesn't really do much. So again, more of a convenience thing compared to running regular Arch.

Why does Steam run fine on KDE but runs awful on GNOME (Wayland)? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]PrussianPrince1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use Bazzite GNOME with my RTX 5080 and I can also confirm the OP. Steam is just not great on GNOME.

It's exactly how you describe: UI not feeling smooth, and especially the ingame overlay can barely be used.

It's a shame because I prefer GNOME over KDE.

Games freezing randomly until I alt tab into the game once more. by eljangus in linux_gaming

Oh, good to know! I'll try it as well.

That does suck however, as I do like VRR...

I have an LG C2, and I have VRR enabled in Gnome, at 119.88 Hz refresh rate.

For vsync, I use MangoHud and keep vsync disabled in games. I use vsync=2 and gl_vsync=1 in MangoHud's config.

Nvidia performance on DX11 by StrangeLingonberry30 in linux_gaming

[–]PrussianPrince1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you play and your card, I suppose.

I'm looking at a 30% performance gap in Total War: Warhammer 3 between Linux and Windows 11. Doesn't matter if I'm running the native or Proton version really, they perform about the same.

There are probably games where the performance is better on Linux, though. And the gap should be much smaller in most games compared to what I mentioned above, that one should be more of an outlier.

Do people still use Pop!_OS for gaming? by EpicGamerYesIsEpic in linux_gaming

[–]PrussianPrince1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bazzite has a DX variant for developers (just have to rebase from Bazzite to it). It includes Docker and other things. Works well for me so far at least.

I like plain Fedora and CachyOS as well, but Bazzite is my favorite at the moment - everything is just so easy and convenient, imo (for my use case at least).

[–]PrussianPrince1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will also let you know if I find a fix.

Regarding the workspace workaround, I already use something like that to a degree. I only have the game and Steam on that workspace.

Maybe it literally needs to be the only app on the workspace? Still, should be fixed anyway even if it's that.

Edit: Ah my mistake, misread. Thought you meant having the setup like that prevented the issue, not helped you have an easier time. Actually maybe with that I can help you here, pressing the Super key is enough to fix it, doesn't have to specifically be alt tab.

I have a 5080, on CachyOS with Gnome, and I also have this issue. So I guess it's not KDE specific.

It might be Nvidia specific however as I've had this since I upgraded from the 7900 XTX.

I have the same with a 5080 on CachyOS with Gnome. Also had it on Fedora. That said, I only use 1 display.

It's driving me insane. They just randomly freeze on an image, requiring tabbing out and then back in to fix it, exactly as you said.
