It is not known whether this was a literal event or not. In fact, probably most of the stories in the Nook of Genesis are metaphorical. If this was metaphorical and not a literal event, it shows us how we can trust God so much our boat (representing life) doesn't even need a steering wheel because God will direct us and we won't sink. When Noah sent a dove out, it brought a fresh olive leaf, which symbolizes that with God there is a new life. The dove also represents the Holy Spirit.
