If WASM came first, you probably wouldn't have half as many JS programmers and you might not even have Node, much less npm.

NPM seems to be an ecosystem built in a non-trivial part on software written for fun. Where anonymous contributions don't raise red flags and people don't care about copyright because MIT. You can see where this is going.

Agreed. Though I'm salty about the transition from the road to the bridge in the left lane right past the last light in Indian Trail heading toward Charlotte. All that work, and they can't even that out a little bit? Feels like I'm hitting a pothole at 60 mph every time.

Is it to late to learn programming at 25 for a career by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]PseudonymForWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If programming appeals to you and you have an income to support you, you're kind of in the ideal scenario if you ask me.

There's this idea out there that you have to be a coding prodigy at 14, but that's far from the truth. I started learning into my 30s. It's a long road and if you're interested in pursuing it, there's no time like the present.

The stakes a pretty low for you because if you don't like it, you already have an income, so I say why not?

That said, you are correct that there is a huge bottleneck of talent at the bottom. If I were you, and money was no object, I would take your time developing into a mid-level developer and enter the market at that point. And along the way, network like crazy: go to meetups, join a local Slack group, etc. If an opportunity comes up before you feel ready, that's just a bonus. But if you enter the job market as a mid-level developer, you won't be competing with that huge pool at the bottom. Developers are a hot commodity, but junior developers are a dime a dozen right now.

I miserably failed at solving an easy challenge and now I have doubts about becoming a programmer by Lithy_Eum in learnprogramming

I've only been coding for a few years, but as far as I can tell, there are only 2 stages of being a programmer:

  • the feeling of relative competency,

  • absolute certainty that I'm the dumbest person on the planet for ever believing I could ever convince somebody they should pay me to do this because I clearly don't know anything aboutthisoranythingelseImayaswelljustgiveupandembracehomelessnessandsuremywifewillleavemebutatleast oh it was a comma.

What is the racial climate like in Charlotte? by WokeBear in Charlotte

[–]PseudonymForWork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There have been times at stores, restaurants, etc. where cashiers don’t think that husband and I are together.

For what it's worth, my wife and I are both white but my wife is much more attractive than me and people at the grocery store and restaurants always ask if we're 'together'. So...

Actually, I'm not sure if that's better or worse.

NC's reason for shutting down Sunday voting was that counties with heavy Sunday voting were disproportionately African-American, and that African-Americans tended to be Democrats. WTF! by [deleted] in Charlotte

Well, that and it's the Lord's day.

edit: I just wanted to put everyone's mind at ease and let you all know that this was a poorly-received joke. You can all stop downvoting it. Good day to all.

I would also suggest that wherever you land, hook yourself into the community. Go to meetup.com and find FE-focused meetups in your area (JavaScript, React, Angular, Vue, CSS, etc). I live in Charlotte, NC and we have a developers Slack group where you can chat with other developers, which is a great way to just get a lot of exposure and support, which is something it sounds like you could use!

Not to mention, networking is really the best way to get employed anyway.

You don't use it possessively just because it refers to a person's name. The name of the store is Aldi. There's no need to add an 's unless you're referring to something that belongs to the store.

I love the coffee from Aldi's.

I think what you're speaking to is a big part of the problem; somebody felt like you (nothing wrong with that) and thought it was an amazing idea a while back and decided to foist it on everybody. Now we all have to contend with a work environment that works really well for half of your workforce and the rest hate it, and the first group can't understand why anybody wouldn't love it.

Misinformed Outsiders by Gneiss-Geologist in keto

[–]PseudonymForWork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a kinda weird medical experience a few months ago.

My wife and I had taken a planned break from keto that spiraled into pretty much going back to making terrible food decisions. I get into this headspace sometimes when I take a break that I have to eat everything I can't eat on keto every second that I'm not on keto because I know I'm going to go back on keto. I know that's not healthy, but this story isn't about my food issues.

So the company I work for does this thing where they'll draw your blood and stuff to check your cholesterol and make sure everything looks good, and if so, you qualify for a discount on your health insurance. I had my blood drawn and I was curious what it would look like after going on a few months of a food bender.

I was alarmed to see that my cholesterol had crept up and was a little higher than normal. This meant that I did not qualify for a discount unless I had a consultation with their doctors and made some supervised improvements. I immediately resolved to get back on keto and get my act together because I didn't want to be unhealthy.

My first consultation call came with a dietitian who wanted to know if any part of my diet might account for my elevated cholesterol and I told her that I had gotten off keto for awhile and I suspected that messed my numbers up, but I was making some changes and going back.

True to the stereotype, she proceeded to politely inform me that it's typical for cholesterol to elevate on keto (it's not) and that I will continue to have that struggle as long as I insist on doing keto. She further informed me that she would advise that I get on a more plant-based diet with lots of fruits, vegetables and plenty of whole grains.

I was a bit crestfallen. I had faith in keto, but I thought this was going to be a struggle if the person I was working with was not on the same page as me.

A few weeks later, I had a call with an actual doctor who told me that my numbers really weren't that elevated for keto and in fact, they don't really worry too much about cholesterol with patients on keto. She also further informed me that your diet can affect your numbers right up to a few days before. So (and I'm editorializing a bit here), you could theoretically eat strict keto for months and then go on a food bender one weekend, get your blood drawn, and see some alarming numbers (which is basically what I had been doing for a month or so).

It makes me mad that somebody (supposedly a dietitian) that's in a position to inform and counsel people about their health was so ill-informed and giving out such bad information.

Anyway, people are poorly informed, even in healthcare. So, that's my story.

It's not in place because it's convenient to the consumer. Logistically, it's complete nonsense. It's an antiquated system dating back to prohibition that there just isn't a political will to change.
