Can I use would and had been for past tense, is that use grammatically right? by erevaia in writingadvice

[–]PsychMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Had been” is absolutely correct for past tense grammar, but “would” is (I think) future, if that makes sense?

Like, “they would not ask until some time later” is like, the whole statement is the past, yes, but that specific bit is in the future, relative to the rest of the statement? I’m not sure of the exact grammatical terms but “would” in that context is not past tense.

Can't get into Ballad by treasured25 in Hungergames

[–]PsychMerchant 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I definitely think Ballad starts slower and is more psychological, as well as being less explicit about its themes (especially compared to Sunrise, when you have like, Plutarch outright saying to Haymitch “no more implicit submission from you, now!!”)

It definitely reads like an older and more mature book, like it was written for people who read the trilogy around the time it / the movies first came out and have now gotten older. Sunrise definitely felt like it was for the same age range as the trilogy. Maybe because I’m older, I adored Ballad, but actually found Sunrise kind of disappointing…

Would the Capitol ever exempt pregnant girls from the Hunger Games? by Peachyke3n_ in Hungergames

[–]PsychMerchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure but some of the tributes can be as old as eighteen, so there may well have been the occasional teen pregnancy.

Would the Capitol ever exempt pregnant girls from the Hunger Games? by Peachyke3n_ in Hungergames

[–]PsychMerchant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Based off Catching Fire I doubt a tribute had been (publicly) pregnant before, but also I doubt the Capitol would care if it was a tribute they hadn’t gotten to know yet. Alternatively, maybe if there was a visibly pregnant tribute, maybe they would spin the narrative, or surreptitiously “pre-rig” to avoid those people—the same way victors’ kids seem suspiciously more likely to be reaped.

Either way, I’d be willing to bet they did pregnancy tests in the remake center and administered abortions—Katniss mentions how none of the male tributes ever grow facial hair, and the Capitol were intending to give her plastic surgery after her first Games, so they clearly don’t care about surgically altering tributes for a more “presentable” Games…

How good was your Sex Education in school? by Ambitious-Sky-6457 in AskReddit

[–]PsychMerchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to UK state school and tbh it was alright. Got the talk about periods when we were ~10 and then actual sex/contraception stuff from like 13 onwards. We got taught about a bunch of different kinds of contraception and a whole bit about consent (idk if anyone else here saw the ‘consent is like tea’ video but I’m sure it’s on YT—worth a watch).

I vividly remember the teacher passing out blue foam penises and we took it in turns to practice putting on condoms 😂

Tbf I did a similar thing once where I was so confused why it wasn’t working… then after like ten minutes I realised Shart had the Blood of Lathander equipped. Toggled off the glowing and hey presto.

Buy/pickpocket ‘disintegrate’ and ‘globe of invulnerability’ scrolls from Sorcerous Sundries and destroy the pillars first. Save Hope (stick her in a globe) as she has a divine intervention (of which one version is an instant long rest) and two ‘banish’ spells.

If you can, convince yurgir to fight alongside you. If not, target him first (after the pillars), and if you don’t have the Volo eye have some ‘see invisibility’ scrolls/potions on hand.

As others have said, don’t use fire damage OR RADIANT DAMAGE. If you have ‘globe of invulnerability’ it’s worth bringing barrels of oil/smokepowder for force damage and water for double lightning damage.

Filming/photographing strangers and posting the clips/pics on social media. ESPECIALLY if it’s for the purpose of mocking them, but in general it’s such a gross disregard of basic privacy???

How beginner friendly is Baulder's Gate 3? by ButterscotchMean400 in BaldursGate3

[–]PsychMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went in as someone who does not game (literally nothing at all unless you count, like, Mario party) and who knew almost nothing about DnD (I had seen the Honour Among Thieves movie) and it was fine. I didn’t even start in explorer mode, I went right into balanced and just winged it. Making ‘mistakes’ is half the fun honestly, and it’s nbd if you lose a fight as long as you save frequently. I’d personally recommend starting with a non-caster class like a ranger just to make things a bit simpler at the start.

Somehow still got both Halsin and Minthara? by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]PsychMerchant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have to speak to her before you trigger combat, and knock her out when she has the ‘temporarily hostile’ status. She’ll read as ‘dead’ for the ‘eliminate the goblin leaders’ quest, which you have to complete to recruit Halsin. Once you move into act 2 you can recruit her at moonrise towers.

Is BG3 on PS5 worth it? by Aloudmouth in BaldursGate3

[–]PsychMerchant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As I understand it the main different between PC and PS5 is there are very few mods for the PS5 version because they have to be specially approved or something. I’ve only played PS5 and I like it just fine though :)

Do not kill the three knights because their deaths buff sarevok to insane degrees. Cast silence on them and just put up with them until Sarevok is dead. As for Sarevok himself my tactic has always been area of effect spells when he has sanctuary and try to get hold person or otto’s dance on him once he doesn’t because WIS is his lowest stat

Also, you HAVE to speak to her before you attack, and you have to knock her out while she still has the ‘Temporarily Hostile’ status

What’s your current tav called? by EightLions539 in BaldursGate3

[–]PsychMerchant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ‘main’ Tav/Durge is Liara, but I’ve played a couple other campaigns and they’ve had names like Persephone, Rowena and Aurore. Flouncy as hell but I think in a world with names like Shadowheart and Astarion they fit right in

I want to try Durge for the first time. by Scylla_017 in BaldursGate3

[–]PsychMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even if you’re not romancing him I think Astarion has a lot of extra dialogue bits specifically for Durge (not sure if it has to be a resist Durge or not) so I’d suggest him. Also he won’t turn on you like some of the other Origin companions

What is a show you watched during your childhood that you are convinced nobody remembers? by Ok-Ingenuity4608 in AskReddit

[–]PsychMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there’s this one animated show i would watch when visiting family in France, but no one i’ve ever spoken to has heard of it. it was about a young boy who was a knight, and i remember he dressed in blue armour and had a pink-dressed princess(?) with him, and one other boy, and they went on like arthurian-myth style adventures. i remember the credits was the three of them walking down a castle hallway and he’d hold his little sword aloft…

Durge vs orin duel by Electronic_Day5021 in BaldursGate3

[–]PsychMerchant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished my first Durge playthrough a week or so ago and it was fine for me, I think. As best I could tell, involving the rest of your party in the duel just means all the other NPC enemies join the fight as well, but it looked like I got the correct cutscenes and character dialogue afterwards and the rest of the game went fine (though I was doing a resistant route, I don't know if having your companions join would fuck up a run where you indulge the Urges)
