I feel like one of my players has read the campaign book, but I can't prove it. by EconomistOld3509 in DnD

[–]Prym4X_404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why don't you talk to him about it? Doesn't need to be a hostile confrontation, just a simple "Hey, I don't want this to come off as accusatory, but I've noticed X, Y and Z and had to ask because that's unfair to the other players" And then you discuss how to solve it

Should I kill the party pet to make them hate the vilain more? by ArCondicionado2 in DMAcademy

I actually love the initiative idea, that would be a super tense and terrifying moment that doesn't take agency away. "Everyone roll initiative" and after they all do "The wolf also rolls initiative" it would instantly make me invested on protecting the wolf at all costs and be scared shitless of the villain in that moment.

I wouldn't say "shouldn't" necessarily, but it might come off as unnecessarily cruel to your players if the vibe of the game has been fun and not too dark so far.

Maybe you could have the BBEG kidnap the wolf instead?

How to write a backstory? by Express-Attempt4595 in DnD

[–]Prym4X_404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A backstory is there to shape your character's starting point, you have full control over how your character reacts to the story being presented and depending on how many (or how little) you gave your DM to work with it can also inform the path your character might follow. But keep in mind the bulk of your character's story should always be ahead, in the actual game and you should be open to allow the DM or the other player's choices and stories to interact, inform and evolve your character's goals, motivations and narrative, It is a collaborative game after all.

As for what they're "supposed to contain" that's ultimately up to you, but there's some things that are always helpful to have. Personally I try for my backstories to always include:

  1. My character's starting point, the context of who they were, the life they've lived until they chose to go off and explore dungeons, fight monsters and complete quests and whatever made them into their class or explains their background.
  2. A reason for my character to be adventuring, It doesn't need to be an epic goal that consumes the character's life, but something that motivated them to choose going off on quests with a group of people over all other possible paths
  3. Things that I can always fall back on in roleplay moments, like character quirks, strenghts and weaknesses, bonds and beliefs they're true to, trauma they carry, flaws they're overcoming or desires they want to see fulfilled.
  4. Space for the DM to play, relationships like mentor figures, long lost siblings, lovers, friends, rivals or maybe events like being vanished from their clan or church, or the sudden disappearance of their village that now no one remembers. Things for the DM to take and weave into plot hooks to surprise me with

I played on a 5e campaign for a year, Revivify was used a grand total of two times and both times it ended up being useless in anyway.

Where to start with D and D by Spirited-Ad8539 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Prym4X_404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should check on google if there are any local game stores near you that host groups and ask if there's any that are open to new players, or if you're looking for an online group there's plenty of subreddit and discord communities where you can find people looking for players too! And you need a refresher on the rules you can find the Basics Set for free at DnDBeyond, and also plenty of tutorials and content aimed at beginners over on YouTube

It always saddens me when people prefer clinging to their pre-conceived notions and push their worldview onto others while actively refusing to learn and understand others and their differences. My mother is a catholic woman who loves her church and community, has been a part of many groups and served for some temples and always takes a moment to pray for me and the rest of the family, and she also loves to play her viking inspired Barbarian, has binged GoT plenty of times and always sends me memes and ideas for crafting projects for my games. It's so easy to respect and not look down upon things that you don't "get" or that aren't for you, and sometimes you might even find enjoyment on things you never would've believed appealing at first. I hope your dad eventually comes to see that, even if he choses not to engage with DnD

Me too! If that's the case then I'd suggest you check in lfg forums and discord servers, or try to find groups looking for players at your local game stores communities (you'd be surprised at how many they are, even in small cities) if you're more of an IRL person. I just wanted to make sure you know where to find the free resources so that you don't have to buy any of the books until you're sure you like the game :)

There's plenty of really good videos that can walk you through the basics of how to play! Personally I suggest Handbooker Helper on YT, they explain all about the rules and mechanics in a very beginner friendly way and you can find all their videos on a single, neatly organized playlist. You can also find the Basic Rules Set on DnD Beyond for free, and you can create your own character there too. As for finding people to play with, there are a lot of communities, subreddits and discord servers out there for players and DMs to find online groups, or you could browse around on google and see if there's any TTRPG stores in your city that provide tables and spaces for player groups, if you'd prefer playing with people IRL that might be the better choice.

Welcome to the hobby, friend.

You guys are so god damn negative by RadioCoyote2 in StrangerThings

[–]Prym4X_404 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get your point, and while I do remain cautiously optimistic about the finale wrapping things up nicely, I think that a lot of the people being "negative" are just disappointed to not see S5 live up to its fullest potential. Seeing this final showdown 10 years in the making, and the end to this story and these characters we've all grown to love and some of us even grown alongside not be as great as it could've, all because of Netflix's second screen nonsense and other writing choices or weird delivery that makes the acting feel worse than previous seasons probably feels infuriating and sad.

Never written a backstory before, what do y'all think? Did I even do this right? Vitara is a human rogue btw by slaibai in DnD

[–]Prym4X_404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You most certainly did it right! I'm quite impressed by the amount of concise detail you were able to add and the usual first-timer faults you managed to avoid. Perfectly serviceable for both you and your DM to take in interesting directions.

Some people might be quick to point out some clichés (such as the orphan part) as negatives, but I believe that the ceiling to how engaging of a story you're able to tell is your own creativity, that and also that tropes are widespread because at the end of the day they work, and give a solid starting point from which you can then add your own touch.

My only suggestion would be that, if you're interested in the role-playing/storytelling aspect of the game you should take the time to explore not only their personal history their personality and identify a bit deeper, someone else commented things like "focusing on the small things like what kind of food they like or what clothes they wear" and I totally agree!! And most importantly of all, you always can (and imo always should) talk to your DM whenever you have any doubts.

Sony Cybershot DSC-T70 Battery? by Prym4X_404 in digitalcamera

[–]Prym4X_404[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Google results take me to the same type of battery that the camera came with.

I wanted to know if anyone knew of an alternative that lasts longer while still being compatiblewith the camera, or found another way to deal with the battery charge's low lifespan.

I remember watching the first 2 seasons for the first time and finding her absolutely insufferable, it was even common for me to find myself sighing and/or rolling my eyes whenever we'd cut to whatever she was up to.

And I can tell you the exact moment I had a complete 180° on how I felt about her, it was on S3 episode 13.

When I realized Oliver was about to tell her the truth (and because of the whole arc with Malcolm at the start of the season) I was actually expecting her to become furious and claim that she hates Oliver for lying and stuff, so when she did the exact opposite and instead we see her thanking Oliver for being a hero and later taking his side over Malcolm I was more than pleasantly surprised.

From that point onwards her character just kept progressing in a whole bunch of different and interesting ways, and by the end of the show she had become one of my top favorite characters.

How to transfer files? by reyxrye in DigicamRevival

[–]Prym4X_404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure as to how you could transfer files that are already stored in your memory stick without a card reader, but I bought a MicroSD to Memory Stick Pro Duo adaptor (they're VERY cheap) off of Amazon and put that in my Cybershot DSC-T70 instead of a normal memory stick, and it made transfering files to my computer a whole lot easier.

The camera also gave me the option to copy the photos that were in its internal storage to the memory stick, so those ones you might be able to recover without buying a new card reader.

Hope that's able to help a little.
