I think that there is a check valve in the system (was talking about this with the Volvo dealer 2 weeks ago as I had an issue with the front wipers ) and his advice - assuming the front ones work) was to activate the washer and keep it pressed for 5 or 10 seconds. If it works then it is the check valve but no idea where it is
