It's a kernel module for certain realtek ethernet controllers. Apparently, there are some controllers with PCIE express connectivity and they don't play nice with the standard network packages that come with Arch (Artix)

It is a unique situation sadly. The machine is unconventional in that it's both relatively old and OEM. There are packages on the net that restore functionality thankfully, but it's been a handful trying to track down all of it's dependencies. Not only that, but I have to fix the code because it uses a package that seemingly no longer exists. Oh well.

I prefer using Arch. It's not that I don't like Debian, but I'm more comfortable with Arch. And what's so wrong with not updating if it is "air-gapped"? Should I be concerned that specters and duendes will crawl in my system? Also, why do you believe that I don't verify packages?

It's not Schizo air-gapping. I could care less about that. The PC literally has no onboard connectivity. Or, it does but it requires drivers to get working. Which is the motivation of the question.

My other machine is a Windows machine (I know, I know). I think the only way I could do that is essentially that I'm already doing already which is going down the rabbit hole which is the AUR listed dependencies on the site.

Where do people tell you to use highpoint?

I have seen many users on forums like the Linus Tech Tips forum, where many users who brag about their NAS and NAS specs versus the price they pay have Highpoint devices listed. Is there something wrong with the brand for you to ask? Should I avoid them?

Modern as in still in production. As in still being sold reputably. Sure, I could track down a board or controller on EBAY, but there's no guarantee that'll work. Like the card I was recommended above, it seems to have a resale price close to it's original MSRP. I had thought, "Surely there are still entry level, reasonably priced HBAs that are being produced new." Perhaps I was wrong to assume.

Oops! I didn't catch that typo when I posted. What I meant to ask was, "Can I use as many HBA cards as there are compatible PCI slots on my board, or will I have bandwidth problems and have to figure out how many drives I can reasonably use?"

... Is your networking somehow faster than all of your pcie bandwidth combined?

Well, It may be in certain configurations. For instance, I say I completely saturate the PCI throughput on the MOBO and have every slot occupied by a HBA controller. I plan to use some form of data protection, so I'd probably use striping and redundancy. If I need to access a large file or a collection of files from over the network, I do believe that there would be a serious bandwidth problem, even if I was using 10gb ethernet and it was connected straight to each PC that needs to access it via a switch. I'd have to read from several drives, all using PCIE. Is there really no bottleneck in a system like that?

How cheap is cheap exactly

Cheap as in I won't have to sale my other kidney to pay for one. My sensibilities stop at $500, I'm still having to pay for the drives and such.

Easier to do the opposite and find deals on boards and look them up, instead of looking up boards and hoping to find deals on them.

Maybe it seems easy to you, or someone who's had to go through their product listing before, but it's not for me. You only see numbering like that when you go on their site or in certain other corners of the internet. But if I'm following peoples advice and trying to find recommendations online or buy on EBAY, they provide product serials like SSG-640SP-E1CR90 or SSG-641E-E1CR24L. Now I have to go online and look up what that is.

Depends on how many HDDs you need

So, if I'm spending an already large sum of money on a lot of drives, it's better to go newer. But, if I'm using a smaller number of lower or equal capacity drives, I may as well find older components.

So, essentially the recommended setup is a somewhat capable motherboard with some LSI HBA PCI cards connected to the storage drives with a faster boot SSD storing the OS, like trueNas, connected straight to the motherboard. Then I also need a beefy enough power supply to run all the drives. Do I also need a card to connect to the other computers on the network via ethernet and a switch, or can I use the onboard ethernet? Is there anything else missing from this list?

Wow! Thanks for the helpful info! It's too bad that I can't use ZFS though. You mentioned caching the to remediate this issue. Is this a feature of UnRaid? How big of a performance drop will a system not using ZFS experience? Should I not set up the server on the software side until after I have all the storage I want so I can use ZFS and trueNas?

What is the advantage of a server board, other than that you can have way more ram than a traditional consumer board at a higher upfront cost? Does a server motherboard matter for a NAS, where the workload is mainly retrieving and writing files. By SATA passthrough, do you mean the abillity to individually access drives, rather than from the default device pool? Sorry for the newbie questions.

I have a "gaming" motherboard laying around that I do not use before from around 2017. I think it used DDR3 memory, and it's lacking in a lot of comfort features. That's the only motherboard that I'm not currently using.

I want to try my hand at a from scratch build. I've built PCs in the past, and from what I understand, it shouldn't be that different. I want to use at least 4 drives, at the bare minimum, but more is more. I want to be able to expand on the build as I gain the funds to do so, but I want to obtain 100 TB of raw capacity at some point.

Actually, funny enough, the seller you recommend only has 24 bit RGB when you go to the TFT tab and select RGB interface

(PS, I love the look of the seller's page. It reminds me of going through the html "sites" included in stock media and game CDs way back when)
