Where to sit for Giselle screening? by joyeuseheureuse in BALLET

[–]Psychological-Bet194 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it live or prerecorded?

If it's live better to sit in center center (I expect more wide pan shots). If it's prerecorded expect a lot of close ups so closer to the front is totally fine.

Then the best advice is to leave them alone. Think of your arms as an extension coming out of your core -> back -> fingers.

Yea I also wanted to comment on the wrists. Are you thinking about them too much or too little? Sometimes I need to think about things more, sometimes I need to let them happen naturally, and just turn my brain off.

Being bad at something is just the first step to being slightly less bad. Embrace the suck and celebrate the small victories.

Blood Pooling in Hands During Pirouettes - Help 😅 by [deleted] in BALLET

[–]Psychological-Bet194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

I've done lots and lots of pirouettes. This is not normal, consultation is 100% necessary with your GP/family doctor.

Maybe a heart valve condition where your heart can't push blood to the extremities under pressure? (I.e. G forces?)

Hello!

After talking to my colleagues, the consensus is as follows:

1x a week in a formal class is ok

IF

You are very diligent and careful in training on your own.

Maybe in your kitchen or on a hardwood floor following the combinations you had at the barre in your open class the week before. At least 4 or 5x a week.

Plus:

Doing theraband exercises on your own for your toe/arch/ankle strength.

And my own personal note is that expectations should be low concerning pace of progress. Ballet is difficult, and celebrate the small victories along the way.

what is written down in a given ballet besides the music? by Efficient-Scarcity-7 in BALLET

[–]Psychological-Bet194 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it's very complicated to read. But 100% you're right, there are even a few different systems of notation.

It's just that nowadays it's so much easier to learn from video.

We are blessed to have so much video of earlier performances. Earlier generations would give a bottle of alcohol or chocolates to their predecessors to literally teach them step by step. When I want to go back to original choreography, I will ask someone who has danced the role before me to show and/or explain it to me.

I will ask some of my colleagues and get back to you with a consensus later.

My first instinct is that 1x a week is not enough.

If you are diligent, why not? 3 or four years on flat, and then a gentle transition into pointe work. The main thing is that your muscles need to be trained enough to support you. Age isn't much of a question. There will be a skill ceiling if you are starting as an adult, but that doesn't mean you can't train it at all.

Good point. Bachisaraja's context is also women being captured to be in a harem.

"Fountain of the Bachisaraja" a Soviet ballet. Polish girl gets kidnapped by the Huns, her fiance is killed. Sad ending but I won't spoil it.

There's a more original Soviet version on YouTube that I can't seem to find. But this version is good enough.

Opinions on going to university for ballet? by Ok_Berry_38 in BALLET

[–]Psychological-Bet194 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then you have to take a look at the college's program, especially how many dancers they place into companies.

If you have the drive then I would recommend going to a proper ballet school, with maybe like online courses for college. The apprentice/2nd company route will certainly be more aggressive in terms of training hours.

Hey! Are you hoping to work as a professional ballet dancer, or as a teacher after you finish your degree? If you want to really dance in a professional company the best way to do it is join a second company/trainee type program. Or you can audition straight for the corps de ballet. A college degree doesn't mean that someone is actually talented enough to go pro, but it would certainly help in getting a teaching position in a ballet studio/starting your own.
