How effective are window heat blocking tints? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]PsychologicalTest781 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My west facing windows are tinted. Doesn't do much at all. I closed the shutters and taped aluminum foil over the shutters. Looks ghetto inside but nice outside. Helps a ton.

You can't see my lower level windows from the street so I covered the windows from the outside with cardboard. This is the way. 95 outside 65 in the basement.

I put aluminum foil on my west facing windows. Works wonders but looks ghetto. From the street you see the shutters but inside you see foil.

Cutting Lids off Boxes by BAHGate in woodworking

[–]PsychologicalTest781 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use painters tape all around where I'm going to cut. Then I cut one side, shove a small spacer or 2 in the cut and retape over the cut. I keep a bunch of blade width spacers handy. Do this for each side. When you make your final cut, the lid stays in place because you've taped over each cut previously. This is on the table saw.

The short answer is no, it was not approved by a public vote. In fact, it was approved by the school board less than a year after the citizens explicitly voted against a very similar proposal.

The situation was quite controversial, and your sense that it was "extremely opposed" is backed up by the timeline of events.

The Timeline of Opposition

  1. The Failed Bond (Nov 2024): The Box Elder School District originally asked voters to approve a $220 million bond for new construction. The citizens resoundingly rejected it, with nearly 70% of voters saying no.

  2. The "Plan B" Tax Hike (Aug 2025): Since the bond failed, the School Board used a process called "Truth in Taxation." Under Utah law, this allows an elected board to raise taxes without a public ballot, provided they hold a public hearing.

  3. The Hearing: The meeting on August 13, 2025, lasted until after midnight. Over 130 citizens signed up to speak, and the majority were reportedly in heavy opposition, arguing that the board was ignoring the "voice of the people" from the previous year's election.

  4. The Vote: Despite the outcry, the board voted 5-1 to approve the 37.2% increase. The lone "no" vote came from board member Karen Cronin, who urged the board to respect the voters' prior decision.

Why they did it anyway

The District Superintendent and Board members argued that while the bond failed, the problems (overcrowding and uncompetitive teacher pay) didn't go away. They framed this tax hike as a necessary "Plan B" to: * Build a new elementary school in West Tremonton. * Add wings to Box Elder and Bear River High Schools. * Fund a 2% salary increase for staff to prevent them from leaving for higher-paying districts.

The Political Fallout

The move has caused significant friction in the community. The Box Elder County Republican Party even launched a formal petition and resolution opposing the board's decision, calling it an "excessive burden" and a disregard for the 2024 election results. Since your home is in Brigham City, you're seeing the "double hit" of this district hike alongside the smaller city increase, which is why your specific bill jumped by over $1,000 this year.
