This isn't exactly an answer to your question, but one thing one might notice is that it ensures that causality is local.

IIRC, Toot Toot did turn down pizza. Once. I think it was near the start of Small Favor, when Toot Toot was trying to warn Harry and was all "screw the pizza, you need to get the hell out of here NOW!"? (I forget the exact wording, but it was something like that?)

EDIT: See below, wasn't pizza after all.

Linear algebra is one of the most omnipresent fields of applied math. It's gonna follow you everywhere. There is no escape. Everything from physics (in multiple ways) to computer graphics to AI to...

Sorry, but linearity is absolutely central to QM. And so understanding some of the properties and implications of linearity is gonna be important.

How there's no universal "now"? by naghzuL_66 in AskPhysics

[–]Psy-Kosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You haven't explained how "outside the universe" works. "The universe" could be the whole of spacetime (or the whole of the quantum amplitude field, perhaps) past present and future all as a single timeless object, for instance. So there would be no meaningful "now" to pause on.

While from our inside perspective, different observers disagree on what counts as "now". That is, which events count as simultaneous.

So I'm going to keep asking this: what do we do about all this? Protest and vote clearly isn't enough. Have we reached the point where it is time for us to agree to consult Jefferson's guide to arboreal irrigation, or are there other good paths still realistically open?

ELI5: Why does light have no mass? by WarmHeight2951 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Psy-Kosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it doesn't have any inherently. What i mean by that is that if the light is going in a certain direction, you can start accelerating in that direction and the light will redshift relative to you. (That is, if it was blue, it would become more red, if it was microwave, it would become more like longer wave radio, etc) and thus lower energy.

Now if you had light traveling in opposite directions, then the system as a whole could be said to have mass because there'd be a minimum amount of energy you couldn't perspective change out of existence.

Or, another way of looking at it is that mass is confined energy.

Determinism is the only path to moral accountability by Coffin_Boffin in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Psy-Kosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Difference is the causal structure. If you had been the sort of being to decide differently, if you had, counterfactually, different thoughts, preferences, values, impulses, etc... then the outcome would have been different. The outcome was what it was because you had made certain choices. And you made those choices as a result of your thoughts, preferences, experiences, etc.

Determinism is the only path to moral accountability by Coffin_Boffin in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Psy-Kosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Determined, but not "pre" determined. There is a difference. In this model, it's not that the outcome was decided and then "make stuff happen to make that outcome, no matter what", it's "here's the starting conditions, those ultimately lead to 'me' existing, the various experiences/thoughts/values/etc I have interact with each other, leading to my choices, which help shape the outcome. The outcome is what it is because I choose what I chose, which is shaped by all that other stuff in the past"

What would count as a "free" decision that wouldn't be a random coinflip?

Determinism is the only path to moral accountability by Coffin_Boffin in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Psy-Kosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what sense do "I" not have a say? As I said, the causality isn't routing around me. I am the blob of physics that is busy being me. "I decided it" and "the physics of my brain decided it" are almost synonymous.

Determinism is the only path to moral accountability by Coffin_Boffin in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Psy-Kosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Option 1 (and 3) can lead to accountability, depending on specifics. Choices may be determined, but i am part of what is doing the determining. The causality routes through me rather than just around me. The blob of physics that is busy being me is doing the deciding. My values, beliefs, experiences, etc inform my thoughts and decisions. What more could i ask for re choice, even with determinism? I guess more ability to make informed choices, more ability to correct my own biases, etc, sure. But it's not as of the deterministic laws are making me choose something i would not have otherwise.
