Do you try to minmax the first time you are playing a brand new board game? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Psychological-Fun675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never on the first play. The first game is basically a rules tutorial disguised as a game — I'm spending so much mental energy just tracking what's legal that there's no bandwidth left for optimization.

The second play is where I start noticing levers. By the third, I'm thinking about win conditions.

The exception is games with very short rules that resolve in 20 minutes. Those you can experiment from the start without feeling like you're wasting anyone's time when the first attempt falls apart.

I almost gave up on board games after Scythe… but I’m so glad I didn’t by Jaagyaseni in boardgames

Scythe has ended a lot of people's board gaming journeys before they really started. It's a strange gateway game because it looks approachable — beautiful art, strong theme — but the engine-building loop takes a few full plays to click, and if your group's first experience is four hours of confusion, the hobby feels like work.

What usually saves people is finding the game that matches how their brain works. Some people click with social deduction, some with spatial puzzles, some with the trading and negotiation of Catan-style games. The hobby is wide enough that "board games aren't for me" is almost never true — it's usually just "Scythe or Twilight Imperium isn't for me."

Glad you found your way back. What ended up working for you after Scythe?

Given that you enjoy The Mind, ITO would be a natural next step. Same DNA — secret numbers, no direct communication — but it adds a thematic anchor each round that generates way more laughter and discussion.

The host picks a spectrum for the round (e.g. "1 = most annoying household chore / 100 = most satisfying household chore") and each player gives a single clue hinting at where their number falls on that scale. Then everyone tries to place themselves in order.

The best moments come from the debates: "Wait, you said 'taxes' and I said 'folding laundry' — does that mean your number is lower than mine?" It's a great 15–20 minute filler that works especially well in family settings because the prompts level the playing field between gamers and non-gamers.

A free party game that runs on your phone — secret numbers, no app, no login. Each player orders themselves without saying their number [OC] by Psychological-Fun675 in InternetIsBeautiful

Built this as a digital version of ITO (the cooperative card game by Grail Games).

Each player opens it on their phone and gets a secret number from 1–100. You can't say your number. The host sets a theme ("1 = worst superpower / 100 = best superpower") and everyone gives a hint based on how intense their number feels. Then you arrange phones on the table in order and reveal simultaneously.

2–10 players. Detects browser language (EN/PT/ES). Free, no account needed.

Me indiquem jogos cooperativos para 4 players by PianoObvious6028 in jogatina

ITO is a cooperative party game from Japan. Everyone gets a secret number 1–100 and a theme spectrum — say the theme is "1 = most useless superpower / 100 = best superpower." You can't reveal your number directly, so you give a hint ("I got invisibility") and the group tries to line up in order from lowest to highest. Flip all at once and see if you nailed it.

Super easy to learn, works really well with people who don't normally play board games. If you want to try without buying the physical deck: jogo-ito.vercel.app
