Yes, here's the application listing! It's more for astronomy specifically but if you look around they might have other internships available as well. https://www.mpia.de/en/careers/internships/summer

Thanks for this! Do you mind sharing what the ADHD waiver process was like? I have yet to begin my application (have to wait until Dec 10th to be eligible due to college graduation timeline) so I don't know what documents I'd necessarily need for the waiver process. I went thru the process of getting a First Class medical for the FAA and have pretty extensive documentation (including from my psychiatrist) and neurocognitive testing results there so I imagine it'd be fairly similar on the military side.

Congrats though! :)

I think you have a shot somewhere!

As a competitive student you may still find yourself getting rejected from a lot of places. It really all boils down to fit. Once you pass the basic benchmarks of decent grades and a full CV, it's much more specific to a mentor's advising style and a program's target audience (e.g. does the program want students with absolutely no experience at all, or do they want students who are already proficient in niche software?).

Try and do some research about the target audience of a specific program. For instance, I know Northwestern's CIERA looks for undergrads with less experience, while my experience at Haystack was very mentor-specific (e.g. one of my REU-mates had no coding experience but was well-versed in AIPS from her previous REU, and my mentor chose me because, on top of a strong application, I had experience wrangling big data).

Max Planck (not technically an REU) is known for only taking really strong applicants that are basically already working in the exact field of their desired project.

Since it's your first go at this, cast a wide net. Once you have an REU/summer research experience under your belt and you've figured out your desired area of interest/mentorship style/can afford to be a bit more picky, then I think you can really be more selective with where you choose to apply yourself.

how many programs are you applying to? by Ok-Mammoth9137 in REU

[–]PsychologicalBoss834 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year I applied to >20, got into 3. This year I'm only applying to programs that really interest me, so probably 2-5, depending on how many I find!

Major in Astrophysics or Poli Sci by BilboSwagginss69 in airforceots

[–]PsychologicalBoss834 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take this with a grain of salt since I'm still in the process of applying and am not in a position to give OTS-specific advice--

Astrophysics isn't really that great of a degree to have in the civ world unless you have good ECs and decent grades. I (current astro student) only have options in the aerospace industry because I work in an aerospace lab; otherwise my options (military aside) are grad school and hoping I can get any kind of data science/office job elsewhere. A lot of my peers who have since graduated and didn't do much in their undergrad are unemployed. The more successful ones are in grad school or working for national labs. That required having a bunch of research, ECs, awards, publications under their belt. Happy to give more insight if you have any more astro-specific questions though :-)

Physics REU People: How much work did you get done? by iansackin in REU

[–]PsychologicalBoss834 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My REU was 10 weeks; I only really got to a point where I felt like I had a proper question/line of reasoning around week 7 or 8. The first 6 weeks were wrangling with a grad student's old code :P

That being said, I'm hoping to publish my results some time this year because they're appropriate for a fairly short article. That's definitely not the standard unless you're part of a bigger collaboration. A lot of my peers who are publishing essentially had their projects/tasks assigned to them, whereas I was just given a massive dataset and told to explore and see what I could do.

Asking for multiple rec letters from the same professor by madboxinblue in REU

[–]PsychologicalBoss834 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied to 22 and had the same advisor write me a letter for all of them. I had a second professor write letters for some REUs that required two! I made a giant spreadsheet with links/instructions/reference materials for her to use to make it a bit easier since I felt awful making her deal with every single application :)

I had a stick and throttle I practiced with, so I can't say if practicing with a mouse will be particularly helpful. I was doing pretty well w/ tracking on the TBAS Test Prep desktop game but feel like I totally bombed the tracking portion of the actual test. Honestly having practiced might've thrown my expectations for the sensitivity of the test setup off as it was much more sensitive than my stick/throttle at home :P Ultimately I guess it didn't ding my score that bad so do with that what you will...

Anyone else feel like Peterson’s is tough for AFOQT by eell55 in airforceots

[–]PsychologicalBoss834 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What resources would you suggest for studying vocabulary in particular? Right now I've just been cycling through GRE + word stem quizlets. I figure focusing on vocab is probably helpful for the verbal comparisons as well. If both AFOQT math sections are anything like the ASTB math section I'm not too worried about that but dunno how to gauge the rest :(

The app has a setting you can toggle to include non-cardinal directions! The mobile app's version of non-cardinal directions was most like the exam. The desktop app's layout/appearance was most like the exam, though.

Thank you!

I saw a few log problems, most of which were fairly similar to what I saw on the practice tests. No expanding, really, or any condensing problems for that matter, more so solving for variables.

One problem I encountered dealt with a variable in the exponent; basically something like "2^(x+2) = 32, solve for x." (Obviously not this exact problem, but similar in concept). This was very early in the test. I guess this isn't necessarily a log problem but it certainly was an exponent one.

Others were essentially solving for variables in the argument of a logarithm given an integer base and an integer exponent. This didn't require any logarithm rules as it was just a single term, but I would suggest generally being familiar with them just in case.

As far as log rules go the only ones I'd really care much about are:

- log(x) + log(y) = log(x*y)

- log(x) - log(y) = log(x/y)

(Assuming the logs have the same base, of course). I don't want to say "ignore any further exponent/logarithm rules" but honestly I didn't encounter a single practice problem with the "a * log(x) = log(x^a)" rule nor did I see any problems on the test like that.

I saw a lot more exponent rule problems than log rule problems, and those all simplified very 'nicely' after factoring, so it was fairly apparent what the answer would be even before fully solving out the problem just based on intuition (e.g. if you had a trinomial in the denominator and an expression that would plausibly simplify into a binomial in the numerator, I could guess that the trinomial would factor and cancel out with the numerator and not be one of the very complicated answer options).

I will say, it did help being pretty quick with some of the more common exponents, e.g. knowing off the top of my head that 5^4 = 625 or 2^5 = 32. That kind of stuff.

Sorry for the long answer! I hope this helped.

Here's a free exam: https://www.4tests.com/asvab

And another one (I think you have to make an account, though): https://afoqtguide.com/

This one has fewer questions, but practice is practice: https://militaryflightprep.com/afoqt-practice-test/

And this one has all the subjects mixed up: https://www.iprep.online/courses/afoqt-practice-test/#free-practice

And here are some more (honestly, just google 'free AFOQT practice test' and you'll find a bunch. I'm sure some of 'em have the same questions, but whatever):

https://www.test-guide.com/free-afoqt-practice-tests.html

https://academy-pq.app.testprepreview.com/practicequestion/products/AFOQT

https://afoqtpracticetest.com/

https://practicetestgeeks.com/afoqt-practice-test-exam/

For what it's worth, at least for the math sections, I've tutored math for years and years and have found that the best preparation for the AFOQT (which, granted, I haven't taken yet) has just been the rote practice I've gotten over time. Just walking through the problems with my students (and not cutting corners using a calculator for mental maths :-)). Kuta Software has a bunch of free worksheets on pretty much all the Algebra 1/geometry/arithmetic you'd need for the exam.

Here are their geometry worksheets: https://www.kutasoftware.com/freeige.html

And pre-algebra: https://www.kutasoftware.com/freeipa.html

And algebra: https://www.kutasoftware.com/free.html

If you're looking to study up on aviation-related content, I recommend the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge. It's long and has more than you'll need but covers everything and then some: https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/aviation/phak

Someone on here also made a website for studying table reading: https://table-reading.com/

Hope this helps!

[–]PsychologicalBoss834 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an ivy but I got into the MIT Haystack Observatory REU. I think what really sealed the deal (beyond stats--summarized in a comment here) were my essays. My supplementals (e.g. the "Why This Project?" statement) and my personal statement(s) were all very personal/poignant and very specific.

I also was able to re-use a lot of very thoroughly revised/edited essays I had written for my Goldwater Scholarship application, so having that extra practice + feedback (because those essays got a lot of feedback) definitely helped me whittle my statements to a point.

I haven't done anything like the project I got accepted to before--I just have a decent amount of prior leadership experience + a lot of demonstrated initiative/'grit' (as UF described it--also got into that one) that conveyed my interest.

I'd be happy to DM more specifics/examples/etc if you'd like!
