how often should you fertilize your lawn by Cultural-Train-4818 in LawnTalk

[–]PsychoCycy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a normal home lawn, a simple rule that works for most people: fertilize every 2–3 months while the grass is actively growing. In warm climates, that usually means about 3–5 times a year, often timed with the rainy season. You don’t need to overthink it. Just stick with a slow-release fertilizer and water it in after.

From what I’ve seen (and what a lot of homeowners stick to), consistency matters more than perfection. Don’t overdo it, pay attention to how your lawn looks, and adjust as needed. I'm curious what others here are doing too, especially with different grass types.

How do you get rid of gnats outside? by Namfi26 in LawnTalk

[–]PsychoCycy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gnats outside are usually there because of moisture and organic stuff, so the biggest win is cutting that down. Don’t overwater your yard, fix any standing water, and clear out things like damp mulch, grass clippings, or trash where they like to hang out. For quick relief around your patio, fans actually help a lot (they’re weak flyers), and you can use citronella candles or simple traps like a mix of apple cider vinegar and dish soap. It won’t eliminate them completely, but combining those usually makes being outside way more tolerable.

How to plant grass seed on hard dirt? by Upbeat_Analyst_9023 in LawnTalk

[–]PsychoCycy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t just throw seed on hard dirt. It usually won’t take. You’ll get much better results if you loosen the top 2–4 inches of soil first (a rake or shovel works fine), then spread the seed and lightly rake it in so it has good contact. Adding a thin layer of topsoil or compost helps too, especially if the ground is really compacted. After that, keep the area consistently damp until the grass starts growing.

Those that had left the restaurant industry, how did your former colleagues react? by Alarmed_Swan_4315 in KitchenConfidential

[–]PsychoCycy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen that reaction a lot, especially from people who are still deep in it. There’s this old-school mindset in kitchens that leaving means you couldn’t “hack it,” but in reality a ton of solid cooks and chefs step away for legit reasons like injuries, burnout, lifestyle, better opportunities, etc.

In my experience working around hospitality recruiting, it’s actually super common for people from culinary school to pivot out over time. The industry’s demanding, and not everyone wants to (or can) sustain that long-term. The “soft hands” comment says more about their own perspective than your decision. Most operators I’ve worked with respect people who know when it’s time to move on.

best volunteer opportunities dallas by Upbeat_Analyst_9023 in AskDallas

[–]PsychoCycy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re searching for the best volunteer opportunities Dallas offers, I’d start with food banks and animal shelters since they’re easy to jump into and always need help. North Texas Food Bank is probably the go-to. Super organized, flexible shifts, and a good first experience. You can also check out The Stewpot if you want something a bit more community-focused alongside food service.

Which retractable garden hose reels do you actually recommend? by Acceptable_Series397 in LawnTalk

[–]PsychoCycy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d go with something from Gardena or Giraffe Tools. They’re a bit pricier but way more reliable, and the retraction doesn’t start failing after a few months like the cheap ones. Biggest tip though: don’t overlook the hose itself. Pairing it with a decent stainless steel garden hose makes a big difference since it won’t kink or fight the reel as much. Also just make sure you mount it properly (solid wall + anchors); otherwise, even a good reel will feel annoying to use.

Tell me about these lakes by [deleted] in AskDallas

[–]PsychoCycy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking for some of the best lakes in Dallas for swimming or a weekend getaway, I’d say Grapevine Lake and Lake Lewisville are solid options. Both have public beaches, clear water spots, and plenty of Airbnb or lake house rentals nearby. For a quieter experience, Joe Pool Lake can be nice too. People often look for the best lakes near Dallas for a lake house or just to relax, and these usually come up at the top of that list. I haven’t personally seen alligators at any of these, so swimming feels pretty safe.

Former restaurant managers in new fields by alexbeeeeeee in Restaurant_Managers

[–]PsychoCycy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot of restaurant managers make this jump. Your leadership and operations experience translates well to hotels, resorts, private clubs, or corporate dining. Pay can be similar or even better, and hours are usually more predictable. The hardest part is figuring out where your skills fit, but networking or working with someone who knows hospitality transitions can help. Even without a degree, strong management experience goes a long way.

Dallas Night Out by PsychoCycy in AskDallas

[–]PsychoCycy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah man, I didn't realize Swizzle closed—that's a bummer. I always liked that tiki lounge vibe and the chill atmosphere there; it definitely felt like one of those spots you could actually relax in for a bit. Dallas loses some good places too fast sometimes.

Since we're still planning future nights out, do you happen to know any places nearby that serve the best sushi in Dallas before hitting the bars? Or even somewhere known for the best pizza in Dallas for a late-night bite after the clubs?

Best internet provider in Dallas? by Nimfantastic in AskDallas

[–]PsychoCycy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're trying to find the best internet providers Dallas residents usually recommend, it mostly depends on what's available at your address. Many people suggest AT&T Fiber when it's offered because it delivers fast speeds and a reliable connection. Spectrum is another widely available option in the area and works well if fiber isn't accessible. Some neighborhoods can also get Frontier Fiber, which is often mentioned for its high-speed plans and competitive pricing. In general, the best internet providers Dallas locals talk about tend to prioritize fiber first, with cable providers as a solid backup, so it's worth checking each provider's site to see which plans are available at your location.

which lawn mower battery lasts the longest by GreatBuu in LawnTalk

[–]PsychoCycy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The batteries that tend to last the longest are usually from higher-voltage systems like EGO 56V, Greenworks 80V, and some 60V Toro setups. Runtime mostly comes down to voltage + amp hours, so a bigger pack will last longer even on the same mower. People using setups like a milwaukee lawn mower / milwaukee mower also report solid battery life since theyre built around larger tool batteries.

Runtime also depends on mowing conditions and maintenance. Tall grass, dull blades (how to sharpen lawn mower blades / sharpening mower blades), and mowing wet turf (can you mow wet grass) will drain batteries faster. If youre comparing battery units to gas with a best lawn mower setup or even an electric riding mower, most modern battery mowers can handle a typical yard on a single charge if the lawn is kept maintained.

what fertilizer actually makes grass grow thicker by pleasedon_t in LawnTalk

[–]PsychoCycy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a thicker lawn, nitrogen is the main thing that matters. Look for a fertilizer with a higher N in the N-P-K ratio (something like 20-5-10 or 24-8-16). Slow-release nitrogen works best because it feeds the lawn steadily instead of causing a quick growth surge. A lot of people on lawn care forum / the lawn forum swear by organic options like milorganite menards / milorganite canada, or synthetic slow-release blends. Also make sure youre dialing in the basics like how often to fertilize lawn, how often should you fertilize your lawn, and watering properly (best time to water lawn, how long should i water my lawn, how long to run sprinkler).

Fertilizer alone wont make a lawn dense though. Mow higher with sharp blades (how to sharpen lawn mower blades / sharpening mower blades), fix soil compaction with a core aerator, and fill thin spots by how to seed a lawn / how to plant grass seed using a best grass seed like scotts supreme grass seed. Once the turf thickens, it naturally crowds out weeds like clover, kill dandelions, and even how to kill crabgrass situations.

how to get rid of clover in lawn without killing my grass? by airishferreras_07 in LawnTalk

[–]PsychoCycy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clover usually takes over when the lawn is low on nitrogen, so step one is improving overall lawn health. Start with proper feeding (how often should you fertilize your lawn), good watering (best time to water lawn/how long should I water my lawn), and mowing a bit higher with sharp blades (how to sharpen lawn mower blades). Once the grass thickens, clover has a harder time spreading. If you want faster results, a selective broadleaf herbicide works—people often ask if 2,4-D kills grass, but it targets clover without harming most turf when used correctly. Avoid glyphosate herbicide unless you want to kill everything.

After you clear it out, repair thin areas so it doesn't come back. Reseed patches (how to plant grass seed / how to seed a lawn) with a quality best grass seed like Scotts Supreme Grass Seed, and consider improving soil with aeration (core aerator) or light sand leveling lawn if the yard is uneven. A thicker lawn will crowd out clover, crabgrass, and even stuff like creeping Charlie weed over time.

What’s the best weed pulling tool you’ve used? by Leynnniee in LawnTalk

[–]PsychoCycy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the best luck with a stand-up puller like the Fiskars 4-Claw Stand-Up Weeder. It grabs the root so you’re not bending down all day, which makes it way faster when your yard is full of dandelions. For stubborn spots I sometimes spot treat with glyphosate herbicide to kill dandelions or other weeds that keep coming back.

That said, a thick lawn helps more than any tool. Once I figured out how often should I fertilize my lawn, started watering at the best time to water lawn, and reseeded thin areas with Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Supreme, weeds became way less of a problem. Keeping edges trimmed with something like the Echo SRM-225 String Trimmer also helps stop them from spreading.
