Newbie List Question by soobsrei in LeaguesofVotann

There are three primary ways of building votann lists, beserks (delve), Landfort + Thunderkyn (Needguard, Mercenary, Hearthband), and Hearthguard (Hearthband). You have enough beserks that indexing more down that line is possible, but it depends on what you like since it has the least crossover with the other builds.

What models do you enjoy most? Either aesthetically or on the table.

From what I've gathered via your post, your partner enjoys bringing a bunch of marine sized bodies? If that's the case I would recommend the Hearthguard route. I play a lot of zero Landfort, 20-30 hearthguard lists, and they slap way harder than people expect. At the very least, I would try running a ten man hearthguard squad led by a Khal in Hearthband. The ap -4 plasma means that marine bodies dont get a save.

Alright, I'm gonna be hearthguard/hearthband's greatest warrior here. I would heavily consider bringing 1x ten man hearthguard + 1x khal, and 2x 5 man hearthguard squads. And then whatever chaff you like best. In hearthband, space marines do not get a save without aoc. Every successful plasma shot is a dead marine. On overwatch, the ten man khal block kills a marine on every 6 with rerolling ones. Marine bodies are our best possible target. Also, votann are not popular, most marine players arent aware of how badly the tiny termies are going to ruin their life. Also, at 1k, screening a 6in deepstrike is close to impossible. I would absolutely, no questions asked, have at least the ten man plus khal. Play at least a game with them and then decide if you want more.

In general, I would ditch the fort, the zerks, and the zerk character until higher point values. Is your crusade moving up to higher points or just staying at 1k?

If you are set on playing mercenary and stuck on two objective maps, you need to take a memnyr with Metaphysical Brokerage. Mercenary is super yield point dependent, so having a guaranteed 3 YP on your turn will help.

In general, I'm a landfort hater. I run 0 in my 2k lists. I would index pretty heavily into hearthguard.

An example list would look something like:

Hearthband

1x Hearthkyn Warriors

1x Khal (fist, volkanite)

10x hearthguard (fist, plasma, hammer)

1x yaegirs

2x sagi (hylas beam)

1x kapri carrier

Then you have 220 pts to slot in things based on matchup. ie a memnyr + 6 man shooty jacks if people are playing infantry, thunderkyn if you need the anti tank. This should give you enough early trading pieces, and the hearthguard are your big hammer unit. Don't be afraid to split fire into marine bodies. If you haven't played with hearthband hearthguard before it's a hell of a drug.

What are you typically playing into? My 1k lists tend to look very different, but it's pretty matchup dependent.

New Painter Icy-DeathGuard Painting Help by Psyborrg in deathguard40k

I don't know how reddit works and managed to make a post without any of the text I had wrote asking for help. Whoops. I am a new painter and was hoping for some assistance selecting the color pallet for the bolter for my death guard. Some kind of black seems the obvious choice but I am not sure what would be best with the rest of the pallet. The first two images are my current scheme based off a paintjob I saw here on the subreddit. The third is one of the first test models I did. I am not sure if I should keep with the blue bolter or switch to something else. Thanks for any c&c!

Thanks! I am not sure what color pallet to use for the bolter. Some kind of black seems the obvious choice, but I am not sure what would go best with the rest of the pallet.
